What would you rather take a chance on, the ~25th pick and Hollander turning into anything, or Matt Murray being better than his numbers are showing this year?
The pick and Hallander. I do not want any part of paying Matt Murray $7m+ for two cups with Pittsburgh. What would you rather take a chance on, the ~25th pick and Hollander turning into anything, or Matt Murray being better than his numbers are showing this year?

I'm not familiar enough with the situation to say for sure, but my assumption is that he would. He'd be an RFA, but he knows the team he's dealing with just gave up one of their best wingers to acquire him. It reeks of danger, to me.You think he demands that much after losing his net?
I was thinking 2 x $5 but maybe that’s too optimistic.
Matt Murray sucks. Can we move on from talking about backup goalies to fill our net?
To me, I think serviceable goalies can be found all over the place for a lot less than Zucker. I’d bet Georgiev could come in here and be a .915-.920 guy.
We can’t add a good goalie this year...Yeah I don’t think a goalie should be a part of a Zucker deal unless it’s in addition to the 1st and prospect we’re all hoping for/expecting. Something like Zucker+Anas/Mayhew/other low value piece, for 1st+prospect+goalie maybe.

I'd be more concerned about the term than the cap hit, though the latter worries me too. If you figure you can get him on a reasonable 2- or 3-year deal... maybe. He sucks this year in a similar way that Dumba sucks this year. Could be a mirage.
He also has 2 "full" seasons of .919 and .923 save percentages and 2 playoff runs of .923 and .937
I'd agree that I wouldn't feel comfortable tossing a long-term, big money deal at him. But I'm also not sure he'd demand one. Hellebuyck got his deal after a .924 regular season and a .922 postseason; Murray is at .900. He's 25 (soon-to-be 26) so it could be a long-term solution if it works out, and from his perspective, two years behind one of the better defensive teams in the league could set himself up for a nice 5-6 year deal at 28.

I don't know, there's still something about using Zucker to acquire a goalie that rubs me wrong. It feels like a position where you can shop from either the top or the bottom shelf and get similar results.
Holtby is definitely an upgrade and an interesting direction to take the team. I just think giving term to a UFA goalie is a dangerous propositionIs everyone just assuming a Dubnyk buyout after this season? If so:
2020-2021 Cap Hit: $2,666,666
2021-2022 Cap Hit: $833,333
I am not horribly against it but we would need to figure out an actual solution going forward and the UFA options are slim, not zero, but slim. If GMBG thinks we have a chance to compete as soon as next season with the addition of Kaprizov and others via trade and FA then the buy-out is probably the best option and you bring in someone who can hold the fort better than Dubnyk/Stalock have for 2 years and see what you have with Khakko/Robson/Jones when Stalocks deal is up after he is dangled in expansion.
Just for discussions sake: (I can't emphasize this enough, discussions sake) I am not saying this the best option out there and it's fool-proof but it is something to talk about.
One soon to be UFA that I can't see being resigned is Braden Holtby. Samsonov is having one of the best rookie seasons in recent history and will be their guy in the playoffs and future. (****, he is 16-2-1 with a 2.12 GA% and .925 GA% ) Also, there is no way Washington can afford him. Backstrom is getting a $3M+ bump after the season and they aren't shedding much cap. Admittedly, Holtby hasn't been great the past few years but he would be an upgrade on where we're at right now I think. (maybe?) Not sure what he'd make but his current cap hit is $6.1M and I don't think he'd get a raise given his age and play this season. (Though he's been very good in the playoffs, historically.) 2/3 year deal to stabilize the net and hopefully Kaako is ready in some capacity to be with the club full time when Stalock's deal is done.
Also, Matt Murray does not suck. Yeah, he's lost his net to a stud young guy (whose top 3 in every single category in the league) but he's 25 for god's sake. You know who was 25 when the Wild let him leave? Darcy ****ing Kuemper who was on track to be a Vezina finalist before he got hurt.
You don't write off 2-time cup winning goalie when's he 25 years old.

Yeah, it's not great. You're probably right. I guess I'm just not all that enamored with a pick in the late 20's.
Yeah, it's not great.
For all the talk of rebuilding being the only path toward success, I'd like to see a rundown of all the teams that have done these kinds of sell-offs and what the assets returned actually turned into. I get that there's a chance that these late 1sts could turn into core guys, but in general don't they just end up being roleplayers at best? The McDonagh/Miller trade is the first recent-ish one that comes to mind and the results on that one seem pretty whelming.
Vladimir Namestnikov
- Traded for a Nick Ebert and a 4th (2021)
Libor Hajek
Brett Howden
1st (2018)
- Used on Nils Lundkvist
2nd (2019)
- Used on Karl Henriksson
It's a "haul," but two years later the best pieces there appear to be Lundkvist and Howden. The best case scenario for a Zucker trade is probably going to be two prospects with similar upside, which I understand the value of but is still kind of depressing.
