being big isnt enough, and subban has never EVER been overly physical in front of the net. Neither has beaulieu or markov. could they do it ? sure. but I remember monsters like AHL-level pageau riding the blue with impunity.
I'm not talking about enforcer. I'm talking about a guy who will lay the lumber into the back of a guy and forcibly move him from the top of the crease. to disincentivize guys from standing 6 inches from our goalie. We have ( sans tinordi) NO ONE who does this.
Price does it himself
Regardless, we still have the best goals against totals in the league.
Nothing is going to stop a Kreider from going feet first into the goalie.
I'd love to have a big scary guy like Tinner to push people around but he's not good enough at the moment.
Those big defensemen are getting more and more scarce because it's all about speed now.
When I watch the leafs and see Phaneuf clearing the front of the net (the one thing he is considered good at), 90% of the time all he's doing is providing an additional screen and often taking penalties.
The game has changed a lot and that is why we see so few stay at home guys left. Their is simply no benefit to having a guy who is only good at one thing when you can have a guy that is good at everything.
Look at the best defensemen in the league and you'll notice that they are all good puck movers.
