Yes and the Canucks bought out OEL and are doing just fine.

OEL was useless for the Canucks.

Gallagher, it's only his contract that's bad. But he's not useless to the team. He's on a 3rd line, averaging 14 minutes a game and works his ass off. His role has diminished. For the role he has now, he's a good fit. And he's producing at a good rate for a 3rd liner.

Suzuki, Caufield, Slaf, Dach & Newhook are all ahead of him.

Further to that, Hughes successfully offloaded Petry to the Pens the first time. Then he moved Edmundson and Hoffman this summer. Armia and Dvorak should be next and most likely Allen. He's going the more slow but methodical way to offload bad contracts. He won't do anything drastic like buying Gallagher out 3 years before his deal is up.

Savard and Allen to Edmonton makes too much sense, but finding the cap space/assets to make it work seems like it would be quite difficult.

I’d propose -

To Edmonton: David Savard, Jake Allen

To Montreal: 2024 1st round pick (unprotected), Dylan Holloway, Jayden Grubbe, and Warren Foegele as a cap dump.

Oil shore up their defense with a veteran partner for Nurse, which allows Ceci to anchor the third pairing, and pick up a veteran goalie with cup experience.

Habs get an extra first rounder and two decent forward prospects with good talent, size and speed for the prospect pool.

Little crumbs in the media, such as praise for Savard work ethic, tell me he’s highly valued. Maybe it’s the Habs gassing him up to sell him at a premium but I don’t think it’s that deep or complicated — more simple would be that the Habs rate him and want to keep him. Winning culture and what not.

Especially now that we’ve held onto pretender status. Selling him now would run contrary to everything Hughes has done leading up to now.

I find it naive to put Savard in the same breath as gally , and armia.
In fact habs record with him in the lineup is way way better
The discussion was just about how much cap space and roster spots we'll have for young players, and when, going forward.

I'm a rebuild guy, so I'd like to get good futures for Savard while he's playing well. But I do understand the value of having good vets. If Savard is traded at the TDL, I would hope we get a good vet this summer in the UFA market if needed.

We could retain 50% on one or both (if we get a 3rd party) of Allen and Savard.

Carolina and New Jersey also make sense.

No to Monahan.
Remember when people thought re-signing Gally and Petry was a good idea too?
No thanks.
Few comments:
1. Gallagher got signed for 6 years starting at age 29.
2. Monahan has had a better career, and is also 29,
3. Gallagher got $6.5M AAV
4. Monahan should get substantially less money and less term on an extension.
5. Petry was 33 and got $6.25M for four years

Completely different stories.

You’re forgetting the whole part about rebuilding and getting assets…never mind the fact that Monahan is held together with bubblegum and chopsticks.

Hughes needs to trade Allen and a d-man (most likely Kovacevic & Savard). Habs need to make some space for Hutson, Reinbacher, Xhekaj, Mailloux, Trudeau in the next years)

Matheson-Savard
Guhle-Barron
Struble-Harris
Kovacevic
Lindstrom

We have soo many defensive prospects. Fully expecting us to trade a few of them for some offensive help soon!!
