Now that things have kind of unfolded the way they have, we need to get Werenski. This is essentially the Brian Leetch 2.0 trade. This kind of opportunity comes around once every 20 years.

This would be much, much bigger than acquiring Brian Leetch.

If the Maple Leafs add Werenski, he instantly becomes the best defenseman to ever play for the Maple Leafs.

I don’t think Chayka was trying to trade Knies at all.
His name ended up in rumours because it came out Tre almost traded him. Chayka did what he should have done when teams called after that, set an extremely high price to see if anyone would bite.
Now one of the best Dmen in the world is available and is willing to come here. It’s not that he wants to or is looking to trade this player. It’s just a situation where you have to consider it.

Matthews last contract played out similar, they went to him before he could even extend and knew he was staying.

He isn't leaving when you get his best friend and immediately become the #1 spot if McDavid hits FA

I sure hope Leafs are not dangling 29 1st rounder.

Quite frankly I wanna see how Matthews performs this upcoming season before even trying to extend him. I LOVE Matthews but gotta be strategic here

Would be amazing to get a young forward back in Bourque or Sillinger/Johnson too, but the cost will be a ton.

That's an interesting proposal. Dallas is in a tough spot with Robertson and Bourque, If the Leafs took some salary back, it might make Dallas more likely to pull the trigger Dallsas has 9.3 mil in Cap space, Robertson will be somewhere around 15m and Bourque will be somewhere around 5m

Harley out is 10.6m minus + Knies 7.5m in - net difference around 3 mil, we could add Cowen in the deal and sacrifice our cap to take Wyatt Johnson's $8.4 mil because we are nice guys ...

Dallas has a tough choice no matter what they do.

I think he tried to trade him for the #4OA or #7OA picks plus a bluechip prospect. Speculation is Hawks would not bite when the Leafs asked for #4OA and Frondell (#3OA in 2025).

I dont hate that D - Rielly would get much easier match ups - the guy would still play like a winger but would be able to pick apart 3rd and 4th line plugs.

It also hurts a bidding war if Werenski refuses to sign a new deal with Tampa or Minny.
