He was waived by Carolina and bounced around. He had a coach who believed in him and went out of his way to give him these opportunities to flourish. As opposed to going through our hellscape of a development system playing for Cull or Green or whoever. It wouldn't have happened here for him.

What I do get mad about though is that Clendening is who they targeted. Awful move
Every team has a skeleton like this in there closet no need to lament over it.

But ya Clendening...yikes.

They probably didn’t get a 1st so no not correct.

They got a big pile of quantity with no quality.

The prospect TB got back for Duclair is better than anyone Pittsburgh got here.
Reminds me of the Hossa (which included Dupuis) trade where Atlanta got completely bent over.

Erik Christensen
Angelo Esposito
Colby Armstrong
2008 1st round pick

Always should go for quality over quantity.

Drance is correct, it is the largest package for a rental, just probably not the best.

This generation of Pens’ fans just got their Beech, Sivek and Lupashuk trade.

Going through the tweets, Drance's equivalent for us would be:

Garland, Pettersson, Raty, 1st 2025 and a 5th. Thinks we'd still have to add another prospect.

Zucker and Dumba with retention for Mikheyev, Raty, and a pick
The more I think about this the more likely it seems, in addition to, or especially as a backup plan if Toffoli is too expensive.

If we can lose mik, add a ufa winger upgrade and depth tough d like dumba, that's really solid.
Add kessel and Joshua coming back and Forwards stack up or exceed almost any other team.

Add Toffoli and/or greenway on top of that and its a top 3 roster in the nhl, currently a top two team, and SC favorite.

Drance is out on a limb here. His colleagues at The Athletic are rating this as a loss for the Penguins.

Seems like the Pens prioritized players close to the NHL. All three players should be in the NHL in the next year or two if they’re going to make it. One is about to lead a pretty good NCAA team in scoring for the second straight year in his D+2, one just blew up in Finland in his D+2, and one has been a ~0.7 PPG player as a D+2/D+3 in the AHL. All have the type of post-draft profiles that seem like they are tracking well but unlikely to be impact players.

Can see why they’d go down that road given their roster, but it seems to me picks may have been better value as currency for the offseason. Guess we’ll see how it will work out.

Drance doesn’t know a thing about prospects. Not a clue.

Pettersson and Raty are both better prospects than any prospect in this deal.

Also they got a 2nd that only turns into a 1st if Carolina wins the Cup. It’s weird it’s being reported as a 1st - when we traded Jannik Hansen and got a conditional 4th that turned into a 1st if SJ won the Cup it wasn’t reported as a 1st.

Drance is overrating Bunting and underrating Garland here.

And also this.
