Not high on Carlsson and he may be a glass body. #2 means nothing. He shouldn't have gone there. Fantilli should have and he is worth what you are offering.

I'd really want us to try and get Jared McCann from Seattle in the summer. He might not be a pure center, but still a very good two-way player with fantastic analytics who is signed for 5M for two more years after this one. Not sure what Seattle would want in return since nobody seems to know are they rebuilding or not, but in terms of value I'd see something like Matheson + Mailloux + 3rd round pick to be good enough.

McCann would be a good option and leave us room to took at adding Ehlers. We need more speed and skill.

In that both played for idiot coaches yes. Bednuts does not use young players. Keefe is useless. He would be a worthwhile acquisition if he was cheap and if he was a centre. He may not be a centre.

I kind of have a feeling he's going to be one of the targets. He fits what they've tried to acquire up to now and I could see him being what they consider a fit with MSL

I really hope the push by the team this year emphasizes how we need established and productive players rather than banking on more projects. As much as I dog on Newhook, I was a massive fan during his draft year (wanted him over Caufield) and loved him last year. I also wanted both Reichel and Mercer over Guhle and thought Mercer was poised to break out after his 2nd NHL season. We cannot afford to have players in key positions not playing up to par for most of the season.

I think Hughes knows it too given his comments about how he acknowledges that he needs to take advantage of Suzuki's prime, I'm expecting a big summer from him. If all he does is get Mercer to be the 2C and banks on guys like Beck/Kapanen to fill out the bottom 6 holes, it's a disastrous offseason that I can't see Suzuki being happy about.

More and more I am a fan of bringing in Ehlers as some of you pointed out.

Would provide an element of speed and puck carrying/playmaking that we sorely miss.

Would make top 9 wing a position of strength and provide us with assets for an important trade.

And he seems like a good, quiet dude who would fit in with the squad.

Make no sense value wize.

Slaf is a 1st overall and Carlsson a 2nd overall. Slaf had a better d+2 season than Carlsson is having this year. I like Carlsson but he's no McDavid or Crosby or Malkin. If he doesn't pan out as a 1st line center then he loses lot of value. Slaf as a big 60 points winger is a lot more valuable than a 2nd line center. Carlsson could take a long while to develop at the center position like Byfield and Vilardi.

Luneau is a 2nd round pick who has not proven anything yet. He got outstanding AHL stats but he would not be the first 21+ propect with outstanding AHL stat to not pan out. He plays for a pretty bad team so i assume he got a truck load of TOI without any pressure to win where he can play for himself. Guhle is a just turned 23 years old 1 st round pick who is already a very good top 4 in the NHL with still some potential to grow. He's also signed to a decent contract for a few more years.

Here's the thing, we wanted the Habs to get one or two more players as added weapons to make the playoffs or go further in the playoffs. But if we did that then we would not have been able to see what someone like Roy could do. At some point, we need to see our guys develop and the only way they will is by letting them play.

Roy is a possibility instead of Newhook on that 4th line as I can see one of the two included in a trade this off-season.

No doubt Hughes will try to make a big move in the summer, but I wouldn't be surprised if not much happens. We have been a top-10 team since early December, if that's the team we "really" are, then even without filling those holes we are likely borderline contender when we add Demidov.

And that’s how we keep the merry-go-round by acquiring failed project after failed project to attempt to plug important holes.

I would take a Bennett or a Kadri over anyone. Just the perfect kind of players for what this team is trying to do. They could also agitate to their hearts content as they'd have Struble, Xhekaj and Anderson behind them. The issue for Bennett is he'll have the pick of the litter and Kadri is getting old, even if he's still very good.

Someone like Mercer is probably the kind of realistic option they'll manage to acquire.

Honestly if those are the options I think I'd rather just roll the dice on Dach/Newhook or Demidov making the switch to C then paying the price to acquire those guys and still be in a situation where we are gambling on a project figuring things out.

For the right player Hage should be available. Mailloux has value. He obviously has warts but GMs will love a puckmoving 6’4 RD. I mean a team in the playoff hunt just got Tony DeAngelo to leave the KHL to join them.

What you listed are two very different things.
-Dach/Newhoo/Mercer are guys you are banking on untapped potential but don't have a good history of being top 6 C
-Vet on a bad contract like Monahan/Laine has worked out for us and PLD would be an absolute godsend for us at the moment

There is no perfect solution without giving up a Demidov/Reinbacher as you said, but we can still get a significant and worthy upgrade by being creative. Hughes mentioned he was looking at players who weren't even available, it's something that can be more feasible in the offseason. It reminds me of Vegas getting Hertl with retention without giving up anything crazy. Hertl's contract may look poor by the end, but at the moment he's been an excellent player for them.
