I said I wanted Rantanen and got told he was 100% staying in Colorado.

Well, welll...

I think this trade suggests that we have a chance at signing him

I assumed Taylor Hall had a few seasons left on contract when I saw the return that Chicago got. But hes actually a UFA this offseason!!! LOL what a bad trade for them.

I understand from both perspectives.

Aho is great, but he can't lead them alone. Rantanen moves to center for them permanently. Staal becomes 3rd line center. KK 4th.

Carolina is a middling good team. They have solid regular seasons then lose in 2nd round. Repeat year after year. They're trying to break that cycle.

Colorado is going with Mackinnon & Makar as it superstar leaders. Necas will play 2nd line center. Colton 3rd. Drury steps in as a 4th liner. Not sure what they do with Mittlestadt.

It opens up cap space for them, too as they do need to add depth to their forward units. They're top heavy - at least they were.

Getting rid of Hall doesn't hurt Chicago at all. Hall is awful, man.

Basically, Chicago was willing to take on 50% of Rantanen's cap hit to get rid of him.

I was in favor of Necas when the reports were saying he wanted out in the off-season. Unfortunately, Habs don't have a Rantanen to match that kind of offer.

Nah sounds like the almost trade was Petey to Canes before they bagged Rantanen. Weekes is probably hinting a Karlsson or Latang trade is my guess.
