I think it is more likely he is fine if he is just waived and then plays sporadically over the course of the year or maybe another team claims/trades for him. It will probably come down to what Simmonds wants, but he is probably done with the Leafs as any kind of regular/full time player. Same with Clifford.

Spezza is the only one who can still provide value as both a leader and a player. Although there are a number of players who can provide more value than Spezza on a 4th line, even for cheap.
Spezza should be our 13th forward 1000%.

I have been thinking about a move of Nylander to Philly built around Travis Konecny and that 5th overall pick. Konecny had a bit of a down year, but he only makes 5.5mil and is signed for a year longer than Nylander. Maybe move Holl with Nylander and build a bigger deal involving another roster player from Philly. Would Konecny work better with Tavares?

Framework deal of Nylander + Holl for 5th + Konecny + Frost

Malgin is heating up

It would be great to make room for him on our roster, although I would be more than fine getting a decent pick for him so he can have a legit opportunity in the NHL again.

I find it ironic that people feel like Marchment wasn't given a fair shake with the Leafs after 4 games, even though he was coached by Keefe in the AHL for 2.5 years prior to that, but they have decided that Malgin is a bust and sucks after like a month in our organization and 8 games with the Leafs despite already playing in 200 NHL games as a 22 year old at the time.

I don't think Philly does this.

I don’t think Malgin wants to be here.

I don't hate this.

Frost is also a Soo guy.

Looking through CapFriendly at the UFA's there are a lot of interesting names, though not many that seem feasible with the current cap structure.

He absolutely does. He even said it was always his dream to play for Toronto or Montreal.

At the same time, I think he wants a guaranteed opportunity, or a job which is his to lose, which he has absolutely earned at this point.

He doesn't want to be in the press box, or fighting with half a dozen guys for one depth spot, when he knows that he would probably have half the league fighting for his services if he was a UFA. He has been one of the top European players the past two years, he is outplaying NHL talent in this tournament, and it is clear he has the skill to make it in the NHL. It is mostly finding a place where he can thrive.

You can thank sweet Lou for that little parting gift. And dubas’ hands were tied, Lou handed a geezer Marleau a full nmc and patty demanded a trade to either SJ or a team that agreed to buy him out. He had already put his McMansion up for sale and had sent the wife and kids back to cali before the playoffs were over.

Dubas’ hands were not tied - he just made a bad decision. He should have traded Kapanen and Johnsson rather than sign them only to have to trade them the next year. You lost value by keeping them and you also paid the 1st for moving Marleau.

Marleau demanded a trade and packed up and went home, unless his contract was traded no matter what hard ass stance people want to take it wouldn’t matter his cap hit was on the team.

This seems like a false narrative. I have never heard this before. I have discussed the Marleau trade on this forum countless times since it happened and no one has ever brought it up. I just looked up "Marleau trade request" on twitter and there's nothing from his time in Toronto although plenty of tweets about a trade request from the sharks in 2016. Is there any proof to this?

He tied his own hands and left himself with no option than to pay to move Marleau when he could have just parked his games streak in the press box.
Hopefully the lesson was learned. When you hire inexperienced personnel you have to to live with the growing pains.

It was reported by freideman, mirtle and others. I don’t care to dig it up, but it’s definitely true.

absolutely! his speed is absolutely outstanding! and he also has very good hands and is a very good scorer. after 4 games he is much more conspicuous as very good players like hischier and meier. and i am sure, if you use him correclty he would be a very good nhl scorer too

24 year old rookie Andreas Johnsson had just scored 43pts in 73 games
22 year old Kasperi Kapanen had just had a breakout 44pts in 78 games

You are suggesting we should have traded both of them to keep the 39 year old declining Marleau?

Then he gave away a pick for nothing… players not reporting don’t get paid.

Yep. They weren’t core pieces. This isn’t hindsight either, I said it at the time.

If you trade them at that point you might have got a 1st round pick for both. At that point you'd have 3 first round picks in 2020 instead of 1. The issue is that no team had/has ever given up a 1st round pick to dump cap, especially for 1 year. Just like the Matthews/Marner contracts - Dubas set a precedent that has yet to be followed.

His cap hit still gets tagged to the team though, they don’t care about the cash. It the cap hit they wanted to avoid. If they could’ve bought him out themselves and saved the cap space they would have, the reason marleau got so much in a buyout trade is because he got all his money, and the team got stuck with the whole cap hit.

Plus we'd have prospects one year more advanced and Johnsson would've received a better return. The Blackhawks did this the best. Almost every year they traded away Byfuglien, Bolland, Ladd, Versteeg etc., while simultaneously graduating a Hartman, Saad, Schwartz, Shaw etc. Rather than always spending draft capital to try and make each roster better than the last, they accepted ups and downs in favour of a stead stream of reinforcements.

Engvall is the only internal forward graduation since Johnsson in 2018. Being more proactive in moving depth players would have led to a more robust, sustainable prospect pool. People were upset that our 2021 2nd round pick had the audacity not to leave school yet. That's because our demand exceeds our supply.

There's a team that might lose their #1 forward and have a need for RH forwards. One of our core 4 was also born there.

Marleaus family wanted to go home. It’s known. He had his house up for sale. It had a literal leafs rink in it so it was pretty noticeable.

You are also forgetting that we got 15th, hallander and Rodrigues for kapp
Basically we kept kappy for the year and traded
down 2 spots. Of course amirov has had a health issues but that wasn’t known

A trade that people will hate but will work out very well in the long run is Nylander for Martin Necas.

I wanted to trade willy for pesce and necas his first holdout.

From my memory, the report was that both teams were making egregious proposals. I think Carolina offered Faulk and a future 1st while Toronto asked for Slavin.

I’m okay with spezz cliff & simmer being 13-15 on the depth chart as long as 6-12 get reworked to be bigger faster and more direct

Tkachuck is the only interesting piece for me in Willy deal

Tkachuck is not being moved, unless it's for Matthews.

With their situation with Gaudreau they might be looking for a replacement true.
However, they do have to re-up Tkachuk and Mangiapane.

If I were targeting it would be Elias Lindholm or Rasmus Andersson.

Monahan is an interesting piece, almost wonder if he could be a buy-out candidate?

Then there’s nothing to be done between the clubs regarding Willy
