HF Habs: Trade Proposal Thread #89: 2024-2025 season part II

Agreed. I was just gonna start a thread on the main board with the title "Has there ever been a Stanley Cup champion with worse 2C than Dach?", but considering my previous quite similar thread was locked in record time I will wait for a better idea.

But I agree, Dach as 2C isnt the long term answer if the goal is to win the Cup. 1 year more as 2C? Sure. It gets iffier after that.
It's far to early to know if Dach is the answer at 2c. he may be but they should still be looking for scoring line centres,.

Yes and no, keeping Crosby alone won't prevent them from tanking, but sure keeping all of Crosby/Malkin/Letang/Karlsson does. So perhaps Crosby is thinking well the team should trade the others but that he'll stay. And also worth noting they are currently at 12% odds of picking 1 or 2, Chicago who went the full tear down route is at 27% so the difference isn't all that big in terms of getting the "next" one.
We all know McKenna is going to Pittsburgh. They need a new next one to save the team from bankruptcy like Lemieux and Crosby before him.

It will be a big test this summer for Kent to see if we have our first Quartexx departure

Have to assume Matheson and Newhook are part of his long term fox hole but I would be pleasantly surprised to see one or both moved

HuGo has made mistakes and will make more in the future but this Quartexx thing is really a low effort argument. Gorton is there, Hugues was Harris's agent in NCAA and traded him.

If we could flip Matheson and/ or Newhook for a good RD I'm all for it, but it's not Matheson's fault we're using a 2nd pairing Left D as our #1 RD.

It is definitely a real thing that he has been acquiring Quartexx players every season. It's TBD if that is a problem though.

Matheson worries me because he is Hughes' favorite player/person and I'm not sure if Hughes will be willing to deal him without doing a favor to the player. Hughes would love to give Matheson a big contract extension. I think he'll wait until next season so he can negotiate a sign and trade to ensure his friends come out okay.

Newhook is another one of his best bud's and Hughes visited Nova Scotia when Newhook brought the Cup there.

He's not going to be cuthroat when it comes to these guys

How is this established?
With Hughes' own words

“I’ve known Mike since his days in Midget AAA (with Lac St-Louis Lions). “He’s a first-class human being,” Hughes said of the Pointe-Claire native who was acquired, along with a 2023 fourth round pick from the Pittsburgh in exchange for defenceman Jeff Petry and centre Ryan Poehling on Saturday. “He’s the kind of guy you’d let marry your daughter, although he’s married with a young baby at this point in his life. He’s a terrific human being.”

He’s confident the human being and teammate that Mike Matheson, 25, has become since being drafted by the Florida Panthers with the 23rd overall pick at the 2012 NHL Draft will fit right into Hughes’ and Montreal Canadiens executive vice president Jeff Gorton’s rebuild plan going forward.

“I feel really comfortable that Mike is the kind of person in our locker room, at this point in his career, that can assist our young players, be it the draft picks like Juraj Slafkovsky or our young defensemen that are trying to make their way as regular NHL players,” Matheson’s former agent told reporters. “Mike is a five-star human being who can be of great assistance to our club.”

Ok -- the personal praise for Matheson from Hughes is excessive and cringe.

If Pittsburgh blows it up and are sellers would you be interested in Malkin?

He is making 6.1 million this year and next and is then a UFA. He is way past his prime but would he be a great mentor for one year for Demidov next year?

It would bump Dach down to third line center or he could play on the wing in the top six.

Suzuki, Caufield, Malkin, Demidov, Dach, Slafkovsky would make up the top six.

If Pittsburgh blows it up I’m sure they would be looking for futures in which the Habs have lots.

Now I am not sure on the value. What would you think Pittsburgh’s asking price would be?

You don't buy out players unless you have cap space problems. Learn to live with it and let it expire like Drouin. He's not who he was and he does get smothered with the puck due to his poor skating but he's smart out there most of the time. He's not really costing us goals and MSL is managing his ice time well.

Anderson and Gallaghers 2 years of term left actually helps us with depth while we allow more time for Beck, Kapanen, Roy, and others to mature and be trusted. I find the timing of term and youth development fits. You can apply that with Matheson and Reinbacher as well.
When the Habs were not rebuilding.Gallagher's contract was an Albatross around the future GM's neck, if that GM wasn't given the green light to proceed with a genuine rebuild ad asked to tweak the lineup instead.

HuGo (the Gorton-Hughes tandem) was given the green light by Molson to actually embark on the first ever bonafide rebuild of the Montreal Canadiens.

At that point, Gallagher and Anderson's contracts were no longer albatross contracts that would prevent Hughes from making necessary moves to rebuild the team from the ground up.

Two more years after this one, both Gallagher and Anderson's contacts will be off the books, even if Hughes is unable to move those contracts before that.

The 12M saved will be earmarked for contract renewals at that point, namely for Demidov, amongst others.

