IMO Hertl has to be the target, but I'm unsure if SJS would even trade him unless it's the right price. No idea what they'd even want.

Maybe 2022 1st, Daemon Hunt/Ryan O'Rourke, and Sturm? They need D prospects badly and we have a plethora of them that are shortly going to become expendable out of necessity. With the cap crunch years coming up I feel like we've gotta go for it this year and Hertl is that guy.

Kaprisov-Hartman-Zuccarello
Boldy-Hertl-Fiala
Greenway-Eriksson Ek-Foligno
Duhaime-Dewar-Bjugstad

I have no problem moving those assets, but not this season for a rental. There’s no way we resign him, and I don’t think we’re a Hertl away from a cup.

Given the condensed schedule and given the last few games, does anyone still think Minnesota can make a deep playoff run?

I think the same thing I thought while they were winning the games, I think they could make it to the 2nd round if they can play their game, but I'd be somewhat surprised if they advanced the the 3rd round, and shocked if they advanced to the Cup finals.

Don't we say that every year when we limp in? I'd like us to be a higher seed for once come playoff time.

It's all well and good to say "once you're in, anything can happen". The problem is when that's your plan and you build your strategy around it. I'm all for letting this team run as far as they can in the playoffs, but we shouldn't be buying expensive rentals on the basis of "once you're in, anything can happen".

We did that too and lost in the first round.

Didn't say we should. I was just responding to a rather open ended question.

Generally I don't form an opinion based on "a few games" anyway. Every team gets a slump in the season at some point. It's how long it lasts and how well you come out of it that matters.

I think it's reasonable to pay a 1st and a prospect not named Rossi/Lambos/Wallstedt/Addison for a rental.

If the playoffs started today, I would only favor Colorado against us in the West. Vegas, too, if they were completely healthy. But an injury to MacKinnon or Rantanen, another Kadri suspension, Vegas gets upset in the Pacific bracket, and you're looking at our best chance to get to the finals in a while.

A late 1st is very unlikely to help us in the next 3 years, so I think it's a worthwhile gamble to trade it if that package could fetch a rental that moves the needle.

I'm going to go out on a limb and put Calgary in that group as well.

As Talon says, anything goes in the playoffs.
91 North Stars- Stanley Cup Finals
03 Wild 6 seed Western Conference Finals
03 Ducks 7 seed Stanley Cup Finals
06 Oilers 8 seed Stanley Cup Finals
10 Flyers- Made playoffs last day of season and made Cup Finals

Didn't the Kings win the cup as an 8 seed?
