Well, Lou now has about 4M to sign Barzal AND Timashov.
He's either going to have to trade away one of their few good players to afford Barzal (Pulock, Bailey, Eberle) for virtually nothing (maybe even slight adds), or pay through the nose to get rid of a Ladd, Nelson, Pageau, Leddy contract. Or I guess he can maybe find a suitor for two of Komarov, Clutterbuck, or Cizikas. That or he's going to make Barzal sit, and I'm 100% here for the Islanders running him out of town. No matter what happens, I'm excited to watch Lou and the Islanders burn.

Barzal? Lou is going to focus on his real priorities, Martin and Greene. If there's some cash left over, he can worry about Barzal then.

Lou won GM of the year. If anyone can pull off signing Martin & Greene this close to the cap, it's him. I bet he trades a scrub like Barzal or Pulock to ensure he can do that.

Man I love when people are like "The Leafs cap situation is the worst in the league" and then I look at the Canucks and the Islanders and wonder how they haven't fired their incompetent GM's.

Boychuks $6mil will hit LTIR, so they aren’t as bad as people think.

Lou is a fantastic GM. I mean he won GM of the year. The guy trades away very good players for 2nd's just because it was worth keeping 4th liners over those players. He's also won playoff rounds. That alone shows how amazing he is
Can't wait for the WS talking him up like hesbhe next best thing lol

Toews wasn’t that good. He shouldn’t be a top-4 defenseman, but can survive in that role under the right circumstances. He is probably equivalent to Justin Holl. He wasn’t worth the 4+ million he got in Colorado.

Lou will get bailed out by his mistakes with Boychuk on LTR, but Lou could easily mess it up which is quite likely. He is just an awful negotiator.
I cannot wait to see the 3 and 4 year deals for Martin and Greene

Lou needs to wait until the season start before he can do that.
Ideally, someone OS Barzal 1 week before they are able to put Boychuk on LTR forcing them to move out salary.

Yeah for now, he is still in a huge mess. Either Barzal takes a huge discount, or Lou will need to trade another good player and/or attach a piece to get rid of a bad contract.

Can't they go 10% over the cap until the season starts?
How much do you think Barzal should make? If they go with a 20 man roster, that would give them 10.6 million in cap space.

They can go over 10% but have to be cap compliant on opening day before anyone is placed on LTIR.
If they match, they have 1 week to clear salary to be cap compliant on opening day. It has to be timed perfectly where the OS decision has to be made before a player can go on LTIR.
If done too early theyll have time to make decisions as they can utilize the 10% overage, but if done right before the start of the season they have to make the decision from a position of desperation.

The Islanders would never have fewer than 7 days to clear the cap space. Regardless of the timeframe, it would be a position of desperation.
Who's going to make that offer sheet? There are a handful of teams with enough cap space to make the offer. Some of those teams don't have all the required picks. Most of the teams with cap space are running on internal budgets.
They've never made sense, even before hockey revenues were cut in half during a global pandemic.

They can put players on LTIR opening day, but its not a smooth transition form the 10% overage.
10% over -> Cap compliant -> LTIR -> cap space
If an OS was signed now they would have the 10% cushion to accept and deal with the cap later. If its right before the season they have to be cap compliant so they would be limited in time to figure it out.
NJ, Det, LA have the cap and the money. Do they gamble the picks? Maybe. Barzal would be worth it as long as it comes under 8.7mil.

I was under the impression that you had to the end of the day to get it on the books, since the cap is calculated daily.
They have 7 days to even decide to match, so they would have that much time to clear space at least.
Barzal has to sign the offer. Would he want to go to a rebuilding team and miss the playoffs for the foreseeable future?
Ottawa, too, at least the cap space. Were I Dorion, I'd be lobbying hard to get EM to pony up the cash for a change. Barzal, Tkachuk, Stuetzle, Chabot, Brannstrom in the wings...plus a return on a possible trade involving one of Norris/Brown/Batherson...I could see the Sens moving up quickly if Murray returns to form.

He may think the Islanders are pretty much as good as they ever will be and decide to go somewhere which may need a couple of years to compete, but will be ready to go by his prime. The Islanders have one of the worst pools in the league and while they have a promising defense, their window is not exactly huge.

I wouldn’t chose to go to the islanders as a player, but if I was already there... I would not choose to leave for any of the teams with cap space either.
