GDT: Trade and Free agent Rumours thread | Chayka off-season edition

  • If you are having issues logging in, we have found opening the log in page in a new tab/window rather than using the pop out should resolve these issues. We are working to get this resolved and thank you for patience.
  • Due to the increased volume of league transactions, the Trade Rumors and Free Agent Talk section is temporarily restricted to where threads may only be started by moderators and sponsors. We anticipate that this restriction will be lifted some time after the first round of the draft.
San Jose said they have one really interesting offer for 2nd overall.

Wonder if its Knies for #2 + M.Ferraro rights. Hopefully another add.

I know a #2 pick is alot but if Byram with 1 year left and wanting 12 million +, I would think Knies at 7.75 million long term should get more.

Mckenna + Reid would be fantastic to add to Cowan, A.A, Hildeby, Danford.

Only downside is it will likely end up in a better pick given to Philly and Boston.

Last I checked it’s only June 25th
On the one hand, you're right. On the other, here's how these things actually go (source, 10 years of this era)

"We're looking at moves, but this is probably one for draft day"
"The trade at the draft didn't materialize, we're going to look at how the first days of UFA shake out"
"Our trading partners filled their needs via UFA, so the deal wasn't there"
"We want to see how the player looks at training camp"
"If we move the player, it will be a deadline deal"
Repeat

Our management is incapable of being decisive when it comes to the big names. I wish I could take comfort in the fact that it's June, but with Chayka talking about about how we're probably going to have Rielly on the blueline next year, I'll believe in changes when I see them. Shuffling some Marlies from this point forward is not enough of a change from last year.

There are no current available players that we don’t have the cap space for. Probably not even any combination of 2.
Rielly’s cap hit isn’t stopping this team from doing anything.
I can see many reasons to trade Rielly even if I don’t agree with all of them. But his cap hit isn’t one of them
what's "current available" have to do with it?

Be funny for Chayka to say that about Rielly earlier only to deal him tonight

A trade would likely happen at the draft tomorrow or Saturday

If we see any moves it might be Carlo in the next 24 hrs

Those wanting to keep him will realize by US Thanksgiving that it was a bad idea.
I don't think anyone wants to keep him. I think posters just don't want to give him away.

There is a difference, and when teams see how much shitty D get on July 1st, it's almost a guarantee they will circle back to Rielly.

Who is left for us to acquire now?

Trade targets:

Pettersson
Hayton
Bourque
Trocheck
Hellyubuck
Zellweger

UFA:

Carlson
Trouba
Shea
Ferraro
Jenner
Marchment
Bobrosvsky

Names gone which we were looking at

Tuch
Nemec
Nickushkin
Byram
Marchment makes sense if we move a LW. Gonna be a team full of lefties otherwise.

I think you will end up being way off base. There will be a lot of additional changes coming.
I'd love for that to be the case. But I am absolutely fuming that we're backing down from a Rielly trade and Knies is burning a hole in Chayka's pocket. The annual shuffling of our bottom pair and bottom six wingers barely registers as "changes" at this point.

I think the play is adding Carlo to Knies. All of these teams need RD.
SJ
Buffalo
Montreal

I understand the whole "Don't trade Reilly for the sake of trading Reilly" angle....I would still be extremely disappointed if we don't move him

He has regressed significantly on the defensive end (he was never great to begin with) and has gotten softer over time.

It's time to trade him. I'd trade for a low-ish value return. I just think we need more of a different look back there
It’s not so much an angle, as the right thing to do for the organization.

Morgan Rielly holds value, and the only reason to move him is if we can extract roughly that value. His cap hit is not a hindrance to the level some would suggest. If teams won’t pay for him, we can look at it again at the deadline. Or even after UFAs sign and everyone sees that 7ish is now mid pair value on contracts.

I have no issues with a “it’s time to part ways”, but the idea of us retaining to do it, or the idea of just taking anything is foolish. A 2nd along with a decent prospect should be the least we accept.

His regression is usage, and partner related, not that he isn’t responsible at all for his disappointing play.

Lol I get the impatience and frustrations but whatever the GM says right now and what happens between now and the start of the season is a long process with somany different avenues that can happen. Knies was always unlikely to be traded anyway but some seem convinced he will be.

If October rolls by and nothing else has really happened, then everyone will share your feelings. But come on... it's not even draft day.

We aren’t (not shopping Rielly), learn GM speak.

We badly need some right-handed forwards. I don't see many being available in free agency but we clearly are heavily lopsided

Ryan Hartman would be a trade target of mine

several have said they want to keep him with a change of coach and system magically making him the Mo of four years ago, that ain't happening and I'm less concerned with what we get back in any deal than I am of him playing D here next season.

If we do Knies+ Carlo for Power + 4th OA

Then deal McCabe ir OEL for best 2C package you can get

Run

Power - Raddysh
Rielly - Trouba (8M x 4)
Mccabe/OEL - Tanev

Tanev and Rielly get replaced within 2 years by
4th OA - 1 of Smits/Reid/Carels
Danford

I am largely reacting in frustration to the complete silence in regards to what last season actually was. It was a disaster where the team quit on themselves and their coach during a playoff race. Winning the 1st overall pick was a nueralyzer from Men In Black and everyone instantly forgot what a disaster we just witnessed. I'm telling you now that nobody is going to share my feelings in October because we're going to be chattering about McKenna, Raddysh, our young goalies and excited to see the next season. Everyone has forgotten, and accountability, the thing that I desire most for our country club of a franchise, is just another word on the wind. Indecision into patience into the deal wasn't there into "we're rolling it back" is the way this works and I have 10 years of evidence to that point. Chayka is more than welcome to surprise and delight me, but I'm calling my shot now.

Relax. Rielly will 100% be traded, and knies will be the opposite. The leafs will acquire a number one goalie (don't believe that nonsense about Stolarz for a second), another top 2/top 4 defenseman, and another scoring winger. The bottom 6 will be the easiest piece. I could easily see them giving a silly contract to Greer.

We will 100% share those types of feelings if the Leafs walk into next season with the same team but with Raddysh and McKenna. Full stop. Chayka admitted today they have big holes to fill and have a lot more work to do. Take that as you will.

Call your shot, do your thing but don't act surprised and up in arms surprised when people tell you it's June 25th. Let's at least be somewhat positive to what can happen and criticize actual facts when they happen (or don't happen). Treliving f***ing sucked.
