While I get your point, Canucks haven't made any trades since. What the little bit of capspace allowed them to do was ice a full roster for the rest of the season and a little bit more wiggle room at this deadline.
Its not over, and that cap space was still important as you said to either ice a team, or even sign a hotdog loving 3 time cup champion.

Calgary is clearly rebuilding and you think they’d accept an anchor like Kuz’s contract for nothing? Huh. Dream world stuff.
They're not going to rebuild. That's not what they want to do. That's from ownership. They're only trading their UFAs because they don't want to get embarrassed again when they walk for nothing. You clearly don't pay attention to Calgary at all.

Even in the Lindholm trade, very little of that transaction was "payment" to take on Kuzmenko. You could view the core of it as 1st + Bruz for Lindholm. So at most, the Canucks were paying a depth pick and C-prospect for Calgary to take on Kuz.

So yes. I maintain it would not have been that hard to clear Kuz.

Okay. That's kinda annoying. I'd gladly give up our first next year as the equivalent to that package.

JR wasn't cooking. He took a nap and forgot to set the alarm.
Pretty we still need to clear cap even with that retention

henrique and carrick could make the oilers bottom 6 relevant. that would be huge for them.
Wingers are dirt cheap

Centres like Lindholm and Henrique cost you 1st round pick ++

There's no reason not to sign him, especially if they don't move for anyone else. We need a top 6 forward and he is as close as we might get.

I don't get this obsession with Kessel. He isn't remotely a top six forward. There's a reason literally nobody signed him yet. He can't play those kinds of minutes anymore. Vegas scratched him for the rest of their cup run after what, four games?

Sign him, sure. But it's for the vibes and nothing else.
