I can see if the Leafs fail to win a round this year, Matthews is a goner. One of the big American markets will be too much to resist.

Winning will help Canadian teams avoid this problem, it’s as simple as that. Canadian franchises have sucked for so long it’s no wonder guys don’t want to come or stay. Winning solves a lot of problems.

Caufield and PLD have the same agent 🫢

It will be interesting to see if Caufield tries to break the bank or sign a reasonable contract aligned with Suzuki.

He’s no dummy, clearly on paper a winger like Slaf will be perfect for him, coaching under MSL, etc. It would be nice to see him demonstrate a willingness to be part of a core for many years.
Brisson is a former Montrealer; he has a soft spot for the habs ;)

That’s literally what Tkachuk just did. That’s about as blatant a way to say “trade me” without being the bad guy.
Much prefer the way Tkachuk went about it , giving his team a chance to get something of value for him vs. how Gaudreau strung the Flames along and they ended up with nothing.

Maxim Guérim, himself a contentious figure in here whenever his tweets are posted, has now (during his vacation no less) become a crusader to snuff out lesser sorts from their basements:

😂

Oh you missed Johnny hockeys letter to Cgy fans, his agent got a PR firm to write?
Couldn’t get myself to read it. Was it sealed with a crocodile tear?

Don’t know why people are on Johnny G. He played out his contract and reaped the benefit of being a UFA. This is terrible asset management by Tre. It’s not like there haven’t been rumblings of Johnny wanting to go south.

Johnny G did what was best for him and that’s fine. Seeing how Tkachuk is handling his wish to leave, perhaps fans are questioning whether Gaudreau could have not taken a more definitive and clear stance well in advance to at least have given the Flames a chance to recoup on their loss as much as possible.

That pick would have to be an unprotected 2023 1st.

Flames had plenty of time to salvage some sort of return for Johnny G. It was no secret he wanted to go south, it’s been circling around here for years.

If Tre had a smidge of foresight when he went into his last year of his contract he would have moved him. This mess is all on Tre. Not having a star player signed a couple of days before they hit UFA is playing with fire and is a horrible way to manage an asset.

Yeah I have no problem with Johnny G. Similar to what Radulov did, which while it seemed to bug Bergevin, seemed like fair play to me. UFAs get to decide where they sign.

Gaudreau could have told the Flames he was leaving prior to the deadline, but would the Flames have traded him at that point? He helped lead them to a Pacific division title, their best regular season in 33 years, and only the 2nd time they made it past the 1st round in the salary cap era.

I can understand why Flames fans would be disappointed in Gaudreau leaving (and the Flames get nothing in return except cap space) but I think that would’ve been the outcome anyways.

I knew you’d answer that and it’s not unreasonable. It’s just a lot more transparent and clear, and with plenty of advance notice the way Tkachuk is handling his wish to leave and that’s not taking anything away from Treliving’s incompetence. I’m sure Flames fans feel much more comforted knowing exactly what’s to come with Tkachuk and that at least, the club can get something of value for him.

At least he didn't pull a Tavares, tell management he wants to stay when they asked him a few months prior, and then bail at FA

Might have been the same outcome or not but at least Gaudreau would have been openly transparent. He would have been able to say that he gave them a fair, clear, advance notice, just like Tkachuk is doing now.

Absolutely unforgivable what Tavares did and Isles fans have vilified him repeatedly over it.

If you can’t get a player to sign a long term deal before the summer before entering last year should be enough notice for a competent GM.

Guys get traded and sent down all the time, and no one blames the team. Its business. Shit I bet Romo didn’t expect this summer to be on his way to the Island. The Habs moved him because they thought it was better for the team. Teams and players move on the first second it best suits them (especially teams). There is no loyalty in professional sports and fans are delusional to expect it. I get Flames fans are upset but their anger should be directed at their shit GM for not foreseeing this.

Tre failed miserably, it’s all on him.

Did Gaudreau even know at that trade deadline he was leaving though? If you take him for his word he said he didn’t make decision till the night before (see below). Any team who hasn’t signed a pending UFA at the trade deadline has to know there is a possibility he walks.

I don’t know enough about the state of that market. I just tried to connect some dots as to why some fans may have responded negatively to Gaudreau’s decision, which was your initial comment.

I’ve never even raised the subject of « loyalty » but I do share your view on that. Gaudreau did what was best for him. The way you’re portraying Treliving, sounds like he was living under a rock, maybe even believing that he could convince Gaudreau by throwing more money at him.

Too bad the Flames ended up empty-handed.

Then, when management saw that he wasn’t committing, they should have set a deadline by which some action would be taken to protect their interest.

But as some have suggested, the Flames weren’t open to dealing him as they needed him for a playoff push. That’s a tough balancing act.

Could there be some contention stemming from Gaudreau not ending up in those cities he stated were closest to his family? I don’t know. Columbus took everyone by surprise.
