Savard is so overrated on this board. If offered a 1st and the habs passed Hugo should have to take a breathalyzer test.

Savard is a 5/6 on any decent team. A bit part.
People aren't overrating Savard, people are saying that until he's a 5/6 on the Habs, he's still very much needed to fill holes on the roster because the Habs don't even have anyone to play above him.

For the 15-20 games after the TDL he is totally replaceable. If someone is offering a 1st his ass should be gone.

That’s what happens when you have a decent veteran in a team full of bad veterans. His star shines brighter since the rest are so dull.

same people who said Edmundson , Chariot were ''needed for the future''
ends up that Savard is a 3rd pair dman who cant skate. Giving a paycheck because '' the kids man'' Im sure Suzuki needed the extreme leadership of Gallagher to be a better hockey player.

Id trade him for a 3rd pick right now if the offer was available

the only ''young '' def that could make the team is Hutson and im sure Hutson can learn leadership from someone else beside David Savard

We had 3 regular NHL dmen last year and Savard was one of them. You mentioning Gallagher as your argument makes it seem like you’re saying Savard sucks just like Gallagher which is just untrue. Gallagher was a genuine liability with the team worst +/- at only 13 minutes a night. Savard was one of our most used dmen.
Gallagher sucks now

Savard might suck as of next month or next year. I’m not saying he should be waived, I’m saying DESPITE his leadership yada yada I still wouldn’t re-sign him if we had other options available.

That's why you're not an NHL GM ;)

Chiarot has been useful for a LONG time for us, even if some people on this board were whining about him. Of course at the end he was a liability but Savard is not there yet.

To make a step up in the rebuild, we need to implement our RHDs to NHL team. For young D, they usually need around 200 games of experience to fully establish themselves in the league. Right now we are at:
Barron 94
Mailloux 1
Reinbacher 0

For LHDs, it is:
Guhle 114
Xhekaj 95
Struble 56
Hutson 2
These guys need to play if we want to truly compete in 26-27.

These numbers, are the exact reason Matheson and Savard are still here. Trusting all the kids is a tough one....
That young D corps though, will age very well together for sure.

I think leadership does come from many guys, not just one...........so the young D can learn from other leaders, including themselves as leaders....
Savard does have experience that the others don't.................yet.

I don't agree. Savard may be that boring type that doesn't put up much points but he's an experienced player who plays the physical game well. That's worth a lot in the NHL and many teams are after a RD like this.

Savards value is about supply/demand. Not based on him just being a 5/6 guy. Teams rather not trade a 1st in most cases but you know what happens at a TDL... Supply/Demand!

What a player is "Worth" is not really the true narrative when you talk Supply/Demand. Therefore, your overrated narrative is not accurate

For the 15-20 games after the TDL he is totally replaceable. If someone is offering a 1st his ass should be gone.

Nobody offers of 1st when they don't know where the pick is. They usually offer it when they know and that's typically a TDL offer. Look up the Chiarot situation... I'm pretty sure the 1st was not offered until near the TLD.

If the Habs are in the playoff bubble mix in Feb, be prepared that Savard stays.

When I think about the Hutson/Savard pairing, I think less about Savard providing leadership and more about Savard providing stability so Hutson is not targeted as much by the other teams coach in the match-up game.

That is right. In order to age well, they need to play. If we extend Savard for one more year and dress him and Matheson for ever single game that is 328 games experience that our future D core miss.
They will keep Savard and if we are out of PO race and he is healthy, he will be traded. Otherwise, he stays, but they will not extend him. Similar with Matheson, they will cut his TOI and give more responsibilities to young core.

Exactly!. How do you expect Mailloux, Struble or Barron to progress with out any ice time. I love savard. But, he will be 35 in 2025..... He will also be looking for a 2-3 years contract. Signing him for 2 years will be mistake.

Savard isn't blocking kids from getting games, there are two RD slots open this year with Kovacevic and Harris gone. If the LHDs are still getting them, it's because Matheson is blocking them from advancing on the left side and they are outplaying the RHDs.

And kids will get games if they can handle it, just giving them games isn't going to turn them into NHL dmens if they can't handle it.

The chance for us to get a 1st for Savard was last year but we can probably get a 2nd
Not how it works.

Savard might be the only RD available at next TDL and the offer might comes as a 1st. Offer was unclear for Savard last year as he had two year left on his deal. Still unclear for next year and a lot will depends on the market. Teams needs VS RD available.

Allan Mitchell, a reporter for The Athletic, recently suggested that Barron could be a target for the Oilers. Given the growing speculation surrounding the defenseman, it's not out of the question that his days with the Canadiens are numbered.
"Barron is a long-term acquisition, but his speed and offensive tools make him a reasonable investment for a right-hander." - Allan Mitchell

Currently, the Oilers' defensive corps lacks depth, with Mattias Ekholm , Evan Bouchard and Darnell Nurse leading the way, but little support behind them. A player like Barron could slot into their top-4.

Acquire him with what? Especially if they see him as a top 4 RD...that's pricey.
