HF Habs: Trade Proposal Thread #89: 2024-2025 season part II

I don't think 3.25 M is that bad for Gallagher 15-20 goals 30-40 points.

Not a bargain but it would be tradeable.
Except that he is only good for the first 30 games of the season. He has done nothing since. He might be good as a 13th forward playing about 40 games a season.

Well, as we speak, Team Canada is considering Matheson to replace Pietrangelo. I think our herd is guilty of devaluing Matheson and are obsessed with focusing on his mistakes.

I said it before and will say it again. Matheson should be allowed to improve as a matured Dman. There are tons of guys in the NHL that have very good age 28-35 years. Matheson is an elite level skater and helps us escape pressure more than he creates mistakes. Give the guy a break
fair enough
good take

Gallagher is more of a concern vs Anderson yes. However, what are we going to do? Retain half his salary just so we can move him? Armia has like 2 or 3 good years left and yes, most of us would want him back but Gallagher may be blocking him.

Is retaining 50% on Gallagher and keeping Armia a good move? What contract do you think Armia gets? Term would be a sticking point for me. 3 years max

Well if Gallagher is traded with retention and Armia re-signed for less than 3.25M AAV (2-3 years max), Habs would be even Steven cap-wise - and undoubtedly better overall.

Alternatively, buying out Gallagher would cost 1.75M next year, 4M the year after and two more years at 1.75M; suboptimal, but palatable nevertheless if it means keeping Armia (or signing Olivier?) instead.

Caufield - Suzuki - Slafkovski
Demidov - Dach - Laine
Heineman - LHC/Newhook - Newhook/Anderson
Anderson/ELC - Evans - Armia/Olivier

We can’t have Matheson and Jones on the same team. Plus a green Hutson and Arber who tends to make boneheaded plays. We’d get eaten alive.

No thanks
Was working it out on screen. Updated to make Matheson main piece going the other way. Looks better IMO.

I'm not entirely against that idea. It is sad to see Gallagher fall like that. I think he is smart enough to survive but he's getting smothered with the puck because his ability to create space is very limited. Worth ethic is still there but he's not winning as much puck battles than he did before.

I do value what Armia brings to the table and yes, we should consider ways to keep him on our roster

I think Matheson is a very good 2nd pair Dman who can move the puck and take PP2 duties, play some games on 1st pair of one Dman is injured. I think he would be Perfect in VAN which Lacks puckmovers beyond Hughes. However, I don t really like him with Hutson, on the Right either…

I'm OK with Matheson on the right side but in tight games where teams play us physical, the Hutson/Matheson pairing can and will be exposed. I think both the Wings and Devils showed us that. In games where teams don't play a tight forecheck, they are very good.

Imagine Matheson with a LD like Hedman? I think you forget about the LD playing RD very quickly. Habs have improved our D core by adding Carrier but there are still some flaws to work out.

Hutson / ????
Guhle / Matheson (or vice versa... they can figure it out)
Xhekaj / Carrier

To bad Reinbacher was not 23 today. Really sucks that he got that injury but he is back now skating so lets see how he finishes this season and heads into camp next year.

I'm on the fence about if we should let go Matheson or not. I need more information from Reinbacher, Mailloux and BK. And we will get that for the rest of this year and next.

Fair assessment. Matheson is indeed an adequate second pairing / PP2 LHD, but with Hutson and Guhle on the roster for next decade, there’s hardly any future for him on his natural side.

If he finishes his current contract in Montreal (or eventually signs a reasonable extension; Guhle-like, around 5.5M), the only viable pairing I could see him being part of would be on the right side of Guhle.

It’d entail the Habs find a stalwart RHD to partner up with Hutson (Reinbacher, hopefully!, but chances are he’ll need at least 2-3 years to establish himself as 1st pairing material); Carrier would be relegated to the third pair with Xhekaj.

Yeah if there're planning on trading Pettersson, Hughes need to be on it and see if it's a possibility.

Laine-Pettersson-Demidov
Caufield-Suzuki-Slafkovski

What can we trade to make it work?

...Petterson would cost a small fortune and hasn't lived up to his big ticket since he signed it...he also comes off as lacking in the intensity department...not worth it, imo...
