Would giroux be an option? I would normally say zero chance but.

He has made 78 million.
Clearly wants a chance at the cup. He left philly
Now there are persistent rumours he wants to be close to home which is a suburb of ottawa.

Why would he sign in ottawa. There is no chance for a cup there.

If he played in Toronto he family could be near home and have a chance

He clearly wouldn’t take the gio special. He is only 35 but 2 years here then goes to ottawa makes some sense?
Just curious. Isn’t Ottawa and his hometown 10 hours away from each other?

Matthews likes the bright lights and hanging out with guys like Justin Bieber. He is not going to go to Arizona to play in front of 5000 retirees. If you want to start worrying about him leaving (2 years prematurely) then you should worry a lot more about a team like the Rangers.

The security guard his own building didnt know who he was.

He would not be a star there

Yes but apparently he moved to ottawa at 14 and lives there in offseasons

Ah, Giroux - now here's a guy Brobust was talking about. Ontario kid but probably hates the Leafs. From his wiki:

Giroux was born on January 12, 1988 in Hearst, Ontario, a Francophone town, and is fluent in both English and French.[6] He is the son of Raymond and Nicole Giroux, and has one sister, named Isabelle.[7] Giroux and his family were supporters of the Montreal Canadiens, but his favorite hockey player growing up was Pavel Bure.[6]
Giroux is good buddies with Marner though.

My one lone concern is that Kopitar's $10 million contract ends the exact same time as Matthews does.

Even that is farfetched at this point.

My cousin saw him at a mall in Arizona 3 years ago and Matthews was in shock. Said he can go wherever he wants in AZ and no one will come up to him.

Legit zero chance he goes to AZ to play hockey where no one gives a flying F about him

Let’s get serious here,Ottawa has as much chance of winning the cup as the Leafs have.

I think he's going to get resigned by Tampa. The appeal of coming home is not there anymore unless you are 35+ year olds who has kids around in Toronto

Tampa is going to need to replace Perry and Maroon. Their money can easily go into Paul

Disagree completely. The Michael Bunting experiment shows anybody they can come here and potentially have the chance to build an offensive career year.

Some GM will give him a 4x5 deal

I don’t know about that. With all the talk of guys like Zacha, Strome and friends not getting their QO’s money might not be as free flowing in the stagnant cap. Guys like Marchment and Paul would be nice finishing pieces and a bit of a luxury for us, but many teams are trying to fill top 6 top 4 roles and I’m not sure they’re going to be throwing around cash.

I love Paul and he's really boosted his value with the heater he had at the end of the season with Tampa plus these playoffs .. some time will pay him well but we have seem big deals for these types of players before and they are very risky.

Probably too much for too long from a GM hoping to bottle that heater he went on earlier in the season while ignoring the entire rest of his body of work.
To be fair he was first in the league in WAR/60 and 2nd in xWAR/60 behind only Matthews. It's not like he was a bum outside of him putting up 23 points in 14 games. If he can duplicate his entire body of work this season he will absolutely be worth 5M/year.

For reference because I can already see the comparison - Clarkson was 206th in the league in WAR/60 in 2013.

You definitely don’t want to give him the Josh Anderson deal. Ideally you find these guys before they pop. Like in the Miles Wood, Alex Formenton level of career development. Downside is you don’t know if they have it. Also underscores the importance of drafting these big body power forwards who can give you a grinder floor. On draft day people really fall in love with brains and finesse skills but when you have those abilities in the core you need guys who can just go through a crowd.

I think the Leafs will be in on Marchment but will not be the one offering the big AAV deal with term.

My guess is that Dubas will be standing with a shorter term "prove last year wasn't a fluke" offer in case Marchment's camp isn't as keen on the bigger deals being thrown out there.
What might help the Leafs case is Keefe and Marchment are very familiar with one another. Keefe is a fan of Marchment, and the player likes the coach too. If Marchment is chasing money than it won't matter, but if not than it helps the Leafs chances

I think I’m on board the earlier proposals here talking about a trade centered around Muzzin and Varlamov. It gives us cap space, a starting goaltender, and gives Sandin the top 4 opportunity he’s earned.

I'd give him 3 x 4M AAV. I feel like it's fair but definitely a risk. Brings him to 30 years old, plenty of time to cash in if he does well.

He's often injured too and not exactly a big track record.

Miles Wood certainly has the potential to have a Josh Anderson-like breakout .. similar levels of production early in their career.

I would be very interested.

Kind of interesting. I notice Miles Wood, Mason Marchment and Nick Ritchie are all 1995 birthdays.
