GDT: Trade and Free agent Rumours thread | Chayka off-season edition

  • If you are having issues logging in, we have found opening the log in page in a new tab/window rather than using the pop out should resolve these issues. We are working to get this resolved and thank you for patience.
  • Due to the increased volume of league transactions, the Trade Rumors and Free Agent Talk section is temporarily restricted to where threads may only be started by moderators and sponsors. We anticipate that this restriction will be lifted some time after the first round of the draft.
So let me get this straight:

We luck into the 1st overall.
We make a good pickup in Raddysh, a player who only had eyes on us.
We probably don't move Rielly because we can't get enough for him.
We are looking at moving the one player that we 100% shouldn't in Knies.

We're really going to get lucky twice, punt an a Rielly trade, piss off our budding star PWF, put Domi on LTIR and call it an offseason?

Did we already forget the 18-wheeler that was the last season? Heads should be ROLLING, especially inside the dressing room after 10 years of this shit. Instead, we're going to count our two lucky stars, promote some Marlies, and call it a day. This team is a soap opera, not a professional sports organization.

Or we could use Bo Groulx and Jacob Quillan for like 1/4 the price
Honestly, we have a Marlies team that just won the Calder Cup, but we are talking about making trades for 4th line names without giving any of these guys a chance.

What’s the point of the Marlies then, and what more do these guys have to do to get a sniff here?

Is the sole purpose to draft and lose them for nothing and watch other teams benefit?

If he's not on the top PP, he bleeds goals against at 5v5, Andrae is going on 3rd pair LD and he cannot PK

What are we doing???

If we rewind to Sheldon Keefe's last year here....

Morgan Rielly was a +8 at even strength; putting up 32 even strength points; getting a point on roughly 1/3 of the 91 goals scored when we was on the ice.

He was good (+4), roughly 50% shot share and corsi share in 800 minutes with TJ Brodie.

He was excellent (+4), roughly 57% shot share and 50% corsi in 84 minutes with Jake McCabe.

He was shockingly productive (+5), 62% shot share and 52% corsi in 53 minutes with William Lagesson.

He was generally poor with Liljegren & Benoit.

It's a puzzling wish list from Buffalo. You've got Reid and Mrtka... both RHD.... and yet, we just signed Raddysh to be our top RHD, and have Danford coming. If we have a need going forward, it's LHD, not RHD, and we certainly don't really need two RHD prospects. Our LHD prospects/young players is pretty non-existent, unless you could Andrae.... I like Chadfield, but he's probably not going to be more than a bottom pairing guy.

Plus this trade makes us WORSE, immediately. We aren't going to make a more, that makes us worse tomorrow, than we were today. McLeod is a decent 2C, no question there, but overall I think Knies is better.

If we are moving Knies, then it's Power you want. He'd easily be on our top pairing, good defensive LHD, would make a very good top pairing with Raddysh. Power + 4th is probably an overpay from Buffalo, but I'm not in the charity business.

It also frees you up, to pick the best player available at #4 OA, whether that is Reid, Carels, Malhotra, or Bjork. There is a good argument for each of those players.
Power had an excellent playoff but my Sabre buddies would drive him out of town. Big guy,, soft as butter.
Not great offensively or defensively.

Looks great in a uniform.

Be funny for Chayka to say that about Rielly earlier only to deal him tonight

A trade would likely happen at the draft tomorrow or Saturday

If we see any moves it might be Carlo in the next 24 hrs
I think it's greater than 50/50 that it does happen. Chayka has not given the Media a sniff of anything he is doing suddenly tells them he is keeping Rielly and the Coach has already met with the player is all for the benefit of the GM's who are inquiring about Rielly. Step up your game.

Look no further than Chaykas comments about Berube since Chayka was hired all the way to firing Berube.

Inbetween those moments, guys like Dreger and Mirtle and Siegel and CJ were adamant the Leafs might or even LIKELY would be keeping Berube.

Rielly has waived his NTC and is actively working with management to find him a new team. Now our GM is in the media saying he'll probably be here next year and the fanbase is discussing how it's a good thing because we should protect asset value.

This is a golden opportunity to move on from a core player. Don't mistake me, I want Matthews and Nylander gone too, but they're nailed down and I can't reasonably expect it. But Rielly is right there, primed to leave, and I can already see how this progresses to him being a Leaf next year and we go into year 11 with the same leadership group.

It's not even the draft, after year 10. I am deeply impatient because I am desperate for trades that indicate accountability will enter our club, and I already see the same old "patience" rhetoric that will inevitably have 44 on our blueline next year. I beg for a GM who is decisive. Carpe Diem, take the third round pick for Rielly or whatever and tell the league (and pending UFA class) that we're serious about moving on from the 18 wheeler season last year that nobody around here seems to remember.

That system was probably more friendly for him

He was 30 years old though too, age gets everyone.

I still highly doubt Knies gets moved, it just doesn't make sense unless the overpay is massive, especially if it's an in division trade to somewhere like Buffalo.

If Reid is off the table, to me I'm probably going Bjorck in that scenario, Carels would be the other player....but I really wouldn't be overly excited about trading 23 year old Matthew Knies 1 for 1 for either of those guys quite honestly.

It would need to be Reid + for me.

If they don't get a deal they like.....so be it. You don't get better by giving players away
My entire schtick around here is that we get better by introducing accountability to the club. Especially after the 18 wheeler season we just had. We don't get better by keeping the same players around for year 11 of this era either. Keeping players just for the sake of it is soft, indecisive, and is a huge part of why our team's culture is a country club. Screw the 2nd round pick or whatever we're holding out for in a Rielly trade, the leadership group of the last 10 years is a millstone hanging around this team's neck and we are absolutely better by moving on from as many of them as possible, as soon as possible.

Some middle 6/bottom 6 forwards who are right-handed and I think can be of Target for Chayka:

Drew O'Connor
Ryan Hartman
Keegan Kolesar

Carlo and Knies for 4, Helenius and Mrtka/Strbak

I'm in the same boat, no desire to trade Knies unless an overpayment is apart of the deal.
