The cap sets the salary scale. If the cap doubles, salaries double.
No it doesn't. Again, the minimum salary increases by some 50k/yr. It all has to do with bad GM evaluations and desperation. GMs make mistakes and the salary cap is there to make them pay. That's why Anderson and Gallagher are still on the team. Hughes took a gamble on Slaf, he was the number 1 overall pick afterall.

Anything lower than a 2nd rounder, especially with the leadership on the ice of Guhle out for the remainder of the season, I keep Savard and let him go for nothing at the end of the season.

We already have 3 third rounders and 2 fourth rounders in 2025. How many more darts, that are likely to miss the board entirely, do you need?

At some point, it just becomes hate towards a player that isn't based in fact or logic...
You can attempt to package them all for a B/C type prospect and try to relaunch their career. I know they have Dach and Newhook, but it's worth the try.

Josh Anderson is going to have a huge value on the market.

You know, a team that wants to go far in the playoffs... We saw the Panthers how they won, we saw Vegas how they won, it takes a lot out of you!

I've rarely seen Josh Anderson skate as well as that, since he arrived with the Canadiens.

At 4 against 5, on the penalty kill, he's still very good, he goes to the net, he doesn't have the great touch of a scorer but he's capable of scoring goals, and then he's capable of punishing the opponent.

He's still signed for 2 years at $5.5 million, maybe the Canadiens should swallow a million or two, but that would add to Josh Anderson's value."

- Bob Hartley
On the third line, he's pretty effective. That's where a player of this type should be slanted anyways. He was never going to be a top 6 forward. A BargainBin special guarantee.

Canadiens small team, we need Anderson

Anderson played as a top six forward when he was brought in, he was a major help during the quarantine.

When Gainey came in he had a belief that short term contracts were best for both team and player since the contract would reflect the players more current play on ice. Unfortunately his philosophy didn't work at a time when players had leverage to simply leave.

He also had a belief not to negotiate a contract during the season as it was too distracting for a player. He felt that if the team wanted the player and the player wanted to stay, a contract would be worked out while the team had " exclusive negotiating rights to the players."

He gave up too many draft picks to constantly plug holes with short term fixes.

Gomez fiasco.

On the positive he brought dignity back to the team, did make some good moves and was competent enough to drag us from oblivion.

Gainey was a middling GM, regardless of his tragedy. Very good guy though.

I'm not over-valuing Savard. I'd keep him because he has a calming effect beyond just the D-squad and because, that, compared to getting nothing back in a deal, is more valuable.

The only value I see in calling up youngsters to play D on a team in disarray because they lost Guhle for the rest of the season is if you're looking to tank.

I don't think that tanking is useful for this team that is still trying to progress and Mailloux has already been recalled, along with Beck.

Once Mailloux has been re-evaluated, I think that calling Engstrom up to see what he has in him at the NHL level would also be a good thing.

I expect to see Carrier on the right side alongside Hutson and Matheson back on his natural side, with Mailloux alongside Xhekaj, perhaps.

Hutson - Carrier
Matheson - Savard
Xhekaj - Mailloux

Everyone is over their heads with Guhle out, but I don't see anything or anyone else improving things, really, as a response to Guhle being out with an injury.
you keep savard as a 7d, any bigger role mean a weaker D group

He took a team that missed the playoffs in 4 of the past 5 seasons and turned them into a team that made the playoffs in 4 of the next 5 seasons. It's not some amazing feat but it's something a lot of GMs in similar situations try and fail to do.

And in terms of the GMs before and after he's clearly one of the better ones.

The Habs did improve under Gainey, but that was largely due to positive momentum from the 1998 draft and the fact that Andre Savard was already turning the team around.

Gainey also had some good moves, like bringing in Kovalev, bringing in Hamrlik, trading Rivet for Gorges and a 1st, trading for Tanguay, and hiring Jacques Martin.

But he had significant failings.

He didn't negotiate contracts during the season. So the team ended up losing a lot of good players for nothing. Sourray, Streit, Koivu, Kovalev, Komisarek, etc.

He was too trusting. He expected other GMs to be nice and not take Beauchemin and Hainsey, silly.

He bought at the 2009 deadline when the 2008 deadline was more important.

He was obsessed with getting a center, but he failed. There were circuses around Sundin and Lecavalier. He then overpaid for Gomez. I understand getting Gomez, but he didn't need to overpay.

I liked what Savard was doing but we can't really judge him beyond his intent, yes he started a sort of rebuild which was good, but making the team worse by selling is the easy part of a rebuild, it's building it back up that is the hard part of a rebuild and we have no idea if Savard would have done that successfully or not. It's the area that many many GMs fail at, and often requires a Crosby or McDavid to come along and carry the team.

We ended up playing the 6th most playoff games in the NHL during Gainey's term as GM (Including the season he started but didn't finish), which given where we started is extremely impressive. He wasn't perfect and yeah lots of bad moves, but even the best GMs have lots of bad moves to their name, it's not the bad moves that define you it's what you have built, and Gainey built a team that would consistently punch above their weight, and left a strong foundation to continue building on.

We've seen it ourselves recently just how hard it can be to stop being a bad team, and we've seen it with team after team who announce the rebuild is over but still can't make the playoffs with any kind of consistency. People undersell how difficult it is.

Gainey was a major part of making the team respectable around the league once again. He started building a proper scouting & development staff, worked on the facilities and many of the more invisible aspects of the organization.

He was very old school, but was definitely a team and players first guy. His asset management was terrible... but he also was dealing with an owner who was trying to sell the team at a profit.
