Second and a third is pretty decent value, I figured the third condition was if they don't make playoffs it becomes a 4-5th rounder.

Does Columbus get any sort of compensation?

Not having to pay Horton's salary when he won't likely ever play again is a form of compensation. Insurance only covers a part of a players salary, and that only if the team elects to have them insured. Horton might have been too costly to insure.

Blue Jackets get a player that will actually dress for them while the Leafs get out of Clarkson's bad contract. Horton can be placed on LTIR if the Leafs ever need the cap space.

That makes sense. And if the leafs are going full rebuild ,they could just elect not to put him on LTIR . Making it easier to get to the cap floor.

Unreal. pants-on-head stupid move for Columbus. Horton may have been getting paid to sit in the stands but that salary didn't count against the cap. This contract will hinder Columbus' ability to add pieces in the long term should they become a playoff team. Can't believe Toronto was able to unload that horrific contract.

This move may help Columbus today, and maybe even for next year but that anchor of a contract is going to hinder them down the road, guaranteed.

Columbus's reason is they're paying regardless might as well get someone who's producing something. Without giving up assets.

Actual money matters. Not every owner can afford to or is willing to pay a player 5.3M+ to sit in the stands and never play again.

Anyway, here's how the NHL handles insurance for all those wondering.

In theory sure sounds great problem is

1) Clarkson is a glorified 4th line roll player, and his cap hit will be now on the books for the next 4 seasons. Would not at all be surprised to see him ending that contract in the AHL.

2) That cap money could have been used on adding a player who is actually useful instead. Horton's contract didn't count against the cap.

This is an example of ownership not wanting to pay to have the player sit on the bench. Simple as that, it was a financial move for ownership at the cost of extremely valuable cap space.

Sure, money matters to the owners. That's why this deal happened. This deal is going to gravely affect the on ice product in Columbus should they have playoff aspirations in the next 4 seasons.

Only if they were ever going to spend to the cap, and going by their history, that's highly unlikely. They're a budget team that's spent well below the cap in each season aside from 2013.

If they kept Horton, nothing would have changed, other than they'd be getting a whole lot less from their 5.3M investment.

They also can actually buy out Clarkson during the deal if they need to. They couldn't with Horton.

Also a bit surprised they didn't swing this with LA for Richards, since Richards is far better than Clarkson

True, if they are a budget team this may help them in some capacity then. However, Clarkson isn't just a huge contract. He is also not a very good hockey player.

Flames and coyotes are definitley talking something. Both teams have been watching the other a ton lately. No way this includes glencross. I could see us swapping a forward prospect with them for a D (ie Baertchi for Gormley) I could however also see a Stajan deal. I have read quotes both on mynhltraderumors that the coyotes are interested in acquiring centres with term and another quote from I believe kypreos that said he has heard the flames would like to shed Raymond and Stajan's contract. Not sure who the flames would get back from AZ for Stajan but I am just throwing ideas out there
