Just to get a worse pick, lose assets and be eliminated in the first round ?

You can't always want a high pick. At some point, we'll need to be happy if Habs select between 12-15. And we'll need to be happy when they get eliminated in the 1st round. Because it means they're moving up and progressing.

Would be great to watch him in a Habs jersey, but gotta stay focused on the main goal and stop trying to speed it up.

Habs traded for Patrik Laine. They don't make that trade if they don't have the intention of pushing the rebuild to the next phase. It's not a question of speeding it up. It's a question of having the intention to progress.

There's some deadwood to continue to get rid of (they were able to offload Hoffman). Guys like Armia and Dvorak will be gone. But you can't sit and wait for them to be gone in order for you to start making moves to advance things.

I don't want to become the Buffalo Sabres, Anaheim Ducks or Ottawa Senators, where you start to get comfortable finishing at the bottom of the standings and picking in the Top-5 every year.

I don't disagree with you when you say Montreal isn't at that point yet. But in this hypothetical, if Sidney effin' Crosby is someone who's willing to waive his clause to come to Montreal, you make an exception.
Unfortunately we just can't do that given where we're at as a team currently. Throwing away prospects and picks just to appease fans and maybe contend for a playoff spot is not beneficial to the franchise at this point. If we were already a playoff team looking for that additional bump, then I'd have no problem with making a move. We just aren't there yet.

I understand not wanting to be a basement feeders forever but one can't become reckless for meaningless short term gratification. We'll get there

It's all hypothetical at the end of the day. But when it's Sidney Crosby we're talking about, you're not exactly being reckless.

Sid is still an excellent player but by the time we're ready to really compete, he won't be in the league. So instead of targeting an expiring asset, why not target an asset more in sync with our franchise's timeline?

I think we are a playoffs team next season if we adding a line of Demidov-Crosby-Laine to what we have now.

You also probably add Beck and one or both Reinbacher and Mailloux. Probably Dobes as the back up to Monty.

Then the season after that, you have Hage and this year's habs 1st coming in, inflating an already top tier offense.

But more importantly, the leadership and work ethics no.81 would bring would be priceless.

If they really want to push this along they should hire Montgomery .I just read that he didn't want to extend his contract in Boston and was one of the main reasons he was fired.A proven successful nhl coach who also speaks french,Would be a very smart move to sign him here.I don't know why all the love for Marty. He hasn't really done a thing since he's been here.

I would not, Jiricek should be better offensively than Reinbacher but not as good defensively. And if PP1 minutes go to Hutson anyways I think Jiricek will lose part of his impact. I think Reinbacher has overall a higher hockey IQ than Jiricek but that s just me. Similar type of prospect tier though of course.

Yeah, I wouldn't trade Reinbacher for Jiricek. I like Reinbacher's game better. I don't think Jiricek has had the development leap people expected.

I think Pricer momentarily un-retires if we get Crosby lol.

I'm absolutely on board to pay the price (within reason) if it means we get Sid - it would transform the franchise long after he retires.

(but it is most likely never happening)

Yep. Get him! And Price! We make da playoffs and go on a deep run. Bring Websy back for a playoffs run too while at it. Can we get Crosby for RHP and a second?

f*** it's boring without hockey (even Habs hockey) for so many days.

Rainman is also not a fully mature adult human being like Jiricek is at their respective ages

He is not, but it's worth pointing out he was already playing top minutes at Kloten in his D0 and D1. He was already a workhorse at a young age.

I didin't know he was born in Montreal

You should hear him speak french. Definitely un ptit gars d'chez nous.

In a trade for Jiricek, we need to make sure we keep both Reinbacher and Mailloux as well. We have enough assets to make this happen.

Because Gorton, Hughes and MSL were intimately involved in helping groom & mature the USA Hockey program, specifically in Northeast over last 15-years to the powerhouse it is today … and it’s evident they are trying to get the Habs org to reflect the development system that’s in place w USA Hockey today.

matheson for hoglander+pick should do it??

1. Why do the Habs want Hoglander?

2. Hoglander is not the main piece in a Matheson trade. The "pick" would have to be at the very least a first.

Don't be fooled by the 24 goals season shooting at 20%. Hoglander would struggle to make the Habs lineup and is another small player.

I think you're responding to a Canucks fan, they likely know that Hoglander was a bit of mirage last season.

IIf we trade Matheson he got to be for a top 4 RHD who is not as good offensively but better defensively.
