Very few players are incapable of being good defensively. Sure, there’s some vision and instinct that goes into being really good defensively, but a lot of it is just effort and a little bit of care. The guys that are bad generally chose it.
Max Domi
And to a lighter degree Morgan Reilly. Just close to zero for defensive intelligence.

Said it once and I will say it again, I would really prefer to get ahead of this now with Matthews. You have more value this summer with 2 full seasons at 50% retained.

If we had a bad start like 20 games in, you already know he's out and it would be TDL-off-season range but teams have cap now and everyone and their mother is looking for a centre so just do it now.

Read the whole Tweet for greatest context, it's a clique.

Matthew’s to Philly and have Philly include our 2027 1st as part of the package.
Then we can retool/rebuild without pressure next season.

I think so, with the wright mentor such as Tavares. I don’t think Seattle is going a very good job developing their players, especially him. I watched him in Juniors, and he doesn’t have any particularly great standout skills, but he’s just effective. He's got better than average skating, defensively fairly decent, and pretty good hockey IQ. I think he's a 50-60 point guy, if put in the right situation.

Our challenge being.. we don't have the legitimate top six threat they are looking for....(edit - That we'd be willing to part with... ie. Nylander or Knies)
Fun fact.
Shane played aaa rep hockey in Burlington. He is a 2004 birth year.
My son was Burlington aaa rep 2002

As a 7 year old the rep kids played with a light puck blue in colour so some kids could raise it.
Shane was called up lots as a 7-8-9-10 year old to practice and play on my son’s team and he is roofing the heavy black puck from day one.

Had a focus that stood out clearly from others.
Saw the ice and could skate like crazy from the start.

I have followed him closely and after his draft disappointment, I thought going to a Ron Francis run team would be the best for him long term.
Seattle just hasn’t gotten the development part correct with any of their players.
He is a massive buy low candidate that would love playing in Toronto.

I still think there is a first line center in there more in the Staal mode.

So based on who is under contract or RFA status right now the depth chart is roughly like this. Keep in mind some players can play both left and right side.

Centre is horrendously thin so we can expect a move there. Certainly would invest in a 3C that can produce offense and play a quality defensive game. Can could put Quillan in a successful spot on the 4th line. Sign some vet depth for competition.

Adding speed and grit on the right wing would be helpful.

Obviously rebuilding the blue line by trading Rielly and Carlo can help.

Centre:
- Matthews
- Tavares
- Quillan

LW
- Knies
- Cowan
- McKenna*
- Robertson (RFA)
- Joshua
- Lorentz

RW
- Nylander
- Maccelli (RFA)
- Cowan
- Joshua
- Lorentz
- Tverberg

LD
- Rielly
- McCabe
- OEL
- Benoit
- Chadwick

RD
- Tanev
- OEL
- Carlo
- Myers
- Villeneuve
- Danford

If you could end up for a forward group like:

Knies-Matthews-Kane
McKenna-Tavares-Nylander
Cowan-Hayton*-Tolvanen
Lorenz-Quillan-Joshua

That’s not bad. Hayton is one example of the kind of centre I’d pursue. Not the only option.

I want McTavish and Zellwegger.
I think Toronto could get Zellweger and a prospect for Carlo if their two righties walk ( Carlson / Trouba ). But I agree they could use his puck moving . I’d be very interested if Mintyukov was made available for some reason ( wants too much cash idk ) .

I think they both will walk and I think Carlo would make a good fit there for sure. Dunno if it would be Zell + or just Zell but either way seems ok

Rielly, Carlo, Robertson and Maccelli are probably my top trade targets this offseason

I like Robertson but with Knies, Cowan and likely McKenna he might get squeezed out. That said if he can play the right side that’s not bad

I'm pretty sure he hasn't backed off his trade request. At this point I'd trade Robertson for an RFA in his situation or a pick

He's not good enough to be a pain in the ass
