Second and a third is pretty decent value, I figured the third condition was if they don't make playoffs it becomes a 4-5th rounder.
Hmm.. Not sure if the Jagr trade helps us or not. He was a rental that got a good return.
Wow
If Horton indeed never plays again, this is actually . . . kind of fair.
Does Columbus get any sort of compensation?
Not having to pay Horton's salary when he won't likely ever play again is a form of compensation. Insurance only covers a part of a players salary, and that only if the team elects to have them insured. Horton might have been too costly to insure.
Blue Jackets get a player that will actually dress for them while the Leafs get out of Clarkson's bad contract. Horton can be placed on LTIR if the Leafs ever need the cap space.
That's a good point too. That makes sense. And if the leafs are going full rebuild ,they could just elect not to put him on LTIR . Making it easier to get to the cap floor.
Unreal. pants-on-head stupid move for Columbus. Horton may have been getting paid to sit in the stands but that salary didn't count against the cap. This contract will hinder Columbus' ability to add pieces in the long term should they become a playoff team. Can't believe Toronto was able to unload that horrific contract.

This move may help Columbus today, and maybe even for next year but that anchor of a contract is going to hinder them down the road, guaranteed.
Columbus's reason is they're paying regardless might as well get someone who's producing something. Without giving up assets.
Actual money matters. Not every owner can afford to or is willing to pay a player 5.3M+ to sit in the stands and never play again.
Anyway, here's how the NHL handles insurance for all those wondering.
Sure, money matters to the owners. That's why this deal happened. This deal is going to gravely affect the on ice product in Columbus should they have playoff aspirations in the next 4 seasons.
I'm just wondering what Nonis next magic trick is going to be. I'm going to go ahead and give the Wiser nod.
Only if they were ever going to spend to the cap, and going by their history, that's highly unlikely. They're a budget team that's spent well below the cap in each season aside from 2013.
If they kept Horton, nothing would have changed, other than they'd be getting a whole lot less from their 5.3M investment.
