Look up all Chara, Marleau and Thornton have done. And tell me that man is not the gemiest of gems.

Plus we need D not forwards, he would already be better positioned to succeed on a good leash than the others.
Why do you think we need D? The defense was very solid last year and overall the team was giving up less chances. Our issue was scoring. We've lost our depth scoring with the losses of Kadri, Kapanen and Johnsson from the 3rd line.

Kadri, Kapanen and Johnsson have been gone for years my dude. And depth scoring becomes a meaningless argument when in the playoffs our depth scoring (Kerfoot) produced more than Matthew's and Galchenyuk had the same amount of points in one less game than Marner did.

Everything we do is meaningless if the big boys don't show up to play, as much as I'd love to improve every part of the team I'd rather shore up the D than get more scoring depth in hope the D helps us against getting scored on and the boys finally show up to play.

Bogosian is gone so already we don't have the same back end as we did last year and Chara can be that mean mugging low minute utilized in certain positions player.

Mikheyev hurt his wrist so I'm REALLY hoping this offseason some rehab will have him back to contributing offensively a bit because other than that his game is solid, we already signed Bunting who i think will surprise many people and Ritchie, and Kase, we signed our depth forwards.

We need D.

My thoughts anyways.

“Nothing to this point,” Dubas said, referring to talking to Rielly about a new contract. “Our focus has been on the expansion draft and the draft itself and on free agency.
“Once we see what the market bears, we’ll have a better sample size to open discussions with Morgan.”

Busy Leafs GM Dubas will get around to talking contract extension with Rielly | Toronto Sun

Don't get the waiting thing.... at all

Expansion draft and 3 picks at the draft should take an hour, and he doesn't have time to deal with his #1dman. LOL.

Not sure how much gas Chara has left in the tank but he'd be perfect dman for this team if he has some left. Might be able to teach some of our guys how play nasty.

IF you are Reilly, you would wait too, right?

Ok so we have been seeing these contracts that have been handed out around the NHL for dmen. One in particular stands our for me and it should for the Leafs as well. Neil Pionk just signed not too long ago a contract for 4 years at 5.875 million per season. To me this is what Reilly is worth. If he's willing to sign at a discount to stay with the Leafs than that would be a 4 year deal at 5.5 million per season. He isnt worth a penny more look at both of their stat lines the past couple of seasons:

Pionk

2019-20 6goals 39assists 45pts with a plus 10 rating
2020-21 3goals 29assists 32pts with a plus 6 rating

Reilly

2019-20 3goals 24assists 27pts with plus 6 rating
2020-21 5goals 30 assists 35pts with plus 11 rating

Both players play the PP and high end minutes for their offensively gifted teams. Both do not play the PK.

If Reilly is targetting more than what Pionk got he should be dealt immediately. He would fit at that cost with the salary structure of our defense. Both Muzzin and Brodie are in that range and deservedly so.

Pretty misleading. The link goes nowhere and there's no mention of interest. Strome is a solid player and any team should have some form of interest in him. Seems rather dumb for the Hawks to trade him anyway.

Clickbait junk.

Chicago needs to move some cap, and has plenty of strength at C at the moment. Moving the $3 million, for a 2nd rounder, or mid level prospect, would be a win for them right now.

They've got Toews, Johnson, Dach, and young guys Borgstrom, Kurashev and Barratt all at C.

They just want to be rid of the cap space.

We also don't have cap space.

But I believe Chicago is going to dip into LTIR. They don't have to shed ~3M salary as far as I know based on some projections.

You'd have to assume, acquiring Strome, means moving a body out from our roster... so the cap space isn't an issue for us really.

The question being, can Strome be an effective 3C, or can you adjust the lineup to have three decent forward lines?

In this example, Rielly was traded (to NYR for Miller and Schneider). I don't think people would complain about depth after that.

Ritchie Matthews Nylander
Kerfoot Tavares Mikeyev
Roberston Strome Marner

I know you can't always assume fans know what is going on, but if you go through the Chicago sub forum, they already assume he isn't in their roster.

who says he isnt talking to rielly? also, he has already stated that he doesnt want to be in this position again and will move him if rielly isnt re-signed in august.
This is Toronto you really don't think there would be a leak?

Michael Russo thinks Kaprizov will end up signing a 5 year 9ish mil deal wit the wild, but negotiations aren't close to finishing yet.

wow. how is this kid worth 9M+ per year after ONE good season in the NHL? i know the kid is talented but this is insane.

Leave now Dubas .

If he doesn't we will get nothing for our top players when they hit UFA status.
Mathews and Marner
Dubas dont want to pressure them a year earlier we will wait until after the season GONE no assets .

Leave now please.........

Didn't learn anything from the Hyman experience.

I don't have one. I just recall reading it and it's come up here on multiple ocassions

That was kind of my point. The board discussions and various outside "expert" opinions seem to be driven by re-interpreting what Dubas might have meant in that July 24th quote. I have searched for any other Dubas Rielly comments and was unable to find anything first hand. In any case, it was never suggested that he had tried to resign Mo before the other big D contracts so it doesn't really matter who was delaying things. Rielly isn't 27 year old Doughty, or Pietro, or Karlsson so failing to push for an early signing at the best possible terms may never have been a priority. For all we know even $6.5M x 8 is outside of KD's comfort zone because there is just no money. And he is waiting and having dialogue, same as with Hyman but the outcome was pre-determined and he can't start exploring a deal until the other top defensemen are signed and MR becomes the only option for a trading partner.

There isn't a lot of disclosure from this regime so I think we will still be left guessing what was going on behind the scenes however it works out. I am pretty sure if he is moved it won't be because they were 500k apart. Running a big 4 in a flat cap is a house of cards if the GM isn't looking at least two years ahead and I think the club is probably looking at multiple options right now.
