Jeff Carter might be the only one that actually fetched such a big return but Voracek was seen as a bust not likely to reach his potential at that point.
Teams don't move elite U21 players. Most of the time it's comparable salary plus misc futures or a decent roster player ++ for a better guy.

Every GM entering a rebuild would not trade a Robert Thomas, just like why we wouldn't trade Suzuki without a premium asset coming back.
Eichel was opting for a surgery that had never happened in hockey, and teams were scared of how his play would be affected. Obviously that was going to hinder his value, it's a disingenuous argument to pretend otherwise.
Not sure why you're saying Voracek was a bust. You could even argue that Thomas showed more than Carter, who returned two 10 picks, which isn't as far away from a Demidov as you claim.
And teams definitely don't trade healthy, young, all situational #1Cs who don't have issues and are easily the best players on the team. It's why you don't see it happen.

I didn't even make an offer. My point is Thomas will get futures or a combination of a mid-tier roster player and futures. That's how every big trade of the entirety of the cap era has gone.

Well they're the same age and we're in year 4 of our rebuild while St. Louis is only starting their's this summer? Do you think in four years 30 year old Thomas is going to be leading the team out of the rebuild? Or can they even bottom out to get elite pieces with him there?
Thomas will be 26 at the start of their rebuild. Nick was still on his ELC when we started ours.
Maybe they'll just re-tool and decide to be a mid-tier team but if they're actually rebuilding Thomas would be their most valuable asset. It's not like they have any elite upcoming prospects or players that are pushing them beyond wildcard 2 and their D is old as dirt. Snuggerud and Dvorsky likely just replace what they're losing internally to age.
They're built exactly like the 2010 St. Louis team that had a lot of good not great players and good not great prospects. Almost none of those players made it to the 2019 cup winning roster.

Unless they trade for a young top 6 center this summer, which would be very expensive, the Habs will have to try to sign Tavares or Giroux or Duchesne for 2-3 years while waiting for a prospect (center) to develop. It will be important to select several center players during the next 2 drafts because currently, other than Hage, we do not have another top 6 center.

Well I mean he's on a stacked team and they've actually added pieces and have good goaltending. He's hoping for a good playoff, maybe a cup (lol), and then cashing in extra off of that. He's committed to going for it with Toronto one more time. If they somehow win the cup, he's now 'one of the gods' haha. If they don't he can walk away and try somewhere else. Sucks for the leafs, but he's allowed to worry about his own interests. It's not like he's checked out on the ice.
