GDT: Trade and Free agent Rumours thread | Chayka off-season edition

  • If you are having issues logging in, we have found opening the log in page in a new tab/window rather than using the pop out should resolve these issues. We are working to get this resolved and thank you for patience.
  • Due to the increased volume of league transactions, the Trade Rumors and Free Agent Talk section is temporarily restricted to where threads may only be started by moderators and sponsors. We anticipate that this restriction will be lifted some time after the first round of the draft.

Not trying to be ominous, but we're like what - a month out from all the talk being about Auston wanting to leave? I wouldn't assume the Leafs are immune to the trend...but maybe they are. I dunno.

Matthews will likely only be traded if he wants out, so I would think your prediction is a pretty safe one.
Haha, covering both sides of the coin

In reality, I think Matthews wants to be here and is not like those other American players (ie Tkachuks). The guy seems to have some actual integrity

I do want Trocheck unless the cost is absurd.
But I’d part with our 2027 Avs 1st + a B prospect for sure. I think he’s a great fit and good vet

They rejected a pretty big deal for him at the deadline. I forget what it was but it was better than that.

But it also depends where Trocheck wants to go. He has trade protection.

I saw some insider/outsider(lol) say recently that NYR will regret not accepting that deal and Tro’s value is less now. I wouldn’t be surprised with a C like Larkin available.

the original story from Johnston was fabricated, so there has never actually been a "Matthews might want out" story.

We asked for Frondell and 4 from Chicago so...

I'd want more from a divisional rival, I also don't think Buffalo has anyone realistically as interesting as Frondell FWIW.

There's also the Reid to Vancouver rumors....at that point it becomes Carels or Bjorck....both of which I'm far less intrigued by than Reid.

I like Jenner but his potential contract terrifies me.
He is probably the best FA C on the market and nearly everyone wants one and have tons of space.
Add to that he has a ton of miles on his body and probably should be a winger going forward
The term is always the killer on a bunch of these deals. If he agreed to 3-4 years with how the cap is rapidly rising, I do it.

It is unclear if the Red Wings have an appetite to explore a trade involving DeBrincat, at this stage, but citing multiple league sources, TFP’s David Pagnotta reports teams have reached out.

DeBrincat owns a 16-team no-trade list as part of his contract
and does have some control in where he ends up, if dealt.

The Edmonton Oilers, Chicago Blackhawks, Toronto Maple Leafs, New Jersey Devils, Seattle Kraken and Buffalo Sabres are some of the teams exploring the market for a top-line, scoring winger and could have interest in DeBrincat.

DeBrincat scored 41 goals and added a career-high 44 assists for a career-high 85 points in 82 games with the Red Wings this past season.

Rielly has waived his NTC and is actively working with management to find him a new team. Now our GM is in the media saying he'll probably be here next year and the fanbase is discussing how it's a good thing because we should protect asset value.

This is a golden opportunity to move on from a core player. Don't mistake me, I want Matthews and Nylander gone too, but they're nailed down and I can't reasonably expect it. But Rielly is right there, primed to leave, and I can already see how this progresses to him being a Leaf next year and we go into year 11 with the same leadership group.

It's not even the draft, after year 10. I am deeply impatient because I am desperate for trades that indicate accountability will enter our club, and I already see the same old "patience" rhetoric that will inevitably have 44 on our blueline next year. I beg for a GM who is decisive. Carpe Diem, take the third round pick for Rielly or whatever and tell the league (and pending UFA class) that we're serious about moving on from the 18 wheeler season last year that nobody around here seems to remember.
Technically he hasn't waived -- he only gave the Leafs a list of teams he would consider. For all we know the Leafs had a deal and he said no.

If this is true, San Jose should ask for all four picks and more.
Let’s see who’s put on waivers and whether having cap room to pick up them up makes sense, and although cap space won’t get you 50 goals neither will Mo. I’d rather have the “useless” cap space than the useless player.
I can't see that being an issue. It's almost always low salary guys who get put on waivers.

He is definitely a guy I’d be more worried about term than cap hit for. Even then I’d still worry what the number is.
Not at all saying I wouldn’t want him, just that o think he is one of the guys that is going to get overpaid July 1st

So with the rumors Knies and Rielly aren't going anywhere. They still need another 2nd or 3rd line center and a 2nd line RW. Better get to it.
I think that one of those two pieces (likely the center) comes back either in the Carlo trade, or with assets accumulated from that trade. Still looking at a Barrett Hayton type add to bring some youth at center to the organization. The 2RW probably ends uo being a "stop gap" player at that spot in 2026. I think Chayka's primary focus this off season is...

1. Drafting McKenna and adding a high impact prospect to the organization. Essentially accomplished (24 hours away).

2. Add 3 new defenders to the d-core, with emphasis on moving the puck, playing a possession game and adding some scoring the the back end. He's added 2 of those 3 thus far in Raddysh and Andrae.

3. Adding a middle 6 center, ideally with some youth. Yet to be accomplished.

4. Solving the goalie situation and deciding which 3 he's going to roll with. Yet to be accomplished.

5. Adding some skating and scoring depth to the bottom six. Yet to be accomplished.

6. Adding a top 6 RW. I suspect Cowan or a veteran on a shirt term contract will fill this roll in 2026. Yet to be accomplished.
