HF Habs: Trade Proposal Thread 92 Waiting on the DRAFT Edition

I only have Reinbacher on the 3rd pairing starting off the year. The hope would be for him to move up the lineup as he gets more adapted to NHL play and slowly bring him along. Ultimately, I's hope he becomes the top pairing RHD in the future but would not want him to start there and burn out. Shelter him until carrier's contract comes up, then move him to 2nd pairing and so on.
Then I think he needs to start there, otherwise we'd have issues signing UFAs to high contract if they knew their minutes will go down based on principal.

Or we keep Hutson playing on the right and Reinbacher #4 with Carrier #5... Meaning we need a LHD if Xhekaj and Struble can't play #3 or #4.

Guhle - Hutson
XXXX - Reinbacher
Struble/Xhekaj - Carrier

Is what I'm thinking about atm.. Easier to find a LHD also.

I don’t think Reinbacher will be ready to be a true number 1 for several years. In that time a no. 1 would fill the role and eventually would split more time with Reinbacher years down the road when they begin to slow down and Reinbacher catches up. That to me would be ideal and give you two high end RHD in your top 4 and really deep defensive corps

As long as the money and term are good, I don’t see a problem with that and Habs would be competitive on day 1 and. It have to hope Reinbacher fills the role for them.

No but Hutson can definitely handle the minutes if he's used the same way he is right now. So we kinda have a path off of Matheson, involving getting a LHD. That even gives Mailloux extra reps in the AHL.

I don't think Matheson serves no purpose (ideally you find a RD upgrade), but Hutson isn't that sheltered. The bigger issue is that Matheson, Carrier and Guhle play incredibly difficult minutes for Montreal, and that its not exactly easy to replace those minutes. Guhle-Carrier was effective in those minutes, but Montreal needs another clear top-4 D if they want to take the next step. I wouldn't be prepared to bet one of Struble, Xhekaj, Reinbacher, Mailloux, etc. can do that next season.

I agree.

But KH will have the time, cap, and the assets to try and acquire a top-4 defenseman this year to help us long-term.

That hypothetical top-4 guy, plus further development from Hutson, and health for Guhle and Reinbacher could go a long way to cementing the depth and quality of our team D in the years to come.

Next year we'd have a blend of Matheson, new top-4, Hutson, Guhle, Carrier rotating-in as parts in the pretty-solidified top-5.

We'd then have either Struble or Xhekaj with Carrier on the bottom-pairing, with Engstrom waiting in the wings and perfecting his craft still.

And I'd give Reinbacher some more reps with Laval unless he shows in camp that he's ready, and the best between him, Struble, and Xhekaj.

If Montreal is looking for true top-4 guy, then Matheson is likely part of the return to acquire such player. Simply because you probably can't construct a deal for a player like that without sending an NHLer the other way.

You can if the other team is rebuilding and wants younger pieces/picks. That, or a certain defenseman doesn't fit in an hypothetical team's plan going forward in some way. Those things happen.

Aside from those eventualities though, I generally agree with what you've said.

There aren't really any teams that are in a tear it down mindset right now.

Toffoli signed here after Suzuki's first playoff performance because he wanted to play next to him. Hopefully Duchene does the same.
I will say this again, the Canadiens should go hard after Crosby. Three firsts and ask for permission to speak with him. Add him and this team will win a cup in the next couple of years. We could keep the first line as is and put Demidov with Crosby on line 1A/B with Laine. The D is already pretty set... we could win a cup as soon as next year.

I'm so on the fence with if I give a shit that a D playing the right side has to shoot right. I like what you are saying, Hutson is looking very comfortable pretty much anywhere you play him.

Crosby has said many times he wants to retire as a Pen

Three first for Crosby makes no sense for Crosby at this stage his career Three years old.
