I would hold off from that. Newhook will be a good center insurance piece to have around while Beck and Kapanen are maturing in the winger/center role. Newhook's 2 years left is actually ideal. We have to be very careful with how we transition from guys like Newhook, Armia, Anderson to Beck, Kapanen, Roy, Hage. It will most likely be a process that we have to monitor.

Of course we can trade him in a package if we are after a big fish but lets not jump on Newhook as our next target. He's underperforming to his potential yes but it's at $2.9M AAV. Give him a little break and time to figure it out more. He's been moved around on our roster a fair amount.
I agree that we shouldn't be icing too many rookies at once in bottom six, but not sure I agree we need to hold on to newhook. As is we have:

Heineman - Evans - armia
Gallagher - Dvorak - Anderson

Armia, Dvorak and Evans are pending UFAs....

Next year once Demidov arrives, newhook will drop down. Id like to graduate Beck at the very least:

Heineman - X - Newhook
Gallagher - Beck - Anderson

So that leaves room for one more guy. Maybe a free agent signing possibly or another rook that impresses at camp....but I think id much rather hold on to one of Evans or armia over Newhook. I think my preference might be armia because Beck will eventually replace Evans.

So my ideal bottom 6 next year would be to trade Newhook and ice this instead:

Heineman - Beck - Armia
Gallagher - X - Anderson

That still gives us 3 vets at the very least

In 2 season I see our defense looking like this:

Hutson-Reinbacher
Guhle-Carrier
Xhekaj-Mailloux

We have some defensemen with value that we can trade. Matheson with retention could bring back a good prospect or a 1st round pick and Struble a similar profile as Romanov so I think he has a good value on the market. Next season I wonder what Hughes will trade them for. Our Top 6 Is getting crowded with Suzuki-Caufield-Slaf-Demidov-Laine. Dach is still a question mark on center for our second line, if a second line center hit the block it could be interesting. Maybe a good RD if Reinbacher or Mailloux are not ready ready.

If we fall and are not in the mix at the trade deadline I would put Matheson 50% retention on the block to see what we can get. Since we are thin on RD I would prefer to sign Savard another season.

While we do have a lot of valuable prospects/picks, everything has an expiry date and the time to consolidate is near. This off-season, next deadline or the off-season after at the latest.

Don’t want to be like Nashville/Buffalo with too many youngsters that are blocked who then lose their value and you lose them for peanuts.

I expect/hope for a big trade before summer 2026.

But takes 2 to tango, hopefully soon we find someone who is willing to sell a big fish. And then if we have to overpay, as long we’re not touching the core pieces, we should meet the price tag.

Gotta find a big time seller, who will be happy with a mostly futures package and hope we don’t get outbid. All it takes is one other team in the league to outbid us and stupidly offer one of their core pieces. If desperate teams likes Buffalo/NYR/Vancouver are our competitors for specific players and they’re willing to put Power/Byram/Cozens/Pettersson/Lafreniere/Perreault on the table then I don’t think we can do much then. There’s a couple of GMs on the hot seat. The team we’re playing tonight Utah, pretty sure I red on their board at some point that the new owner told the front office, playoffs in the next 2 years (or 3? Can’t remember) or you guys are gone.

And then you have other teams that can offer the similar/more futures then us as well. Quick look at NJ, Nemec/Silayev/Mercer/Casey/Gritsyuk and a boatload of 2nds, and they’re probably willing to trade future 1st since their window is open now.

The buyers market might become competitive if good names becomes available. Interesting time period for the club coming, let’s see what HuGo can do.

Sorry people but EP40 is not the awnser for our center problems.

Dude looks like another Drouin internally. Bro is getting cooked in Vancouver and the last thing we need is another headcase like him. He's skilled but I wouldn't play him above Suzuki and this guy commands 11m a year.

Id rather target Barzal , Sam Bennet , Necas (If still available) , Nick Schmaltz, Troy Terry .

Those are centers that could play with potentially Demidov and Laine next season.

That's if we need immediate help for centers. I think habs are the point to overpay for a player. Add extra 1st or a Reinbacher.

With probably Beck Suzuki and Evans adding another center would solidify our offense .
Barzal is eerily similar Drouin. World class skating with phenomenal hands but a perimeter player with poor shooting. Bennett's got 28 points in 42 games (2 points in his last 15) primarily playing with Verhaege and Tkachuk and will ask for over 7 million/year. Necas is charming soft, not great defensively, cooling off big time after his unsustainable start, not really a center, and is due for a crazy extension that won't be too far off of EP's contract. Schmaltz and Terry aren't centers and probably won't leave their respective teams.

If his injury isn't deemed anything concerning, EP would be a godsend to this team should the Canucks choose to trade him for whatever reason.

PIERRE LEBRUN: Yeah, the Flames have no interest in trading him, point blank, and they’re a little confused as to why they’re getting calls from other teams checking in on his availability.

What GM Craig Conroy has told other teams is “We’re not interested in trading Rasmus Andersson.”

He’s not a player on an expiring deal, the Flames are in a playoff race, and in fact, the Flames hope to extend Rasmus Andersson potentially this summer when he’s allowed to extend one year out.

Even when we acquired him I never did see the long term vision. I suppose they thought they could mold him into a replacement for Lehkonen on the third line but guys like Heineman or Beck are going to fill a role like that far better. Newhook is the kind of guy you throw out on PP2 for basement teams.
Newhook had great college and amateur career. No doubt played a role in the trade. Just didn't translate well to NHL
