Insiders said Jets were in on Chechryn. Not the same as "sitting around". Apparently Arizona liked Ottawa's higher draft picks. I may still label the Jets as sitting around if they do not do anything productive by tomorrow though. We will see.
I’m not suggesting that. I’m saying if nothing else is going through at least use a few hundred thousand and a late pick to get a competent goalie as our #2 heading into playoffs.

It's funny because I think that both coaches he's played for here have instituted the same type of game. North South, chip and chase, grind down low, funnel pucks high shoot, screen and net front.

Players like Connor get artistic license because they generate and produce consistently by stepping outside the lines, but can also function within the system and have the iq to understand when to deviate.

Ehlers seems hell bent on writing his own script, and if he was a consistently elite producer I think he'd get away with it.

In the right system, I think Ehlers could be dominant, but there's 2 problems with that: the Jets aren't going to change their system to suit one player, and 95% of teams do the same thing.

Yup guys like Scheifele, Wheeler and Perfetti also know how to play creatively within the confines of the system. It's why they are trusted more. To me the Jets want an overload transition offense through the nz with dmen jumping up. But once in the ozone they want more of a cycle and puck move scheme until a good shot opens up. All of Conner, Perfetti, Wheeler and Scheifele understand spacing and timing well. So they can manage the puck until what they are looking for opens up.

Ehelers on the other hand doesn't generally play that hold up and give and go game.

Ehlers has and likely always will be more of an off the rush producer.

Except it still doesn't make us better this year, and Schmaltz is in no way a 2C. It's already been discussed that he is not good at C.

I'm on board with Schmaltz, but as a longer term RW replacement for Wheeler.
yeah i just don't see Bones trusting him at C either. guy got bumped for anisimov at C in chicago, then traded for a C in Strome, and hasn't stuck out at C in Zona of all places, not exactly a haven of strong top-6 Cs. then you add the injury history where higher significance if a C is hurt vs a W.

id like Schmaltz as a top-9W as you noted though, especially with that cap-hit and term. but as a top-6C replacement i don't think he's that.

Based on his stats he produces more at Wing for sure but he was also tasked with the 1C role on a dumpster team. I'd be more than willing to give him a shot at 2C and if it doesn't work then he can easily slot in on the wing and we try Perfetti there.

Besides I'm not to concerned with getting largely better this year. We aren't sniffing a Cup.

Imo I think the plan is to try Cole at C next year if Dubois is gone. I see them following the same template that Ottawa did with Stutzle.

I would also like to see Schmaltz but also for the wing spot and as some faceoff cover for Cole.

Yeah I think Schmaltz would be some nice insurance there. There is no guarantee either can be long term 2C's but both are worth a shot.

He can be given a shot at C, but every Yotes fan has indicted he is not good at C. Sure it could be because of the team, but that is still a risk to assume he can play C.

As for this year, I'm not looking to move key pieces and picks for rentals, but there is plenty the team can do to be better this year, and set themselves up for subsequent years. Moving Ehlers right now makes 0 sense.

The team can still get a guy like Schmaltz for a 1st plus something likely small, and still have room for another smaller forward add. The team would be better now and Schmaltz still has term. It doesn't need to be one or the other.

Remember that this kind of move is entirely predicated on getting BOTH Sanheim and Schmaltz. There is no need to move someone like Ehlers unless both are coming in and there is also no need to move Ehlers to either of those teams to facilitate it.

Seems like a lot to get done in two days. Most of these moves seem like summer moves to me.
Yeah that's the fantasy part of it. A team is built on personal relationships, and on ice performance. Fans tend to look at stats, sometimes maybe just WAR models, and say get rid of this guy, that guy, without knowing anything about how the player impacts the team. Look at the Quick trade, apparently it caused some grievances in L.A. Even though the Kings weren't getting the goaltending they needed. I am willing to bit that no core player gets traded this deadline. I'll bet my shirt. A guy like Stanley is tempting to trade, but realistically he's been more impactful than Ville this season, so maybe that's an offseason decision. How do you get traded from Winnipeg? You ask to be. And if you are good Chevy won't even listen to you, unless he gets a good deal for you. But for Lemieux, Petan, no problem. I wonder if Harkins gets traded, or promoted, because he kind of got the screw this year.

I think it will come down to foot speed for Cole. If he can continue to improve his then I can see him sticking. He already reads the play like a center in all zones.

Yeah there is definitely some potential for him there and I think he likely gets a shot the moment PLD is gone.

Sometimes you gotta make the hard decisions for the better of the team though. Keeping guys past their due date is a recipe for being eternally mediocre.

yeah the Jets top-6 is good enough. ehlers for schmaltz doesn't really help much more. and schmaltz is injured now too.

the bottom-6 needs talent.

We don't necesarily have to trade Ehlers for Schamltz. We could just as easily move Ehlers or whomever is getting dealt to clear the cap to another team to recoup futures. It doesn't even necesarily have to be Ehlers. We just need to clear a little over $5m somewhere. Could just as easily be Pionk.

Still makes 0 sense IMO. Even if Ehlers is moved to a 3rd team for parts, losing Ehlers and adding Sanheim and Schmaltz makes us marginally a better team if at all. Because Schmaltz doesn't replace Ehlers and is at best a wash (and we already needed to add up front so we're still lacking), and adding Sanheim to the roster only makes us marginally better because they will sit Samberg most likely and the problem is Pionk.

More and more I'm hoping Chevy is not out looking for rentals and doesn't want to use up his 1sts and top prospects. He is looking at remaking his roster and using the frenzy around the TD, to get players he wants and with as much term as possible. I do wonder if we see roster players moved as part of that. @Hunter368 mentioned PLD, I doubt Chevy goes that far but now would be the time to get the biggest return if you knew there was zero chance of him re-signing long term.

So then we move Pionk. I really don't care who we move just that we clear the little over $5m in cap to do it.

Perfetti at centre is scary as hell to me. Don’t see his skating as improved enough for that. It’s going to kill his offence as he tries to keep up defensively. As much as we struggle in transition with Schiefele and Dubois and generally with say the Avs top 6 and many other teams…Perfetti in that role is hard to see as anything but an unmitigated disaster.

Yup, more than anything else if we upgraded our bottom 6 i think this team could win a few games in the playoffs .

if you want to clear cap the easy start is the D which is one of the expensive groups in the league (behind BOS, STL, VGK), and it certainly doesn't perform like it.

id like schmaltz, but removing someone from the top-6 to insert schmaltz does not help us that much this year. it doesn't address what's been a weakness for nearly 40 games.

Is the trade deadline really when you make that decision though? If you have the confidence to start the season with a player, you should have the confidence to finish it with them. Chevy knows these guys better than any of us. Who is past due here? Wheeler is losing his wheels but you can bet that every player on the team respects the guy. Ehlers is coming off another serious injury, so I don't know if he has fallen off, or just hasn't got back on yet. He's probably more valuable in a draft day trade than a trade deadline trade. At least one third of teams right now are trying to unload salary to offset the potential losses that come without playoff revenue. Same would apply to Pionk.

I don't know about that , if Scheifele could become a better skater i think Perfetti could too. Perfetti definitely seems like a guy that will continually work at getting better.

Disagree, but we’ll have to see.

Cole is a very smart, talented and driven player. If any kid was going to make himself into an NHL centre by sheer force of will, then he’s the one to do it.

But we’ll see. They tried with Roslo, who had some of the tools but maybe lacked the toolbox. Why wouldn’t they give Cole a shot?

I also think the game is changing a bit, and the possibility for a small centre with supporting wings may be more plausible going forward.
