If they do buy him out, then they basically bought a 4th round pick and conditional 7th round pick for ~2M over each of the next two seasons, no?

It's not that strange that Avs haven't managed to get a pick. This team never has been focused on acquiring picks. Always prefer gambling on players who haven't panned out elsewhere instead.

Look at it this way. From 2008 to this year, when the team should have been rebuilding this is the average number of picks:

1st round picks: 0.9/year
2nd round picks: 1.1/year
3rd round picks: 0.7/year
4th round picks: 1/year
5th round picks: 1/year
6th round picks: 1/year
7th round picks: 1/year

This team has gone through a ten year rebuild/slump without accumulating any picks, instead spending them on things like Berra, Stuart, Boedker.
