Just pair him with Lyubushkin again. Boosh should be cheap. Shelter that pairing. Give Muzzin tough match ups. Give Gio-Lily second line forward duty. I'm hoping Gio has a similar effect on Lily that Chara had on McAvoy and Lily will be a legitimate top 4 defenseman after playing with Gio for a full season.
I'm fine with this. I couldn't care less about the President's Trophy. We can bandaid Rielly's partner for a bit and bide our time up to the trade deadline if needed. We don't have to have EVERYTHING done by October.

So if Toronto is willing to spend 5m on a goalie, I guess Gibson is till an option if we can get them to retain 1.4m.

I don’t see any other goalie, I’d be comfortable spending 5m on, Not on Campbell, Not on Husso, not on signing Fluery or Varlamov to a contract extensions at that range. Gibson at 5m is the more comfortable for me knowing he’s at least posted solid numbers before.

Well from the sounds of things, Winnipeg is looking to rebuild/retool. If they're looking at moving Wheeler/Scheifele then I'm sure moving Demelo wouldn't be an issue for them
Not sure but if he's cheap and can play in the top 4 I would think it would be a player they would want to hold on to.
Not saying he's untouchable but I would think it would be a decent price to acquire him or they will just keep him.

Well, I said someone who can handle minutes next to Rielly. Boosh isn’t really that guy.

Lyubushkin is fine. People might not like this, but he'd be a lot better if he didn't try to hit guys every time.

He just needs to realize that he can't hit guys like Kucherov and he'll be a solid supporting top 4 defenceman.

TOR

Varlamov, Semyon
Mayfield, Scott

NYI
Engvall, Pierre [RFA Rights]
Sandin, Rasmus [RFA Rights]
Holl, Justin
Mrázek, Petr ($800,000 retained)

Probably could use space for another depth scorer in the bottom six. Maybe all three of that fourth line are redundant. But just did a quick and dirty roster off one big trade and a couple of hometown discount vet adds.

A straight Muzzin for Varlamov deal continues to make a lot of sense for me. Nearly cap neutral, NYI get the top-4 LHD they need and the kind of dman Lou likes. We get an average starter with a history of strong playoff performances and no long-term commitment, while clearing out our LHD jam.

Forsberg is likely to make more than Nylander, and it will likely be with his current team, who can go 8 years.

Maybe Burakovsky but he's coming off a $4.9mm, so add at least 1 to that, so you're at $6mm.
Nichuskin off a career year at $5mm, you know what they say about a career year when you're going to free agency.

If you trade Nylander you want to get back a 1st. line talent, because Leafs only have about 4 top 6 players today.
With those parameters you can't trade Nylander. We won't find an equal talent in trade who makes less. I've made trade proposals for him but I believe we should keep him and sign Nichushkin and complete that second line.

It depends what role you play him in. If you want Rielly playing top offensive competition then you're already in a tough spot. If you shelter a Rielly pairing you're probably getting the most out of him (especially if Muzzin/Gio are your other 2 LHD). Rielly-Lyubushkin playing 3rd lines shouldn't be an issue. Rielly makes up the minutes on special teams and takes shifts with Brodie if/when the Leafs are chasing the game in the 3rd.

I like the deal. Makes perfect sense for both teams. I don't see Muzzin waiving for NYI though.

If Kerfoot and Holl are moved, they might be able to fit in a Nichushkin, but the hole is a bottom 6 center.

I'd still be okay shoehorning a Marlie into the 4th. line center role, even if they have to audition several over the season. Wonder how many would be lost to waivers?

Random thought but how about an offer sheet for Jake Oettinger. Offer him a 6 yr/32 million contract, 5.33mil aav. Would only cost us our 1st and 3rd round pick, and we'll be set with our goaltender for the present and future

Thats why I think if we aren't going to use Sandin and give him a chance in the top 4 we should look to trade him for an equal talent and age center. Our defense would still be very good, we'd get a young 3c who has potential to be a 2c one day and we complete our 2nd line. Nichushkin is a better version of Hyman and would make that 2nd line very good.

So does Josh Manson suck again now that the playoffs are over?

No, but he's a 4/5 guy, who probably wants $3-4 mil. I don't think we can afford that to be honest. At this point, they seem committed to the five that are signed, plus Sandin, so bringing in a $3-4 mil guy likely isn't in the cards.

I don't see any contract that makes sense for us that Dallas wouldn't match. I think they match that one with no hesitation.

Dallas easily matches.

10. Justin Braun

9. Maxim Mamin

8. Dominik Kubalik

7. Zach Aston-Reese

6. Evan Rodrigues

5. Ville Husso

4. Miles Wood

3. Andrew Cogliano

2. Darren Helm

1. Marc-Andre Fleury

Honourable mention: Nico Sturm, Trevor Lewis, Johan Larsson, Sam Gagner, Ryan Dzingel, Mark Pysyk, Nick Cousins

I believe the compensation would actually be a 1st, 2nd and 3rd (32/5=6.4). Regardless, I wouldn't be surprised if Dallas matches.

Speaking of offer sheets, Dobson is out there. Could be a top pair RHD for the next decade, I wonder if anyone tries on him. Imagine the headlines if it was us!
Dobson would be an amazing add but we would need to move muzzin or brodie afterwards so we could add a goalie and top 6 LW.

Anyone have any good young center candidates that would make a good swap for Sandin if the Leafs decide to move him ?

You gotta have cap space to overpay to have a chance teams do not match. A Leaf OS would only piss off other teams and is not something in the Leafs best interests.

I've mentioned it in here before. There are 3 targets that would be perfect for the Leafs in the 4-6M offer sheet range which would cost the Leafs 2023 1st and 3rd. All 3 of these players would probably sign 6Mx5, Mangiapane maybe signs for less $.

1. Mangiapane - most likely to not be matched. He is Calgary's 3rd best natural LW and 3rd best natural LW that is currently a FA. If they matched they would be handicapped because they can't trade him for a year and they basically wave goodbye to Gaudreau.
2. Dobson - less likely that NYI don't match. They currently have 12M in cap space with no big RFA's to sign.
3. Oettinger - less likely than either of the previous 2 names. Dallas has 19M to match with only Robertson to sign assuming Klingberg walks which looks likely.

Unfortunately the Leafs don't currently own their 2023 3rd which would be required for this offer sheet. They gave it up in the Lyubushkin trade. I think they could get it back by dealing Engvall to Arizona though.

Hayton.

Latest Leaf Report
-Mirtle says Muzzin isn't being traded.
-Holl will be traded
-Liljegren's AAV is the highest Leafs want to go for Sandin's contract
-Senses Leafs will spend up to 7 million on 2 goalies. One goalie at 4-5 million, and other at 2 million. The goalies Leafs will look at are Varlamov, Fleury, Husso or Campbell.
-reshape the bottom 6

Getting a firmer idea of the offseason now. Thing Varlamov would be the main choice, especially if they manage to get a decent young guy with some potential as the backup.

Curious what cheap forwards they'll be targeting to round out the bottom 6
