Cousins was fine option last year because they didn't have a lot of offensive depth. Now our top-9 is stacked, we have 9 players who are at least third-line level or better. That Cousins-Bennett-Tkachuk line never had amazing underlying stats, and it's clear that Cousins doesn't have great finishing skills despite 2 goals against NJ with struggling goaltending. They are good at irritating opponent, but honestly, the most irritating thing in hockey is scoring clutch goals.
Team will not benefit as much from Rodrigues or even Luostarinen on 4th line as by replacing Cousins with somebody more talented who fits there.

The good news is none of the east teams loaded up. Colorado definitely improved a lot, as did Vegas. Wasn't too mad at them being over the cap last year as it was due to Quick who was a non-factor but this year it's pretty glaring. Flyers have decided to punt and Lou said he's going for playoffs so it looks like NYI might catch them. Florida-NYI would be so boring and Sorokin can definitely steal a few games.

How the f*** are we in on Guentzel? We'd have to give up an actual real player for that. I'm sorry, but I'm not trading RFA Lundell for UFA Guentzel. Call me an idiot, but whatever.

We should get Patches and Dumba. Vegas is loading up, you know Rangers, Leafs and Bruins are gonna make other moves too. Even if these guys are just injury insurance, that could make or break a series.

No way Zito goes after Patches now that we landed Tarasenko for free.
Maybe a surprise defenseman… But even that I’m not sure… Would have to be Mahura + good prospect vs under-the-radar right-handed D…
Patches makes no sense, even at 35, he always felt the need to be a chef and we need cooks on the 4th-line… Adding Patches means scratching Cousins or Lomberg and losing Lorentz or Gadjovich for free… Not how we operate !
Patches isn’t a need anymore, if he ever was, so he won’t be a target.

Guentzel is definitely in a much higher tier than either of those guys, though.

I know, I'm just saying ....I get the whole we don't need more chefs in the kitchen thing and we'd have to waive Gadjo or Lorentz, but Vegas has a lot of chefs too. Their whole blue line is chefs. Depth never hurts. We will need everything in our power to beat Vegas, or Dallas or whoever.

Guentzel isn’t adding a name for a name… It’s basically our 2nd or 3rd best winger when we already have Tkachuk, Reinhart, Verhaeghe… It’s a BIG addition, with potential long-term implications. Zito has proved he will ALWAYS be in on the big players… And if his pro-scout crew is really that high on Guentzel, I’ll accept it.
But he won’t be adding a 35 year-old with two horrible injuries washed scorer just to be put on the 4th line, after adding another old vet on the wing with better resume and bad injuries too… Maybe he will beef up that 4th line to go along with Stenlund, but I don’t see them nor do I want them to scratch Cousins or Lomberg during the playoffs !
If we lose, I’ll say we have to be better.

I think you would be potentially messing too much with chemistry bringing Guenztel in. Now you would have to drop a regular like Lombo out of the lineup. Bringing in two big name veteran guys into the locker room... seems risky.
