I am expecting a player that can be in the second line/third line, whether it be a center or winger TBD.

While we are pretty good at the depth of the defense...I still think we can use a defensive D with a bit of edge. Gudas infuriates me but man a player like him is great to have in the back end.

Brad Marchand said it best
"If you look at our team in the past, guys have tried to take less to win because we know that it bleeds through the lineup," Marchand said. "If you can have six guys that make lower salary other than three it's a lot harder to play against and that's why we've been good for so long."

Until this is fixed Leafs are going nowhere,
What words in the OP confused you? This has nothing to do with the topic.
If you need help, just ask.

Well the first 2 are not going to happen, I'm not even sure why you have #2 as an opinion, they are a top 5 team they aren't selling their UFA's, they MIGHT use them to balance the money in a trade but they aren't selling them.

#3 is probably most likely because Matthews is eligible for extension in 5 months, Dubas has no contract, Keefe has no contract they can't afford to f*** around.

I'd like to see them make a move for a top 6 quality forward, ideally a center, and use them to elevate the third line as we don't really need a top 6 upgrade per se when healthy. Beyond that, I do think we could use another defenseman as well.

Question isn't what you want, we have lots of those threads.
What do you see them doing?

Apologies, I quickly jotted my idea.

Knowing Dubas it’ll be an acquisition that we don’t see coming. But I definitely think we acquire something similar to Lybush last year (e.g., Gabrikov, Schenn) and maybe Laughton? Might be expensive.

I however think Dubas recognizes the need to bolster leadership which is where Toews would be ideal. Maybe one stop shop Toews + Murphy and send Kerfoot the other way with some value assets appended to.

While he's fundamentally not wrong in the comments on 6 vs 3 being harder to play against, there is some pretty important context left out from his comments. Most of the Boston players were signed several years ago and took reasonably market comparable contracts when they did. It was post McDavid extension that contracts ballooned.

Pastrnak will change that this off-season.

...and here we go....now it's a Bruin discussion. :thumbu:

Which is great and mentioned in many other threads but that doesn't address the question asked here.

The squirrels will be along soon enough to take it off topic, lets try and keep it on topic as long as possible.

That's fair. My bad.

I would say that he goes all in.

I think Dubas goes for the complimentary top 6 forward. I don't think it's going to be for Meier. I think it will have to be a rental like Bertuzzi or Jeannot to bring the physicality to either line and also help Bunting out from having to be a pest by himself.

I also think that they get some depth forwards for the playoffs. As much as I like what McMann, Anderson & Hunt have been able to provide in a limited time, it seems like Keefe/Dubas will look for an answer there. Simmonds can fight, but has taken too many costly penalties when he's in the game. So I'd be looking for Patrick Brown for a prospect swap or Raddysh in a bigger deal.

I haven't moved off of getting McCabe since before the summer. I was hoping for a top 4 defenseman that can replace what Muzzin brought and I think that can be had (partially) in McCabe, Nick Leddy or even Cam Fowler to an extent.

Goaltending too.

I don't see us going for a big move

We won't get Meier, and it's been reported multiple times Dubas won't move a 1st for a rental. Outside of Meier the only non-rentals I can think of are Henrique and McCabe

We'll get 1 or 2 bottom 6 pieces, maybe a depth defenseman and nothing big will change regarding the composition of the club

I see them adding one or two bodies. We could upgrade D, #2LW and #3C..... We've all debated what each person believes is the position of the most need, and we've done it in a vacuum. We don't actually know what the other team wants(except maybe with Chychrun) , and many ignore what the other team needs.

What Dubas is going to do, is pick up the phone and have conversations... see what the prices are, and try and figure out how he can maximize both the present and the future, with those assets. I feel like many prices will be lower this year... it just seems like there are more sellers than usual.

Dubas has claimed in the past, that he likes trading for players with term... and I hope/think that continues. If I try and predict what will happen, that is more likely falling into the... what I want to happen, and not what I think will happen... any of a D, #2LW and #3C are on the table.. market prices will determine what we do.

I don't expect any more than two additions. You start changing a team more than that, and you risk messing with chemistry... even so, you never know how well your additions will mesh with a team, no matter how talented, or well they play in someone else's system.

There will be deals... it will be entertaining.

Minor tweaks is all hopefully. This team has the talent to advance it just has to develop that 'win at all cost" attitude to do so. There is no player whose acquisition is going to miraculously raise their inner need to win. That has to come from within.
A decent middle 6 forward and a d-man with some snarl should(depending on injuries) be enough.

I see them adding a forward but it wont be a big name. It will be a mid 6 forward who can score off the rush and PK.
If they can trade Kerfoot, then another forward will be coming in.

With my magic ball seeing into the future I predict Mr. Dubas will either:

1) Do nothing major, ensuring another first round exit.

2) Make a big trade for a top six winger (left handed) or top 4 physical dman. In exchange he will give a handful of pick (hopefully not the first as this years draft is deep) and a top prospect (Knies, Niemela, etc). With his shortsighted approach to signing contracts he can’t do both, so it’s either one or the other. In this case they may win a round or two, but fail to reach the finals. There’s a good chance they fail in the first round again, too, which I also find likely due to our boys not having the clutch factor.

Either way I’m hoping Mr. Dubas will not have a new contract regardless at the end of this season, and thus Leafs Nation will be able to rejoice in a Dubas-free world as the team tries to navigate resigning Matthews and continuing to compete, or enter a rebuild.

I trust my magic ball as it has yet to fail me. For example, my magic ball told me the Leafs would lose in seven games last year against the Lightning, and it was correct. All hail Semper Fi’s magic ball!

Unfortunately, dont see any big-time additions. When it comes to the forward group, I think our additions will be Sam Lafferty and Max Comtois

I'm honestly not sure about defense

Probably a couple of small moves. If Dubas goes all in and the team loses first round he’s gone. If they lose first round but prospects and most picks are still around he can have that to fall back on and get a one year show me extension.

They could get someone I guess. This is pretty much the year they need to find it in themselves to win a series or it all really. If they can't get it done this year they really need to look to trading a big name or two. Not really much other choice because something is just wrong with the culture or something.

Can we just admit that we wish our players play like the Bruins. IF our players collectively have the mentality of the Bruins, we would be a true contender

They do not play with enough care or desire. They don't stand up for each other or get in the mix of it, no sticking the neck out here. If a team with this amount of talent even without trades can not find it in themselves to go far, they have a serious issue in that room.

The level of talent is ridiculous and to have not taken a single series? Pathetic.

To the Leafs... Grow some balls and play like your lives depend on it or at least like you want it more than anything in the world.
