Yep and then Dubas tying his own hands and having to pay a premium to get out of it.

Growing pains with a rookie GM.
How exactly did Kyle “tie his own hands?” When his predecessor signed the deal and the player held all the cards?
I can’t wait to hear this one….

I really wonder about the construction of this line. Needs some more identity to it. Not the most energetic, not fast, not a shutdown line, etc.

I think the fourth will be reworked a bit in the off-season. I just don't think these 3 guys are the answer, at least not together.
I think those are just contract placeholders in Bert’s mock-up, cliff and simmer both have contracts and spezz I think you keep around, obviously they all don’t play at once and maybe you can have them rotate around one spot 4RW? Blackwell would be fine for a spot, you have steeves and Anderson on the marlies and who knows what FA’s they look at

And 6.25 in cap flexibility, Again thank sweet Lou for that. I’m sure of dubas could’ve moved paddy without giving up a first he would have, no?
The cap flexibility was used for Kapanen/Johnsson who he shipped out a year later anyway. I'm sure he took what he thought was the best deal. He could have just kept Marleau and bridged Marner and traded 2 of Kapanen/Johnsson/Kerfoot. As of right now I'd rather have Jarvis (or Holloway/Mercer/Schneider) over Kapanen/Johnsson/Marleau/Kerfoot. If Marleau's money was still on the books Dubas could have saved him from himself and not given Marner that contract.

It gets even worse when you consider we traded him away so we could sign Kapanen and Johnsson and now none of them are here.
I can respect that there was a trade return garnered for each of Johnsson and Kapanen. The worst part of the Marleau trade for me was the pick being in the draft lottery (and ending up at 13th overall).

He couldn’t keep marleau, paddy picked up shop and demanded a trade with a full nmc to only one team, or to a team that promised to pay him his full salary buy out and hang that cap hit on their roster the full season

Thank Babcock for that 80 point pace start of the season

I don't recall a trade demand from Marleau. If Marleau forced Dubas to give away a 1st I think that looks even worse.

JT Miller is bolting back to the US in a year once he’s a UFA. I’m not moving Nylander for one season of Miller, too lateral. I’m a fan of the player, but I’d rather add him to the team with Nylander.

And one season of Kerfoot doesn’t make much sense for Vancouver either.
Kerfoot is from BC, I can definitely see him wanting to re-sign there.

I should have added a disclaimer there, when I mentioned poor construction I was referring to the contracts in place and not @BertCorbeau's write-up.

I wonder if that is an area we see Dubas tinker in the off-season. I'd love to have Spezza back, I thought Blackwell brought a good energetic style of play to the fourth line, I just don't know about the other 2. I would love a Clifford or Simmonds Esque player, but one that has more speed to their game.

You should do a little digging. Marleau demanded a trade to only San Jose, he had pulled his kids from school and put his house up for sale while the playoffs were on going after the leafs were eliminated and he told management he wouldn’t be back and would only accept a trade to SJ. Either way the leafs were burdened with that cap hit as it was a 35+ contract so even if marleau held out or retired it would’ve been on our cap.
Kyles hands were tied, by his predecessor

I'm fine with that. Babcock wasn't there for the loss to CBJ though and that's what ultimately determined where the pick would end up (in the lottery).

I agree, I think long hard conversations are going to be had about those two and spezza being bubble roster guys going forward. They might all be up and down on waivers all season getting in game action on a rotational basis, but being integral parts of the roster through leadership and hard nosed work in between games

Keep in mind Clifford and Simmonds are both signed through next year.

That being said it's entirely possible Clifford is waived again at the start of the year and is more about long term depth for the playoffs.

But I agree. I think some tinkering and depth options would be best for that line. I think Spezza will be back though.

A better start means they don’t play a team they’re statistically tied in for the final wc spot and maybe they draw a weaker opponent. Obviously they’re responsible for the bed they’ve made, I just like to make sure the Lou/Babcock fan boys here realize how their golden boys hindered those performances

I wonder if there is a possibility Simmonds ends up retiring this summer. He has clearly lost a step, has long miles on his body, etc. He would be leaving money on the table but it's a real possibility IMO.

I wonder that same thing about Muzzin. While he was injured he did make some ominous comments that implied retirement could be an option

Forsberg might be too expensive but if he is available as a UFA, we could double dip and sign him and trade Willie ???
A good buddy of mine who’s a massive kings fan in LA figured they’re going hard after him to pair with arvidsson again. He’s thinking 7 x 9-9.5m

It can also be argued that playing against an equal opponent should have been somewhat of a breath of fresh air for the team after three playoff series of being the underdog. In any case, there's plenty of blame to go around for the events of that season and offseason. I'll stop here since I'm becoming uncomfortably misty-eyed recalling it all! :(

Had he not tied his own hands he could have just sat him in the press box for the season.

The term is a little scary as it always is on the open market. Would be a fun signing though! He and AM34 could compete for best mustache on the team.

I think it is more likely he is fine if he is just waived and then plays sporadically over the course of the year or maybe another team claims/trades for him. It will probably come down to what Simmonds wants, but he is probably done with the Leafs as any kind of regular/full time player. Same with Clifford.

Spezza is the only one who can still provide value as both a leader and a player. Although there are a number of players who can provide more value than Spezza on a 4th line, even for cheap.

Forsberg is awesome but the opposite of what we need to be doing as an org right now, imo.

Most intriguing names to me (all would require us to move out salary) woulds be:

1. Palat (scary contract and age combo)
2. Neiderreiter
3. Rust
4. Wood (RFA)
5. Samsanov

Trade targets are a little more difficult...

- Very interested in Mayfield and Varlamov from NYI.
- Jake Evans from Montreal would be an interesting pick up if we planned on putting Tavares on the wing and needed someone to skate fast down the middle and clog things up defensively. Not sure if Montreal would rather hold on to him, but he will be falling down their depth chart quickly.
