And if there are no takers for Toffoli, what do we do here?

Do we re-sign a 3 year deal and give him some money, or longer term but less money and hope not to go through the whole term?

Or are we all convinced he shouldn't be on the team going forward?
There's no scenario where there are "no takers" for Toffoli. If Fitz says "okay I'll trade him for a 2nd" he would get 10 phone calls immediately.

He will be traded for a conditional 2nd if necessary, NJ retaining 50%. They can't re-sign him. He hasn't looked great here and they badly need chips to improve goaltending.

What a weird trade. Guy is washed up, just made it through waivers, and was recently in the player assistance program.

Good on them if they can make it work, but it's a strange move, even with the retention.

I like the bet on a guy that was elite just a few years ago and isn’t that old. Yes, it’s a long shot, and it’s not free, but the upside is huge.

I really wish we would dumpster dive more. Look what Montreal was able to do with Monaghan.

Still only 31 years old, so not sure why (after a fantastic career) he would suddenly be toast. Doesn't make a lot of sense. Might be a good buy low, decent ceiling pickup for Carolina. Also comes with a ton of playoff experience.

there's noooo way he won't have a taker

think fitz would rather take some kind of cut price than lose him for nothing. but it sounded like we weren't close on term/AAV. maybe we circle back during summer

I mean, if all the major destinations have already taken their guy. I mean, EDM, Carolina, Rangers, already got their fill. (not that we'd do a deal with the Rags)

Who, realistically is left, as a realistic destination: LAK?

I don't think we should re-sign him either, but I can envision it happening.

The drugs/substance abuse problem. It was well commented he is struggling with that (still(?))

the major players could still offload existing wingers and have Toff replace them. but any bubble teams might... wings? isles?

WPG maybe. I will say the returns on the wingers so far have me concerned the market will be light. Also apparently Eberle's on the block too.

I really don't know too much about his situation, but it seems he went away for treatment and was cleared to come back.

I would assume (hope?) that Carolina did a LOT of due diligence on that subject matter and felt comfortable enough to move forward with the trade.

I'm sure that's also something that could have been affecting his performance and partially explain the decline in production.

On a trade related note:

So Carolina just rapidly shifted their roster around....... Saturday will be very interesting game for us.

I actually slightly suspect it will increase our chances of winning on Saturday. On CAR end, too much immediate roster overhaul with new guys coming in with no time for adjustments or even learning.

If there is hope to claw back in, this game may be for the taking actually, assuming their new guys make it on time for Saturday, and our guys are on mini-high from Timo hatty, good vibes game.

OK i can see those teams, minus NYR. DET i'm kinda iffy on too.

If NJD does a deal with the Rags again, like the Graber one, ill be pretty disappointed. Particularly if people are saying Kakko is coming back, lol.

Carolina is a weird team. They've been successful/sustainably so for few years now thanks to consistent drafting, but they do make some real weird moves that really don't pan out to "fringe" around the roster.

Emily Kaplan said a similar thing on the game broadcast last night, NJ almost certainly will acquire a goalie today but it won't be a long-term guy. Just a stopgap to take some of the heat off Schmid/Daws.

The whole Markstrom thing is bizarre. The owner thinks that trading Markstrom sends the wrong message to the fans and the locker room, yet they had no issue giving up Lindholm, Tanev, Hanafin.
I assume that means they want to just try to reload for next year and are okay giving up rentals now? Trading a guy under contract for the next two years after this = full rebuild. Trading guys under contract for just this season = merely cashing out on an unattainable playoff berth. Canadian teams and markets don't generally go for full rebuilds.

I can see Fitz unloading Holtz in a deal (maybe not today) but in offseason even if its a forward-forward swap with another team.

if the Rangers offered Kakko for Toffoli I'd do cartwheels.
