After some thought.

Pending UFA's who are gone:
Campbell
Mikheyev
Blackwell
Lyubushkin

I think Campbell will get a better offer from a more goalie-desperate team. I'm not opposed to bringing him back but I think Dubas and company will actively look for a more legitimate #1G.

Mikheyev will get a nice open market contract that the Leafs won't want to pony up for.

Blackwell is just typical league depth.

Boost is probably gone as I believe they'll want to give Liljegren a chance at a full-time role next year. That could change if Hollis traded.

Pending UFA's who I think will be re-signed:
Giordano
Spezza

The defense was noticeably steadier when Gio came on board and he made a formidable partner for Rielly.

I think the Leafs highly value Spezza still and will want him back. He still wants to be here.

Most likely to be traded:
Nylander
Kerfoot
Mrazek
Muzzin
Holl

I firmly believe that the Leafs are looking at a change in the core. And Nylander is the obvious best option.

Kerfoot is a useful utility player but is an easy cap casualty especially if the Leafs are higher on Robertson making the lineup next year.

Mrazek depends on what happens with his counterpart in net. If they get a legit #1 goalie, he's gone. I bet they give him another chance at a #1B otherwise.

I actually think it's more likely Muzzin retires as opposed to gets traded but he's an obvious name to shed cap.

Holl's name has been circulated a lot. Could be some good value on the market for him but at the same time he provides valuable RHD depth and was solid in the playoffs.

When all is said and done here is what I believe the pencilled in spots in the roster are heading into next season:

Bunting-Matthews-Marner
________ - Tavares - ________
Engvall - Kampf - Kase
Clifford - Spezza - Simmonds

Rielly - Brodie
Giordano - Liljegren
Sandin - Holl
Muzzin

________
________

The 4th line is just based on who's signed. I imagine some other depth players will be acquired.

Priorities for the off-season:

- Stabilize the goaltending
- A core shake up. I mean if they can add to the core without moving another body, great. But cap-wise I have a hard time seeing it happening, hence Nylander being moved.
- Find steady linemates for the second line that can get the most out of a declining Tavares

If that’s what we come back with as a bottom 6, Dubas learned nothing from this loss. He’s learned from all the previous losses, so I assume he’ll learn again.

That entire 4th line has to go. Engvall and Kase should probably both foo too, but at least one has to.

We need at least two physically imposing defensemen, so likely Holl and Giordano can’t be back.

Really like the idea of trading Nylander plus Kerfoot for JT Miller with retention and Garland.

Solidifies our second line finally.

Bunting Matthews Marner
Miller Tavares Garland

That's a really really good top 6

Well Clifford and Simmonds are under contact and I said that the leafs will Sign additional depth.

Also Engvall and Kase are RFA’s.. I can’t see them just moving Engvall after a solid year (and losing Mikheyev.

They may not qualify kase though.

Very curious too. He is an RFA though, so maybe we can still get something for him still.
In a perfect world they send him to Seattle for their 2023 2nd. That would open up the option to offer sheet anyone from 2M+. The ideal offer sheet targets would be Dobson/Mangiapane at 6Mx5 (2023 1st,2nd).

The Canucks had such a resurgence this season led by Miller that I don't know how interested they would be in breaking things up, assuming they think they will have a shot at resigning him. If not, I think its a maybe but I don't think you would get any retention without throwing a big sweetener in. The bones of a deal are there because Willie's age is a better fit with where the Canucks are but in one more season Miller will cost them well over $6.9M to retain with Matthews and Marner's new deals around the corner so that might be the real killer.30 year old Miller will be looking for big term and AAV and the Leafs don't have that kind of cap space until the Tavares deal is done.

I would assume any Nylander deal needs to be cap neutral or better for at least the next two seasons so there is some cap growth and Brodie and Muzz are replaced with a pair that are at least somewhat under $10.6m. One year of Miller isn't enough return for Willie and I don't think they can make the space to re-sign him. They need to find a 25 year old Miller themselves.

JT Miller is bolting back to the US in a year once he’s a UFA. I’m not moving Nylander for one season of Miller, too lateral. I’m a fan of the player, but I’d rather add him to the team with Nylander.

And one season of Kerfoot doesn’t make much sense for Vancouver either.

what do you think it will cost you all to get rid of Mrazek salary?

Best case scenario maybe Chicago is interested in taking Mrazek for “future considerations” much like Fleury.

There’s going to be a bit of a goalie carousal so Dubas might have to wait to see where the chips fall.

I would think Kerfoot would happily re-sign in Vancouver.

I'm guessing Holl goes to Dallas. Their RHD depth if Klingberg walks is: 1. Hakanpaa, 2. Barteaux. They have no win now pieces worth asking for. I think the best option is to offer them Robertson, Holl for Johnston/Bourque.

I agree. Can't wait to see HF melt when they see we didn't have to get rid of a 1st or 2nd to shed Mrazek.

I find it entertaining that - and I don't know how much overlap there is here - part of our fanbase still holds Dubas to the flame for paying to get out of Marleau's contract, and part of our fanbase wants him to move Mrazek at all costs

I don't think Mrzaek will cost us assets to move. To me, there is a market out there.

Personally, I thought his 2nd half after the 1st injury was 1B quality goaltending. The injuries are an obvious issue, but I am not against holding on to him.

Acquiring JT Miller would be a very Tampa Bay type of move (literally :) ) and I don't think we have the guts to do it. Not only would it be expensive, but we would likely need to move Nylander or another big salary to make it happen. Dubas is too loyal to make that kind of move. Muzzin is the guy on defence that I could see us moving on from, but damn, how small of a defence are we willing to run?

Sadly, I think we will just swap out some 3rd and 4th line guys, throw a few more Kampf/Kase hail Marys, and hope for the best.

What I would like to see:

1st line
Miller - New player - Tavares
Engvall - Kampf - Robertson
New player - Blackwell - New player

Rielly - Liljgren
Chychrun - Brodie
New Player - Gio

New Player
Mrazek

Paying the assets to get a guy like JT Miller and not being able to re-sign him doesn’t seem like the move to me. Even if we can fit him in cap wise do we really want to give a long term deal to a 30-year old?

Tampa/Boston usually move significant assets for players with some term or players they can re-sign.

Leafs have wasted so many futures on rentals and haven’t even gotten past the 1st round.

^ This. Then they pay whatever it takes to move Mrazek and sign Holtby as the 1a.
this....was just going to post that. Campbell needs a vet who will insulate him and not challenge him for his job. Holtby would be a great fit.

We need to invest more in keeping pucks out of our net. This comes in many forms:

  • Fewer meltdown games
  • More consistent goaltending
  • Forwards that can defend
  • Just a better overall defensive group

Tying Rielly to our weakest defenceman in Boosh was a recipe for disaster.

Our worst players in terms of GA/60 (Evolving hockey)

1. Nylander
2. Clifford
3. Tavares
4. Muzzin
5. Bunting
6. Robertson
7. Marner
8. Rielly
9. Matthews
10. Kerfoot

If you consider Goals For, here are our worst 10 in G+/60

1. Ritchie (lol)
2. Nylander
3. Muzzin
4. Simmonds
5. Tavares
6. Boosh
7. Kampf
8. Spezza
9. Holl
10. Kase

Now some of these players played more difficult minutes. The Kampf line started nearly every shift in the defensive zone, and usually against the other teams top line, but still, if you can't score, you have to be very good defensively to earn a spot in an NHL lineup on a contending team.
