Moving Nylander before JT would be the coward’s way out. Nylander is flawed but he’s an elite talent in the upswing. Tavares is just going to slowly or quickly get worse over the next 3 years. Being able to stick handle around Tavares would preserve the window of contention for a long while. Whereas moving Nylander in the next 2 will likely result in the downgrade of the team unless we get young bluechippers back.

Seems like we've had a huge turnover since Tavares came along.

Hah! Another reclamation might be Philippe Myers whom Nashville loaned to the Marlies. If he’s bought out we could scoop him up having had him in the organization already.

The Leafs should be willing to throw some money around. Get some of these guys on one-way deals.

I'm willing to keep Engvall but at our price, I can accept "fair" for both sides but I wouldn't be willing to overpay to keep him

Campbell hasn't proven he's a good starter yet so I'm not willing to give him starter money, if somebody else wants to so be it but I'm not comfortable taking on that kind of risk

I'd keep whoever I can get cheaper between Gio and Holl, I think Rielly, Muzzin, Brodie and Holl/Gio is a solid group when you add Liljegren and Sandin to it then some cheap depth

I'd like a couple of bigger cycling wingers for Tavares then build an offensive 3rd line around Nylander but that would be tight money wise

Yeah pretty much. There's a lot of things they can do to try and find a better balance and keep a high quality team again.

I would agree that I hope they find heavier players that have a track record of producing. There are always options in free agency, let's just hope they can find the best one. I really think they only really need 1 big forward free agency add. Obviously someone with a scoring touch but that also brings some bite, intangibles.... something. Kadri would be perfect in a perfect world... but you know...

I personally wouldn't touch the defensive group either other than maybe trading Holl and replacing him with a cheaper alternative... maybe. I don't think you can go with a top 6 that only has 1 natural RHD.

Mrazek and Kerfoot need to be gone. Mrazek for obvious reasons but Kerfoot is too much of a tweener to stay in the top six. Especially after this quote.

Kerfoot brings zero tenacity. Don’t care if he’s BFFs with Marner, take a hike.

His buyout actually produces a cap increase the second year that just exceeds the cap hit for the first yea. it’s almost a cap neutral buyout for Nashville and in fact buys them 16k in total cap over the two seasons

I wonder if there would be any consideration for the Jets to trade Hellbucyk this off-season. For a team that is likely going to rebuild or retool, I would throw a lot of assets to try and get him. There were the comments from Scheifele about assessing if he wants to stay, firing their coach....

Friedman on 590 says

Leafs will make changes, more tenacity needed in top 6. Questions where JT plays next season, centre or wing.

Dubas will be back. No concern on contract status, though wonders if extension happens.

Feels this has to be for lack of another team, Dubas' summer of Kawhi, they will have to really consider a major move.

Thinks Giordano returns at a lower number.

Don't expect a long term deal with Sandin or Liljegren, shorter deals in that 1.5-2M range

Doesn't sound like Campbell will return, Leafs opened with 2.75M in initial offer which is far below Campbell's.

My 2 cents

If JT is already at wing, the contract sucks. We have an 11M winger already.

3.8M for Mrazek for 2.75M for Campbell doesn't make sense.

They cannot simply consider a major move, it actually needs to happen. He can't say "we'd be different but not better"
They've been saying they need more tenacity for the last 3 years lmao. Dubas said he was gonna change the bottom 6 and it's still the same soft shit.

Dubas has no clue what players to target for Tenacity/toughness. He really doesn't.

He probably just looks at a player's height and goes "Oooh he's big. Lets sign him"

Kerfoot is a soft muffin. You're never gonna win playoff series with guys like Kerfoot.

I can't believe we traded Kadri for this guy.

"But bro, he makes good defensive stick checks from time to time. He's valuable!"

Kerfoot, Holl, Mrazek salary all needs to go. Let Engvall walk too.

How much Cap-space would we have.

He signed Simmonds, Clifford and Ritchie. 1 guy didn't make it through the season because he was awful. The other 2 got taken out of the playoff line-up because they took terrible penalties, even though they were tough.

So my point remains...He doesn't know what to do when it comes to Tenacity/Toughness. All the players he signs either ends up getting scratched, awful or on the verge of retirement.

He needs some serious counseling on toughness because he's picking out of a hat

Bunting, Kampf and Lyubushkin (for Ritchie) were pretty good players that fit this mold.

What should have been done last off-season instead? What are the alternatives for this off-season? Let's see what Dubas can and should do from your eyes. I'm genuinely curious to know.

Muzzin's name has been coming up as somebody they should/could move in order to free up cap space and make room Sandin in the lineup, assuming we can resign Gio. I was glad to see Muzzin play well in the playoffs but Sandin in and Muzzin out makes our D softer/smaller.

The Leafs should inquire about acquiring Myers to buy him out. They have to sign a lot of new contracts this year and would benefit from the initial cap bump, the penalty next season should be offset by the cap going up even if it's 1M.

Get Stolarz at $950k for the year and figure out the rest. That gives the Leafs $4.5M on goaltending still to be at the same number spent from this season.

It may seem risky to somewhat steer away from the thought of a tandem, but it's realistically gonna play our better than how things did this season.

Campbell basically was the defacto starter with mediocre to bad results for a lot of the year and Mrazek never got going.

You also have Woll/Kallgren beneath that with another year of development - could result in a similar dynamic to when Sparks unsurped McElhinney (but hopefully with better results).

Preparing for 50 pages of discussion about what team will pay a 2nd for Kerfoot. Fascinating off-season ahead. Atlantic's not ready.
