HF Habs: Trade Proposal Thread #89: 2024-2025 season part II

This is false.

I can't "prove" how I know this, so the mods can delete if need be, but his issues with the Maple Leafs were entirely in the dressing room and not connected to the media coverage.

He may very well have not liked the media situation as well, but the reason he wasn't interested in re-signing in Toronto was because it wasn't a situation he believed in or wanted to be a part of moving forward.

He was actually thrilled to be traded to Toronto, initially, but he didn't enjoy his experience at all, and it wasn't because of the spotlight the team was under.
Not what this leads me to believe anyway..

IF and I mean IF they traded for EP
the top 2 lines are not tough enough
KH needs even if they don't get EP getting some tougher players to play against
I respect EP as a player, but its better for the habs to keep growing the talent they've acquired via the draft, and wait for less expensive trade options. Petterson in Montreal does not feel like a good mix

I love Dobson's potential but when he is age 25+. Right now, Matheson gets you the same value for someone like Dobson. Go look at their hits, blocks, giveaways, takeawwys, points, Corsi for and zone starts.

I like ROR's game but he's aging and I doubt this Ontario boy will bring his heart with him to play for the Habs. He said no to staying with the Leafs and I bet you he does not want to be in a hot market.
I pay a little bit of attention to the goings-ons of the Leafs because I have a lot of Leaf fan friends (say that 5 times fast).

If I can recall, the rumour is that O'Reilly didn't like how Keefe coached/the regime and culture at the time and not the market itself. If I had to pit our culture against their past one, I'd take ours.

Now, would O'Reilly want to go to a bubble team and not a contender (especially a Canadian bubble team), that's another conversation. But I don't think he's averse to big markets.

Less expensive trade options means less impactful player or someone with a anchor contract taking them to 36/37 (like Miller). Or we wait for the next 26 year old locked up with term to become available?

Our approach with Pettersson should be to keep the phone lines open with the Canucks and stay in the back seat. Let other teams engage in their offers and tell the Canucks we prefer to have the last min option to beat the offer. Tell them that we may not or may be able to beat it but we prefer to allow other teams to make their offers first.

No it doesn't

David Pagnotta: "They want to see where that goes. I think even if this team remains in the playoff race, I think he's (Savard) going to be somebody who will remain in play ahead of the trade deadline, so we could see him (Savard) shifting out. The Canadians have one retention slot still available to them where they can eat money on a deal," Pagnotta said. "So it could be on Savard three and a quarter mil. It could be on Dvorak's $4.45 million cap hit. We'll see where they go. But the Canadians have options."

Pagnotta is really just copy-pasting Dreger these days. "It might or not happen".

He’s my ideal target. Perfect centre for a rookie Demidov next year. Good centre for Laine as well. PK would improve even more. No longer need to throw Dvorak out there for important faceoffs. Veteran leader for a young team.
I thought O'Reilly hated playing for the leafs as he didn't like all the attention away from the rink. If that is the case wouldn't it be worse in Montreal, if not worse at least the same. Not sure he would be happy playing here. Could be wrong but I am sure I read that somewhere

Agreed
I don't think he would

Would definitely not be worse in Montreal.

1. He doesn't speak french
2. He is not a star anymore
3. He would play a lesser role

He came to Toronto as a local savior. He would come in Montreal as a vet 2nd line there to help the kid. The focus of the fans would be Hutson, Demidov, Slaf, local players, Suzuki, Caufield, ....

habs need a better centre

I heard he didn't sign with Leafs because of a preventative measure as there were just too many Tim Hortons in Toronto for him to crash into.

I'll go with this gullible trade...

Avs know they can't extend Rantanen and Crosby wants to play with MacKinnon. Avs can't fit both Rantanen and Crosby so they will trade Rantanen to the Habs and the Avs get Crosby. Pens get youth and futures.

What's worth more?

* Rantanen for the rest of this season at $9.25M (age 28 rental)
or
* Crosby for the rest of this season and two more (age 37-39)
Have to give up a ton that way. I would offer Rantanen blank cheque this summer though

Barzal or Dobson? Who would you rather see traded?

Interesting thread that popped up on the Islanders board couple days ago. Isles fans review of Dobson and especially Barzal ain’t too pretty...

Dobson struggles defensively in his own zone & is soft.

Barzal is a perimeter player & is soft. He's basically a better version of Drouin. Like a lot of players, Barzal had a peak year last season, but he's back to being a 60 pt guy. He'd throw our cap out of whack since he's making over $9m.

A Barzal - Pettersson trade might be fun, though.
I can't get past this trade opportunity/idea. It seems like the perfect time to consolidate some assets.
I mean obviously the islanders are a dumpster fire and these guys certainly aren't helping but a change of scenery could be all they need. Also, If barzal and dobson weren't having struggles they would never be moved in the first place.

Basis of trade idea:

To Canadiens:
Matt Barzal
Noah Dobson

To Islanders:
David Reinbacher and/or Logan Mailloux
Kirby Dach and/or Alex Newhook
1st round pick
Brendan Gallagher or Josh Anderson(cap dump)
Joshua Roy

Reinbacher would obviously be the most interesting piece to the Islanders IMO. And maybe barzal wouldnt even waive his ntc for montreal.
For montreal, Barzal is a dynamic offensive player and would be a huge upgrade to the top 6(i think your underselling him, comparing him to drouin). Islanders have been always talking about finding the right fit for barzal and the canadiens have a number of offensive weapons which could finally unlock him. Dobson for all his issues could potentially be everything the canadiens need and want in an RHD or he could be vlad malakhov 2.0.

That package may get you one of Barzal or Dobson (depending on what Gallagher or Anderson are worth), but its definitely not getting both.

Aaron Protzline on Futa show today said Jackets are trying to sign Olivier. Said he's toughest guy in league and only one with 10 goals. Boston trying to get him he said.

Crazy moves but imagine if Hughes pulls this off...

EP40
for Slaf, Dach, Gallagher (50% retention), Mailloux

R Andersson
for Habs 1st (10-16 range), Flames/Panthers 1st, Newhook
Anderson comes with extension

Ehlers
signed as UFA (7x $8M)

Ehlers / Suzuki / Caufield
Laine / Pettersson / Demidov
Heineman / Evans / Kapanen
Roy / Beck / Anderson

RHP

Hutson / Matheson
Guhle / R Andersson
Xhekaj / Carrier

Struble, Engstrom,

* Reinbacher either replaces Matheson or Carrier in the next two seasons. Gives us time to develop him properly in the AHL with some NHL games mixed in (probably going to be injuries)

* Hage replaces Evans at center after 3 more years.

* Yes, this all fits our cap structure.
I doubt Pettersson right fit mentally in Montreal.
