Trade Deadline Thread (March 3)

  • Xenforo Cloud will be upgrading us to version 2.3.5 on March 3rd at 12 AM GMT. This version has increased stability and fixes several bugs. We expect downtime for the duration of the update. The admin team will continue to work on existing issues, templates and upgrade all necessary available addons to minimize impact of this new version. Click Here for Updates
I really don’t understand how we don’t upgrade the bottom half of our D. Even a Bryson + 2nd for a clear upgrade on the bottom pair would positively impact us. Really hope we see something like that still.

I know I'm going to take a ton of shit for this -- but it's still entirely plausible that the guy Adams just traded for is a clear upgrade over Bryson.

He's obviously not a top 4 D......but let's give the guy at least a game or two before deciding he's no upgrade.

And the senators and red wings might make the playoffs while we dont. I dont think the Sabres front office cares about the ultimate results this year. It’s about sustained success.

Caring about where these teams are right now doesn’t matter. Building an annual SC contender matters

Explain how failing to address the defense helps any of this?

Sustained success? Getting their players some help to get them into the playoffs this year is part of the growth of the team. Putting it off until next year so they can retain on some picks that have a traditional 25% or lower chance of turning into an NHL player is a missed opportunity.

it's made worse by seeing just how little a player like chych went for. If we had made that trade i think the entire board would have celebrated regardless of some of us being apprehensive about chychrun before.

I've been one of the more vocal guys here that's been "meh" on Chychrun. If you were to tell me that we could have gotten him for a top 5 protected 2023 1st and 2 2nds.......not having to touch any of the upcoming prospects......I would have been gleefully celebrating right with you, mostly. I think. I'd still have questions about his fit......but at that price, it'd be worth the risk.

So they took a different approach? Isn’t it too soon to say who was right? Aren’t they below us in the standings?
Better be proactive then reactive and it's not like they traded for rental but a guy with term who is younger then Tage. I guess we will se if the guy from russia we pick with our 15th this year will better in 2027.

A giant step toward being a SC contender would be adding a top-four Dman in his prime, at a fair price.

There's an equally strong argument to be made that by just missing the playoffs this year, it'll grow the team. Maybe even teach something to management too.

Or it will show the team that vibes don't matter and the GM and owner won't help them to get to the post-season. It certainly shows that to the fans.

I’m of the mind right now that nothing will change Adams’ mind.

He was poking around Chychrun. Several times over the last year if the rumors are true. He KNOWS we need another defenseman with a high talent level.

Maybe next time the opportunity like this comes up, he'll be more aggressive. Sucks to have lost this opportunity (kind of? still question the fit). But if he learns to be more aggressive as a result.........

Given how vibe-heavy that KA seems to be.............if he gets the hint that his inaction are killing the vibes, I believe he'd make a more significant move. I honestly think that right now, DG and the vets in the room are telling him "Hey, we've got this." If they miss the playoffs, KA can say "Hey, you tried....you need help. I'm going to help you".

Now, if we miss the playoffs and KA does nothing but hope for natural growth.............that will be problematic.

I don’t disagree with that or that route.

I also don’t disagree with riding out this young core this year and holding on to valuable futures for a little longer.

They should care and I am not sure how you feel you can speak for them

Its a lot easier to build on success of making the playoffs than Adams sitting on his hands and missing the playoffs.

Martin Biron- Getting Bob Corkum deflated us.

Thats a genuine quote so forgive me when you speak for the front office and players that I don't believe you.

He doesn't have the excess draft capital in future years to make that move right now. Between now and the draft, those picks have value to improve the roster. After that, the luster of the value of the picks comes off and typically the miss rate on risk for a prospect is such that a couple of guys taken in the 2nd round a couple years ago isn't going to have the same value as unused picks. That's why Kisakov and Poltapov aren't going to get the same thing - they're much more known quantities and their development path is much more set.

There is opportunity cost they are passing up. There is no certainty that a player of Chychrun's or Ekholm's talent level will be immediately available from this summer through next trade deadline.

I spent all day watching as much Chychrun footage as I could find (good stuff, guy is the real deal) after so many teams that were allegedly in on acquiring his services pulled off trades for defenders, which seemed to leave Buffalo in an optimal position to acquire him. Turns our, they were in an optimal position to acquire him, but heaven forbid we part with this year's middling first rounder and a couple of seconds because that's gonna be the difference maker for a team with a gazillion high end first rounders already on the roster and in the developmental pipeline.

Joel Armia, come on down! You too, Hudson Fasching.

If he didn’t learn that lesson by having the team get this close after he left those glaring holes in the off-season…he isn’t learning shit.

He was handed a GIFT. A team that succeeded in every area it could be expected to…all but the ones he failed to address knowing they were holes. Goalie. Bottom half of the ? defensive forwards. Whoever is stuck with Olofsson.

Given infinite cap space and assets to address his failures…he watches everyone else with less do it instead,
