Sounds outrageous I know but could the Oilers get a better deal for him than the Sabres got for Eichel to help fill some chronic holes in the lineup that are keeping this team from becoming a serious cup contender? What do you guys think? o_O

Yes, but nowhere near enough to supplant what Draisaitl already gives Edmonton that allows them to win games currently. If you ask me, they can go deep with the roster they have (maybe just an upgrade on Koskinen for MAF), they just need to stop with the playoff no-show syndrome.

It's too late in Leon's contract for the Oilers to get real value on the deal. I don't see it.

No way a NHL GM trades away a top 2/3/4/5 player in the league in his prime. Too much risk. If the return doesn’t work out , you set the franchise back even further. It would be almost impossible to get full value in trade . If it didn’t work out , the GM would be fired and probably never get another NHL gig and go down in history as the jackass that traded Draisaitl for magic beans.
There is a possibility that a trade could make the Oilers better but no GM is going to stick their neck out and actually trade him.

Only remotely close trade I can think of for a comparison is Thornton . That failed miserably.
Lindross trade is different circumstances but could somewhat be used as a comparison?
I haven’t looked at the initial Lindross trade close enough to know who really “won” the trade.

I think he'd pretty easily get more than Eichel did, but not enough more to make it worth it. Edmonton seems like a team that can spend as much money as they want, invest in a good scouting/drafting department. They could probably get a 1G, top pair D, and top line F or "#2" C (in the sense that any C they get will be #2 on the team). For most franchises, getting the elite talent is the hardest part. Don't give up a top 3 C in the NHL.

Draisaitl for Vlasic is this generation's Hall for Larsson

you went too far. also I was told it really was Hall for Larsson and Lucic ;)

As for the premise of the OP, no way Edmonton should do it. What they should do is what they should have done last offseason. Improve their D and in net.

If Edmonton does not think they have forward depth why not play Leon and RNH at center more often. Still would have a kick ass PP, and late in game if trailing can reunite big line.

How about building the defence with actual people who can defend well. My canucks need the same thing but at least we have Hughes who can put points and Demko who can stop crazy amounts of clear cut chances.

The Oilers will cash in their (bountiful) prospects and picks and make a run while they still have McDavid and Draisaitl. They're not selling their superstars until the cupboards are bare and it is time to rebuild.

This. It's criminal that the Oilers have simply not figured out putting a highly competitive team together with those two. I get there are issues drawing players there, but come on - it's enough already. You have the two best centers in the league and you can't make it work?

How? RNH, Hyman, Keith are on NMC:s and Nurses 9,25M NMC contract kick in next year. They have nothing tradeable except thoose prospects and picks and have Yamamoto&Puljujärvi to resign. I doubt there are many takers for Kassian, Foegele etc. This is a cap-league. There is no space for new players if you dont make moves.

Wasn’t that why they signed hyman? Nuge and pool party aren’t too bad either… get one more solid top 6 forward. But I think what they really need is a bonafide starting goalie. Smith is clearly too injury prone/ old.

Oh yes that is needed too but that forward group is not deep enough you can't be completely dependent on 2 players

It's really tough to strategize what you need to do with that roster. It's the Penguins circa 2010 or 2014. Your studs get paid and it's tough to fill things in. It's the perils of having generational talents. Some of their signings have just been yuck as well. Not unlike the Penguins, Shero wasn't the GM needed to take them to the next level, not unlike Holland isn't the guy to do it for them. Honestly, they need a Rutherford in there who is not afraid to make moves. They need to find a couple of swaps to make and stop signing garbage players. Then you need to get on your development staff to actually start developing players. You look at the players they've moved out in the last couple of years and it must be sickening from an Oilers fan POV.

That Nurse extension is going to be a killer when it comes to cap space. Woof.

Get rid of Seabrook, Smith, let most of those UFAs walk. Then they seriously have to look at bringing in depth from the ranks.

Tough spot for McDrai to be but thems the breaks when you break the bank.
