Marchment is often injured and has had one year showing he's a top 6 guy. I get the appeal, but I'd rather not. Especially if he's looking for top 6 money.

13. There’s no doubt Toronto’s Rasmus Sandin is getting a qualifying offer, but what’s less certain is how things will play out for him. He was going very well until injured late in the season, and couldn’t get back into the lineup once healthy during the playoffs. The Maple Leafs were very happy with Jake Muzzin’s post-season performance, leading to a left-side logjam with Muzzin, Sandin, Morgan Rielly, Mark Giordano and TJ Brodie (who prefers his weakside). Toronto’s cap situation doesn’t afford Sandin contract room. Good player and the team knows it, but the numbers make everything a tight puzzle.

As for Jack Campbell, the last I’d heard is there hadn’t been any contract conversations for months and anything that was discussed — I’d heard the two sides were far apart — was, in the words of one source, “no longer relevant.” All his agent, Kurt Overhardt, would say is “there’s been no material contract conversation” since the end of the season.

Okay I have seen this multiple times and I don't get it. Sandin's AAV won't be high even on a medium term deal so how can we not afford him? What am I missing?

Ya I really don’t get that? He isn’t getting a 4 mill contract. Would probably be a stretch to get to 2 for him.

Bridge is an easy option

32 thoughts tidbit, which I think was kind of obvious but some people are insistent this isn't the case.

New Jersey is going to be fascinating the next few weeks. Number two pick in play, making a list of players they would consider trading for it. One guarantee is if they do move it, it’s for talent with a lot of team control. Same with Ottawa at seventh overall.

Those picks aren't getting moved.

Muzzin for Henrique could make sense. Not sure if Muzzin would waive for Anaheim. Leafs clear up their logjam on LD and pick up a ~top 6~ forward. Anaheim replace Lindholm and gives Drysdale a stay at home D partner. Term offsets. Toronto picks up 200k in additional salary. Maybe add on to the deal and Anaheim throws in Stolarz.

I feel like he gets a one year deal for about the same as he made last year and then something like a 3 year deal for a number in the mid-high 2's or low 3's depending on how he does. Same for Liljegren.

I think it's about opportunity. He doesn't see an opportunity with having Rielly on the top pairing, Muzzin on the 2nd pairing and Giordano on the 3rd.

Which one is he going to replace, keeping in mind that traditionally, Keefe likes to have his 2nd pair as a shutdown pair.

If Friedman is to be believed, it certainly doesn't sound like Campbell is a priority. Didn't get the vibe from Dubas's presser that Jack was in the plans either.

I think they either have another plan (which would presumably involve making a splashy move for a bona fide workhorse #1 or going cheap on the goalie position as a philosophy) or they've lost faith in Campbell and don't want to pay him more than Mrazek.

That’s the exact vibe I got from that tidbit, almost like they have someone in mind they are going for.

It’s more so, on the left side as it stands, It’s Morgan Riley, Muzzin, Gio. There’s no room on the left side for Sandin at the moment. He hasn’t played right the side very good at all, so it looks like he’s stuck behind those 3. They could probably get Sandin on a 3 year deal at 2.5m

It’s short sited to move a 22 year old dman because of a 39 year old dman and Muzzin, but I am also okay moving Sandin if it means filling that 2nd line LW spot with someone with term.

I bet it’s Gibson or Hellebyuck. A legit starter. If they were looking at a 1A/1B they would definitely still be engaged with Campbell.
Exactly. Unless they specifically have someone in mind you’d think they’d for sure still be in constant talks with Campbell, as no other FA option (except maybe Kuemper) is clearly better than Jack.

I’d be thrilled with Hellebuyck, he’s my #1 in a dream scenario.

What does Winnipeg want for Hellebuyck? If they're trading him, that means they're no longer trying to win now, so that means picks and prospects. Does Sandin, Robertson, a contract dump, and a 1st get it done?

Revisionist history here but not signing Perry the year we signed Simmonds/Thornton was such an unbelievable miss.

That's definitely a whiff. There's a difference between a player who brings leadership and a player who's just old. Giordano is a better player than his contract, so it's just a plain good deal, but I'm not sure a 40 year old with 30 career play-off games is going to offer much in the way of teaching us how to win.

Comparing Giordano to Perry/Simmonds/Thornton level players is a whiff in itself.

Honestly not even really revisionist. Perry was coming off a pretty decent playoff run with Dallas and Simmonds looked just as done then as he does now.

Don’t even know if he’s available. By the sounds of it Scheifele is all but gone but I’m not sure if they are rebuilding or re-tooling.

If Hellebuyck became available that’s one of the few goalies I’d pony up for.

I'm not sure they have the roster to win now and they have a lot to turn over.

I don't think it will take that much for Helleybuck. He's still a good goaltender, but you've got 3 good years left in him.
