If we can't get either Saad or Ritchie at a low enough deal, I wouldn't be opposed to trading Dermott for a similar caliber forward.

Dermott for Kempe type move. Add picks on either side to even it out.

Why should we do it?
Our left winger depth looks depleted after letting Foligno and Hyman walk. Kempe competes hard, is a good skater and can chip 30-40 points a season. Dermott, could be replaced internally or externally via Fa.

Why should LA?
After acquiring Arvidsson, Danault + resigning Athanasiou and Moore there is place to move on from Kempe. They have many young players ready to be full-time nhlers knocking at the door step, and defence is a bigger need for them. Dermott can slot on their right side and be an upgrade on Maatta.

That's solid value for both teams. I like it

Random evening musings, but I wonder if we'd have interest in a guy like Chara. He could basically play PK and sheltered ES time/late game kills with a young partner. Dermott/Lilj can play right, but wouldn't be ideal for Sandin.

Didn't even notice he was a UFA ... I'm into it.. I think he'd provide a lot of elements needed for a depth defender and provide some leadership in the room. Would be a great mentor for those youngsters.

I thought about Chara a few days back and I've been thinking for years... but can he skate... and he's always so damn effective.

We'll get him then... and he'll turn into a pylon like we all hoped for when he was on the teams we hated.

Then signing a guy like Ryan Murray for the bottom pair. This could make our lineup something like this.

Kempe - Matthews - Marner
Bunting - Tavares - Nylander
Kerfoot - Kampf - Mikheyev
Engvall - Spezza - Simmonds
Extra options - Semyonov, Brooks, Gabriel, Amadio, Joey Anderson, Robertson

Rielly - Brodie
Muzzin - Holl
Sandin - Murray
Mennell

Campbell/Mrazek

Like others have said, it makes some sense. I don't think Kempe has a whole lot of offensive potential though.

I suggested Grundstrom a few months ago from the Kings, but of course Kempe is a much better fit and 1 for 1, the value seems ok for Dermott. I am sure Kings fans probably disagree.

Ex-Leaf Zach Hyman sees a good fit with the Oilers, the city of Edmonton and Connor McDavid, of course | The Star

The Leafs couldn’t match Hyman’s new deal in Edmonton with just $9.3 million in cap space. Toronto added eight players Wednesday, and Dubas will double back on unsigned free agents over the next few days.

There’s a new world waiting for Hyman in Edmonton.

“I had a conversation with (Dubas) to really get a hold of the situation,” he said. “I had to know that I was leaving Toronto, and I was able to make a decision, and Edmonton was always at the forefront."

“There’s a lot of parallels between Edmonton and Toronto ... we had great teams but we didn’t have success. Edmonton is positioned to make a long run at the Cup and that’s everyone’s goal. That’s the reason I chose to come and play here. I believe in this team, I played this team a bunch last year, I believe in the players they have, and I believe I can be a good addition to it.”

Hyman, who had 57 goals in 165 games the last three seasons, is excited at the prospect of playing with McDavid. The two have spoken several times and Hyman has already joined McDavid and Oilers defenceman Darnell Nurse in workouts.

“Those two players, having played against them a lot, you realize how special they are and how they can change a game. Having that opportunity to play with them is another reason I chose Edmonton.”

Hyman said he visited Edmonton with his wife to not only meet Oilers management and tour their facilities but to view potential “neighbourhoods where we could potentially live. We have a seven-month-old son, and it was important for us to see where he could potentially grow up.”

Hyman said he will post a thank you to the Leafs organization and the city after a six-year run.

“I think any time you leave a place you’ve been for a long time, its going to be emotional,” Hyman said. “Not just from a hockey standpoint but from a people standpoint. I made such strong relationships not with just the players but the strength coaches, athletic therapist, the equipment managers — those guys really round out a team. I’m a guy who stays in the city all year long and works out year long, so I felt really strong relationships with those guys."

“So, from a player’s standpoint, you are a family … but change is inevitable. When I say (it has been) an emotional roller coaster, it’s not being able to see those people. But once that kind of sunk in, that I was on the move, it was exciting.”

He is pretty darn close to a pylon today. But he's the biggest pylon around and still brings leadership and physical play. He'd be limited in play but can PK and handle 3rd pair minutes. He'd basically slot in like a Bogo

Good for him on the contract. I really do wish him the best. It's not often I really hope for a Leaf leaving to do well but Hyman is a good guy.

Bozaks not a bad cheap option. You could play him ES with Spezza for some offense and he can spot in to special teams. Just need to view him as a 4C and a cheap one at that

I expect he would produce at least as well as Kerf in the 3c spot and he is a lot better on the FO. I would replace Kerfoot with Boz at c and either deal Kerfoot or move him to full time winger which I believe would increase his offensive production. A winger who can occasionally play c is more valuable than a winger who is forced into the c role by need.

The amount of picks they've accumulated is ridiculous. They've had the off-season that Seattle should have had.

They had three 2nd's in this past draft and already have five 2nd's in next year's draft .. that's nuts!

Honestly it seems like they're hitting the reset button at a time when they can conveniently shed salary, gain assets, and try to build an exciting young team in an effort to try and lure Matthews' home after his contract is done.

Dermott or Sandin+ for a 3~ million dollar fwd or 4-5 million forward with retention makes sense IMO. Although I would be happy to have both Sandin and Dermott for depth suddenly we are looking a little dry in the top 9 for secondary scoring. Top 6 forwards should be fine. 4th line has some good defensive elements. A 3rd line scorer is a big need.

Trade for Rakell in a deal that sends Engvall and prospects the other way. I think Rakell is the perfect fit beside Matthews and Marner and should be affordable to extend after making 3.8 million this coming year.

Rakell-Matthews-Marner
Bunting-Tavares-Nylander
Kerfoot-Spezza-Mikheyev
Robertson-Kampf-Simmonds
Gabriel
Brooks

Rielly / Brodie
Muzzin / Holl
Sandin / Dermott
Liljegren

Campbell
Mrazek

I'm actually pretty comfortable with that group to start the season. I think that team has better legs and more offensive depth than last year's group.

Not ideal. Hopefully Kampf proves me wrong
Kampf is a good 4C and nothing more. Really hope Dubas can make a couple decent moves here and get some value on guys who are looking to rebound. Otherwise, this team will seriously lack depth.

I'd love to see Kerfoot moved which would give us $7.1m to work with. $2.5m to a guy like Marcus Johansson to take Kerfoot's spot at 3C, $3m for Tomas Tatar and that would leave another $1.6m in space for a 6D or another forward or 2.

Find a way to move Engvall and that clears even more space.

Come on Dubas! Make it happen!

Connor Brown is a name to look out for. Leafs loved Connor Brown’s work ethic and I have to believe he can provide some needed secondary scoring and he would come in at a reasonable cap hit for a proven 20 goal guy. I’d send them a young roster player or pick or prospect to get it done.

Ya definitely agree that he is a 4C. I too think he will end up moving a guy or two to free up some cap space for a top 6W. Or maybe Dubas makes a trade for one with some retention to make the cap work without any major outwards.

Some of the potential trade candidates with various levels of retention needed and cost associated.

Tarasenko at 50% retained...Would you be interested?

Risk would be high. It would cost at least a 2nd rounder on the retention alone and probably more.

The reward is also high, though: Vladimir Tarasenko in pre-injury form for this year and next at $3.75M.

So, yeah, I'd be interested. Especially with his price supposedly dropping. But I'd also want to check and double-check with our medical staff before making any deal.
