You're allowed to be a rebuilding team that isn't getting absolutely killed in 95% of the games. Even management said they want to foster a competitive culture regardless of how many games they win.

So yes, trading insignificant picks when we've accumulated many of them (and will likely have even more) to improve on Evans-Dvorak-Condotta and make these losses more competitive isn't exactly a crazy unprecedented idea. Not to mention that it doesn't prevent us from trading Eller again at the deadline.

I think we can all agree on the fact that this current group of players is lacking some veterant/leadership. And I think that trading 3rd pick isn't a high price to acquire that type of help.

The problem I have here is that Eller is not what MTL needs. What this team needs is a Crosby, O'Reilley, Weber, guys that have top notch work ethic, no quit in their game and can be vocal and authoritative in the locker room. Eller isn't much of an improvement over Dvorak TBH.

Problem is that the Weber type of guys are hard to find at this time of the season... so lets KH do his job and let him get the "good fit"

I just don't understand why some people here would rather us finish closer to the playoff bubble than get another top 5 pick. We don't have enough in the pipeline to contend any time soon. Stocking the shelves is the best thing we can do right now. We don't have Price anymore where just getting into the playoffs we'd have a shot.
Because progress matters for the young leadership group that are already here. I don't want to be the Buffalo Sabres.

Your point had nothing to do with the expiring contract. You said Lars Ellers won't be the difference. That kind of thinking is faulty, you accept it right?
The poster won't accept it. Apparently you can't make these types of trades if your last place, but if you're not last place it's totally okay. So the 2nd last Hawks can trade a 5th for Beauvillier in November and then flip him for a 5th later in the season, but we can't do a similar thing in Eller.

We should stop pretending that this season is going exactly as planned with management's initial vision. Neither Dach nor Newhook can play center right now, which is hurting the team. Eller would have been a perfect stopgap until the deadline where we could have flipped him again (thus regaining "valuable" picks based on his cherry-picked examples) and give Dach/Newhook another try at center where there are only like 16 games left in the season.

Caps traded him to the Avs for a 2nd round pick a few years ago. He was already washed out back then.

There is nobody I would want on that Pens roster outside the two guy they aren't going to trade (Crosby and they aren't trading Malkin without having any 2nd line center backup to replace him).
Bunting would be a good addition. Plays the right way, good 3rd liner.
DOC would also be a good bottom 6er with size.
Poulin is another buy low candidate that I'd love.

What does a trade for a 5th have to do with Eller's trade. Habs can probably find a lot better use for a 3rd. A 5th is nothing. If they could get Eller for just a 5th they would probably have done it.

Bunting definitely gives the team the grit they're looking for up front and can play up and down the lineup. Maybe help light a fire under Anderson's ass thought I doubt it would happen.

Any kids drafted next June isn't going to turn this ship around by themselves. They will just be new rookies in the next 5ish years.

Not sure what Poulin provides but he only makes $775,000 so it wouldn't hurt.

There should be a couple in the top 5 ready for the NHL by at least the end of next season.

Ok so you want to start winning. We all do. But we need to be patient with the rebuild.
I want us to not get destroyed every game and to see the team progressing from year to year. "Winning" is a broad term. Getting better is more apt.

We were more competitive last year, which is really saying something. We were 6 games below .500 and a -53. 16 games into this season, we are already 4 games below .500 and -21. We are getting worse.

Define getting better - PP & PK are much better so far, is that not getting better?

Gallagher, Anderson and Evans have been omnipresent is games thus far, is that not getting better?

Caufield, Slaf & Suzuki are on pace to top last years performance and potentially their career highs, does that not qualify as getting better?

Check my edit, where I expanded on that.

What's holding us back is team D and goals against/game. We are by far the worse in the NHL as we talk today. Most of us expected growing pains in that area but not to this level. Center depth behind Suzuki and a very young D are huge issues in terms of the Habs moving up the standings. Then combine that we have both Hutson and Matheson in our top 4D and they are not physically strong in the D zone.

It's tracking like this team does not make any noise until Suzuki is age 28+.

A rebuild isn't linear though, as much as we'd like it to be.

I would counter lack of 2nd line able to drive puck possession & offense has had the adverse effects of more focus on Suzuki line by opponents and more pressure & time defending in Dzone thus increasing the probability of turnovers & giving up scoring chances

MSLs “concept” is all about applying pressure on the puck to ensure Habs own possession time.

With no possession threat being imposed by 2nd line the entire concept crashes & burns… which seems to be the case.

2nd line of Newhook - Dach - Armia has the worst +/- on the team… I’d say that’s more than a coincidence