In the meantime, as mentioned b other posters, including Habs Halifax, both Gallagher and Anderson will serve as expensive, but still useful depth players. What's important is that both players accept their roles lower on the depth chart and act as leaders who present a positive influence for the youngsters, buying into the team first system set forth by the head coach.

Ranting and raving about the overpayment for Gallagher and Anderson serves no purpose. At 2.5M each, we would be happy to have the contribution from two warrior veterans who sacrifice themselves for the common good.

They aren't making just 2.5M each, but the actual money they are making does not handicap the GM for the moment.

The sudden boost and rise of the Cap ceiling, plus the timely end of Dvorak, Savard and Armia's contracts will enable Hughes to re-sign both Hutson and Laine, if he so desires, as well as add Demidov and all the potential bonuses associated to his ELC. There would even be enough money to add a high priced UFA RHD like Neal Pionk, for example, since Mike Matheson and his 4.875M could be traded away as a rental in the final year of his contract, before an extension to Hutson's contract would start kicking in the following season.

Gallagher and Anderson,s contracts will just be off the books in time for the Habs' GM to use the Cap space efficiently by locking up a key player or two (Demidov and Reinbacher?)

Enough with Gallagher and Anderson being overpaid. Mistakes from the prior GM that, thankfully, have not shot the current GM in the foot.

With the Preds falling hard, O’Reilly could indeed be an interesting target ; his impact as a stop-gap middle-6 C stabiliser should be similar to Carrier’s with the D corps. Could also provide leverage to the Habs to negotiate a reasonable deal with Evans for the 4C position.

Nashville however already has three 1st and two 2nd next draft; it might be difficult to convince them to move O’Reilly without a quality prospect… Could Dvorak (without retention) + Kapanen make it happen? Habs could also afford to add a 2026 pick (2nd or 3rd) if required.

As for Andersson, that’s another story. CGY doesn’t seem to want to part with him at the moment and it would require quite a haul to convince them… My best offer for a sign-and-trade (around 7M AAV) would likely be something around CGY 1st + PIT 2nd + Matheson + Mailloux/Engstrom.
I'd love to add Rasmus Andersson, personally, but that would cost a lot of assets that could serve to move up at the draft and address other dire needs. Would still do it by returning CAL's 1st rounder to CAL, throwing in PIT's 2nd rounder, adding Matheson at 50% discount and sacrificing one of Mailloux or Engstrom as well.

Of course, if Pionk, Ekblad, or even Ceci could be had as UFAs without sacrificing any assets other than cap space, I'd prefer that over Rasmus Andersson.

Ceci is less of a sexy name, but, at 31, the pending UFA can use his shutdown skills in his own zone, his strong point shot and decent puck-moving skills to complement a more offensive D like Hutson, for example at a lower Cap hit that can help Montreal assemble even more depth up front.

It would take some pressure off of Reinbacher who could saddle up alongside Guhle in a more shutdown role with less pressure to produce offensively straight out of the blocks as an NHL rookie.

A year alongside Demidov could well rejuvenate Malkin if he can stay healthy. I'd even see him sign reasonable one-year deals to stay with the kid as long as he can still keep up.

Malkin is worth at least a first round pick ++ for it to be worthwhile for the Penguins who would be blowing it up to rebuild, I imagine, if Malkin was heading out. Crosby would likely also be given the chance to play for a contender and win another Cup.

1st rounder, 2nd rounder, 3rd rounder, 4th rounder, 5th rounder for Malkin should do the trick.

Montréal has two first rounder, two second rounders (including PIT's which they could give back to them), three third rounders, two fourth rounders and one 5th rounder.

I'm pretty sure PIT would jump at this offer, but keep in mind that Malkin will be 40 in the final year of his contract.

Still, extremely interesting to see a potential top-6 of

Caufield - Suzuki - Slakfovsky
Demidov - Malkin - Laine
Heineman - Dach - Anderson
Newhook - Evans/Beck - Gallagher

With a potential D (if we sign a UFA RHD):

Guhle - Reinbacher/Pionk/Ekblad
Hutson - Ceci/Reinbacher/Ekblad
Xhekaj - Carrier/Mailloux/Engstrom

We need a #2 or #3 Defenseman. No point in a Ceci. We already brought ib a player of that calibre with Carrier. We need guys that will move Matheson and Carrier down the pecking order.

We have to go for guys like Parayko, Pulock or Andersson. We need a proven top pair RD.

Agree

Adam Larsson would have been a good fit if he didn’t resign with SEA

Kind of an odd question isn't it? I remember just few months ago Kings fans saying Byfield was untouchable. Or has he taken the PLD path in LA?
He’ll never flourish in LA needs a fresh start like kaako

Kings are too busy trying to win cups as a treadmill team

They botched byfield and I don’t think they can fix it now so might as well move on and get some assets

100% agree. Fans need to get over it. It's not blocking us with our cap space or blocking youth. Unless if you are a fan who wants to rush our young kids to fill holes?
