Near where sand and waves meet.
Josi, forsberg, and duchene are all producing at or above career norm paces.

Granlund, nino, and ekholm are only about 5 points over 82 games off career norm paces.

Joey and McD are about 15 points over 82 games off career norm pace.

I think you could argue with a better performing team everyone but mcd and joey would be career norm pace or better. Now if the contract is bad, thats on poile.
Granlund is well below at 5on5 performance ... his empty net assists to Duchene early help his numbers. He is also one of the more easily moved based on ability of other teams to fit him in their cap and easily replaced with his shift to wing and Tomasino / Evangalista in the pipeline.

I agree but he's not going to retain multiple years on a player to make it.
Duck duck goose analogy aside, that is the next logical step for him to make the team better/younger, right? It's really the only way to rid the team of some of the deadweight salary wise.

I have said for a long time that Johansen being overpaid doesn't really matter if it fits into the salary structure of the team as a whole, especially if there isn't a replacement for him. The contract fit in the salary structure of the team and there was never a replacement, well, things have changed, there potentially (most likely) are replacements and his salary, because of the extended flat cap, is now a problem.

There is no way Poile just sits on his hands this trade deadline or off season and doesn't look at retaining salary on Granlund and/or Johansen. It's the only way for the team to move forward given the circumstances.

I'm actually interested to see what Poile does at the deadline with the series of paper moves over the past couple of months. Three players "sent down" yesterday yet not with the Ads in Chicago today .... multiple moves over the all-star break. The team can absorb over $10mil of deadline hit for the rest of this season.

I’m going to call Fabbro to Bruins and we take Craig Smith to make the cap work. No idea what the return will be.

Let's not get silly, Poile will not trade Saros nor should he.

I think we should focus on moving the bigger pieces, like Granlund. He's expendable and could be dealt for a reasonable return.

If there's bad blood with Trenin and the organization, and you can get a haul for him, move his ass.

I wouldn't touch our defense right now. It's thin as is, and the pipeline is dry. Leave it be (unless you can move McDonagh which is a pipedream).

Say,

:pens Granlund

:nashville 2nd round pick + B prospect

--
:leafs Trenin

:nashville 1st round pick + Niemelä

We'll go into next draft with two 1st rounders, two 2nd rounders, two 3rd rounders and two 4th rounders. Talk about kickstarting your re-tool into already top-10 prospect pool.

You finish out the year:

Forsberg - Pärssinen - Duchene
Nino - Joey - Glass
Jeannot - Sissons - Tomasino
Smith - Novak - Jank

Watch and see and be prepared to be disappointed. I think Poile makes some moves but not the ones people want to see.

The bolded is what precludes the notion entirely.
Decent is the ultimate in subjective. There would be a wide range of packages people would probably accept for Saros if all opinions were voiced.

If Brandon Hagel returned two 1sts, and two prospects, Trenin can definitely fetch a 1st.
I'll be interested to see how many 1sts are tossed around this year. A 1st seems like it's going to be pretty highly valued for this draft.

Boston is a team that could be interested in adding grit and depth while also feeling very confident in only trading away a late round 1st this year. I am just guessing we see fewer of the tweener teams looking to move a 1st like we have in some past years.

Yeh these paper transactions as of late have me wondering whats going on. If we arent buyers per Poile, why are we so interested in nickle and diming cap all of a sudden (unless ownership has ordered him to save money due to lower ticket sales.)

I don't think Trenin gets a 1st, I'd like to be proven wrong though.
I wouldn't even trade him for a late 1st, unless as Scoresberg noted there is some lingering bad blood that makes the team 100% sure he's going to leave as a UFA anyway. People vastly overrate the value of late 1sts. They are a coin flip of even being an NHL player... in 5 years time. Trenin truly should return a 1st, otherwise be kept for next year.

Our 2017 late 1st is playing pretty good right now

Things have gotten bad enough that they have made me agree with Jared Stillman of all people.

Just thinking about listening to Stillman is enough to drive me crazy. I can't imagine actually doing it while driving... I would probably just decide that driving off the road is better. You are much stronger than I am hah.

As soon as Stillman’s previous co-host took over as the first mic on the midday show, I can’t remember her name, it’s almost unlistenable now too. I’ve gotten to the point I turn that station off after 9am and just listen to the podcast of Chase’s show segment on hockey. (Thankful for that fast forward button on podcasts)

Oh I don't normally unless I catch some Pred news. Besides, my drive home is like 4-5 minutes if traffic is slow

If Trenin wants to stay then I wouldn't trade Trenin to get him back either. :thumbu: And he's one who already panned out!
I highly doubt a team would trade away a kid with 9G and 4A in 19 games playing on arguably their most productive line. That’d just be bad asset management. So you don’t have to worry about getting him back, especially for just Trenin.

Possible there are some elements of the pending sale whereby potential nickle and diming, along with not paying for fired coaches, has some value at a higher level. :dunno:

I'm not worried about it. But I do like Trenin more than Tolvanen. We should have both of them in our lineup tonight, however, so it's kind of a moot point.

No a pipe dream, but pipe nightmare. What are the offers for Saros?
Keep him for now. What if the TML bomb again in the playoffs? I lead with Saros and anyone they want other than Josi and Forsberg for Matthews, assuming he signs long term with us. It finally gives us an elite center to build a team around. Other moves might have to happen to clear some cap space but sometimes you need to shake things up. Toronto will not lose AM for nothing.

This all depends on them crapping the bed but we may have the pieces that could make this viable for both clubs.

Id also keep an i on edmonton for ekholm/saros. Their defense is thin and campbell has been a disaster. Theyre running short on time with draisaitls sweetheart deal and at this point id have to imagine mcdavid and draisaitls patience must be running thin.
