The Leafs should inquire about acquiring Myers to buy him out. They have to sign a lot of new contracts this year and would benefit from the initial cap bump, the penalty next season should be offset by the cap going up even if it's 1M.
It’s a negative hit this upcoming season and a positive hit the next year, I’d be more interested in myers as a reclamation project vs the 16k in positive cap influence over 2 seasons.

Same. I think Myers is a very good project to sign if/when he's bought out. He was solid with the Marlies and I think the Leafs can do their magic.

I don't really care to acquire him only to buy him out, unless the Preds want to take back Mrazek.

Yeah pretty much. There's a lot of things they can do to try and find a better balance and keep a high quality team again.

I would agree that I hope they find heavier players that have a track record of producing. There are always options in free agency, let's just hope they can find the best one. I really think they only really need 1 big forward free agency add. Obviously someone with a scoring touch but that also brings some bite, intangibles.... something. Kadri would be perfect in a perfect world... but you know...

I personally wouldn't touch the defensive group either other than maybe trading Holl and replacing him with a cheaper alternative... maybe. I don't think you can go with a top 6 that only has 1 natural RHD.

I'd look to bring in Colin Miller or Mark Pysyk, (hell even Myers) they can play RD on the cheap and I've got to the point where I'm just saying play the 6 best guys and make it work

Liljegren and Brodie can play RD, slot Sandin or Rielly over if you have to

I think Knies is one of the big bodied forwards we need, I'd look to get one big bodied guy in UFA and try to drag him out of school when his season is over, if he won't come out look around at the TDL

A Nick Paul type would be interesting

I'm surprised we haven't heard much about the Leafs and their interest in a few free EU/KHL "wallets". Typically there are 1 or 2 we are linked to, even in rumours.

It's been very quiet.

We can't go again with the same style of puck-looking defensemen. There is a serious need for some intimidation on the back-end. I'd ne looking at guys like Ryan Graves in New Jersey or Nikita Zadorov in UFA.

Nick Paul gets a good contract, so I don't think we can afford it. You have to find those guys before they get paid. Christian Fischer would be my top target for that type of player.

I wouldn’t lose sleep with a Nylander for JT Miller swap.
Nylander only has 1 year more than Miller on his contract. Maybe find a way to get Garland by tossing Kerfoot+ in the deal.

I’d do Nylander + Kerfoot + ‘22 1st for JT Miller + Garland (see if we can get retention)

Bunting-Matthews-Marner
Miller-Tavares-Garland

2nd line hasn’t been working, I think that 2nd line would.

There are not too many guys out there other than Kuzmenko and Dronov.

Although Denis Malgin will likely garner some interest. 5 points in 2 WC games thus far; better than teammate Timo Meier and T-2 in the tournament right now (behind Flames legend Roman Cervenka).

IDK if the Leafs will have interest or a spot for him, but we may be able to get something decent for his trade rights at least.

Paul is going to get paid which is why I said type, he wasn't expensive at the TDL but he plays a game that translates well to the playoffs, those sort of "functional grit" players are always useful

I like physical defenseman but I'm not sure how much those guys will play under Keefe, Lyb was hardly used

Lyubushkin also sucked and should have been taken out of the lineup altogether.

Keefe had no issues playing Muzzin.

Nylander has two years left.

What's everyone's impression of Rubins? Any chance he can make the jump full-time or is he going to top out at 7th/8th D?

I’m hoping for maximum improvement, and that includes replacing Keefe, so all my suggestions are based on him being gone.

Bunting, Kampf and Lyubushkin (for Ritchie) were pretty good players that fit this mold.

What should have been done last off-season instead? What are the alternatives for this off-season? Let's see what Dubas can and should do from your eyes. I'm genuinely curious to know.
The bottom 6 forwards needs to have a combination of Skill, Robustness, Tenacity, Speed, Grit, and physicality. The top 6 need to contain at least 1 power forward type of player who's not afraid of doing the dirty work.

Kampf is just a Defensive specialist. But he's not tenacious or aggressive at all. I'd still keep Kampf because he's valuable. Engvall, Kerfoot, Kase, and Spezza are all either soft, not tenacious or slow. Clifford and Simmonds are past their prime and slow. All can go.

Obviously, with our cap situation, it's so tough to do moves. But here's what I would do.

1. Let Engvall, Kase, Spezza, Clifford, and Simmonds all go. Trade Kerfoot, Holl and Mrazek for Salary relief.
2. Re-sign Mikheyev to the cheapest deal you can.
3. With the Remaining Cap-space...Sign Nick Paul. He's the exact type of forward the Leafs are missing in the top 9.
4. Sign Boris Katchouk to a cheap deal. He's gritty, speedy and has offensive potential. (Soo hoo connection too)
5. Promote Curtis Douglas as a full-time 4th line Center. (Assuming he does really well in training camp)

And if Mathew Knies decides to play next year before the playoffs.....He's a perfect power forward type of player to add for the playoffs.

Bunting - Mathews - Marner
Knies - Tavares - Mikheyev
Nick Paul - Kampf - Nylandert
Katchouk - Douglas - Blackwell

Now thats a team with Playoff tenacity

Anyone interested in Evander Kane? lol
Would love Evander Kane. Clearly still a very good player and physcial forward. Top 6 is missing

What type of contract is he gonna get in the open market now that he rebuilt his value in Edmonton?

Not sure Malgin fits where the Leafs are heading. On paper I'd love to see what he can do now but I think it's time to cut ties with him one way or another.

I think there's a few more the Leafs could unearth, mostly projects that could use AHL development.

Chlapik would be someone I hope the Leafs can convince to give it one more go in NA.
