HF Habs: Trade Proposal Thread #89: 2024-2025 season part II

If the $97m cap for next year is true (reported by Allan Walsh) then Toronto is going to have no problems signing all of Marner, Tavares & Knies. Colorado should be able to sign Rantanen, too.

That's a huge jump and that can't happen without the approval of NHLPA, which means Walsh has inside information that they have decided to approve it.

It's definitely going to kill the summer's UFA season as no team will be in cap trouble, which means they can sign who they want. Players who do go UFA will have a lot of options.

It also means we can probably afford to go to $4m for Evans.

Not only "afford" it, but will be fortunate if we can get him at that number.

Finding an equivalent, or better, middle 6 C option at less than that will be virtually impossible in that environment. We're not the bonafide contender that will attract the 1-year "sign cheap for a chance to win", so attracting a straight UFA upgrade will require matching or beating the inflated summer market...

Yup I'd even tack on a few extra years to give him the security. Buying out a 4mil contract 4-5 years from now if he's shit will be negligible. Andy and Gally will only be slightly overpaid by the time they're gone.

Even if we're in a playoff spot at the trade deadline or very close, I'm still not a fan of buying unless there's an upgrade available that's under contract for a few years and also fits our timeline. Can't waste assets on rentals, we're not there yet.

And even then, you always pay extra at the TDL -- a summer trade would be better to fill the 2C and RD holes. Ideally we would have been sellers (Armia, Dvorak, Savard, Evans if he wants too much) but it probably won't happen either if the team is in a playoff spot.

Status quo is the most likely outcome imo.

Hughes said the current team success doesn't change their plan. They want a team that's going to be competitive for years, not just this year.

Rentals would contradict this. If we have trades, it's either buying for the mid/long term or selling.

You shouldn’t worry about buying rentals at the deadline. That won’t happen. Unless we continue this streak until the deadline and they feel they can win the cup, which we all know isn’t happening.

What I see happening though is buying a UFA that will be extended on the spot or a player with term that would fill a need long term. The kind of acquisition they would normally make during the summer.

RFA sign and trade at the deadline are not uncommon, but require special circumstances (player want out, team is cap strapped and can't resign, etc). UFA signing right after being traded at the TDL is very uncommon, they usually want to see what the market will offer first.

But I personally don't think the Habs will find anyone to replace Savard (defensive minded RHD) and Dvorak (leftie center who can win faceoff and PK*) at the deadline. And the Habs might already be counting on Konyushkov to replace Savard next season so they might only be looking for the leftie center.

*Newhook is shit at faceoffs and piss poor defensively.

I agree those are uncommon but Habs situation is uncommon too. We agree the chances that happen is less than 5% but it's more than the 0% we simply buy a rental.

You need something with actual value to go with him
He is an asset if he gives 100% on every shift. If teams aren't willing to offer what that is worth then keep him and hope he figures that out.

HuGo might go after a rental or 2 but they won't give up any valuable assets for them. 4th round to 7th round pick value probably.

Even as the team has been so much better, Newhook has been awful. Just awful.
Dach has turned a bit of a corner, and Laine is Laine.........but Newhook needs to move down and let Emil come up to the top 6!!

I was a fan of Newhook and have given him a lot of rope this year, but the guy just doesn't have it. I am ready to move on. Demidov is going to replace him next year anyways.

Tell Molson to construct additional pylons first

Guess we are buyer by now .. who's team should be sellers at this point

As the team is starting to come together, all the tradeable assets are becoming clearer:

Excess 1st, 2nd, 3rd round picks for next year.
Newhook
Roy
Mesar
Kapanen
Mailloux
Engstrom
Dach (if an upgrade at C is available)
Struble (I'd like to keep if possible, but I think he has good value)
Matheson (if there is an upgrade available)

I've been looking at "big trades" made over the past 10 years, and this list is very representative of the type of assets that get moved in those trades.

I think it's a matter of time before the Habs pull off a major trade.

Not sure it's a good idea to have "awful Newhook" on a defensive line (Evans, Armia and Heineman have the lowest ozone starts on the team at 5v5 among forwards).

He's trade bait or next year 4th line center.
