Doubt Carolina was forcing an extension given that the player they're trading was going to leave as a UFA anyway

They aren't getting a guarantee for a rental. They wanted a win-now player and had to give up on it because they had no leverage.

They'd have been better off trying to re-sign Marner than Stankoven and 2 late 1st's. They did not want Marner extended. They did not even have the opportunity to talk to Marner because he said no to the possibility of going there. Friedman reported that Carolina was the one who wanted Marner.

Looking forward to the off-season, the only real competition will be for the 3RD spot. Also nice that there’s depth signed for +2/3 years on the cheap (Myers/Benoit/Rifai and one more year with Benning in a pinch).

I’d love Dante Fabbro in that slot, though it’s hard to guess what the market would offer him. Or maybe Topi has a big summer.

I doubt the Leafs had any serious talks about moving Marner. It would probably off the top would he waive to go to Carolina and Trev was doing his due diligence.

It's pretty weak if so. I mean he's a pending UFA on a team that he has struggled to lead in the playoffs. Trev is just being thorough. If the GM exploring all avenues to improve the team offends him, yikes.

problem is I doubt were going to name Matthews Captain and then 300 or so days later trade him away, out of the core 4 he's likely to have the lowest chance of being moved unless he asks to be.

They play in Raleigh Durham NC. It’s not as nice as Nashville, Tampa or Dallas but it’s OK. A little too basketball heavy but other than that it’s good place to live.

I think Rielly will be willing to waive, as will Matthews. Willy is the only one that i see not willing especially if they’re going into rebuild mode.
