Trade and Free Agency - 2025-26

The 180 the board has done over the years is kind of remarkable.

The issue is it makes it harder for teams to sign players and retain players.

The board was also drooling over Matthews recently. And then trying to trade random stuff for him and thinking it’s a good deal for TOR.

So the crazy meter was approaching the TOR or EDM levels on 10 years ago.

Undersized center moving towards his mid 30s. What could go wrong…
Btw, 1st+Stramel IS overpayment for him.
The reported Stramel + 1st for Trochek at the TDL was an unsigned Stramel. Now that he is signed, NYR have zero risk, making him more valuable(though on the flip side, he did break his foot), while Trochel has lost value, theoretically, because h can no longer help a team in the the 2026 playoffs.

Bottom line is that Stramel and a 1st is a nice offer for Trochek.

That is a big maybe. If we can land larkin or whoever, are we really going to worry about the college free agents who don't do anything 99 out of 100 times? There is no point in worrying about the future right now, we are all in right now. If we have to blow it up in 5 or 10 years and get new management nobody is going to care because we traded one of our draft picks.

You know that agents not only represent college players?

I think I take my chances on miffing the future pending college UFAs if I'm getting an NHL 1C.

I'm pretty sure both the college players and their agents understand that this is a business and these things happen. Not 100% positive, of course, but at least 50% sure.

Plus, the trade would send him to Michigan if he's involved, and I needn't tell everyone where Stramel has chosen to spend most of the last 6 years of his life.

By the way, Vegas, as an organization, has shown very little loyalty to players over the years if they no longer serve Vegas. Yet, players still want to go there.

In short, NHL players give approximately 0 f***s if Guerin trades a prospect to make the NHL team better.

You know college agents represent other clients outside of college as well right?

You are way overplaying the point you are trying to make. A college FA is going to go where he has a pathway to playing. Joe Blow 3 years from now isn’t going to avoid the Wild because his agent reminds him that we traded Stramel in a deal for Dylan Larkin. Lmfao

Honestly I feel like Anaheim and Columbus would be the best fits for Larkin.

No but an agent would push for a NTC or NMC or a higher salary for security.

Bingo. End of conversation.

Players aren't eligible for NTC until their UFA years. See: Brock Faber

My issue is we waited all this time for Stramel to develop, he finally broke out in college, looks to be a solid center in all facets of the game, and now we are going to trade him for a soon to be 33 year old center? That seems like horrible asset management. Finding a younger trade target or seeing what Stramel can do are much better options IMO.

Good luck signing a pending college FA again.

Stramel gained nothing by signing instead of waiting until he was a FA. The college kids probably won't remember it happened, but their agents will. That's a bad for business move.
Slightly, and only temporarily. That's the kind of move a team like the Golden Knights would make, and it works because if your team is good, good players want to play for it. I'm not entirely unsympathetic to the emotional elements of it, but winning smooths over a lot of such problems.

The issue is it makes it harder for teams to sign players and retain players.
Being a bad to mediocre team is a hell of a lot bigger anchor to signing and retaining players than signing a guy and then trading him when your situation changes,.

With Jojo going home, and it still being up in the air on Tarasenko/Zuccarello, what’s everyone’s interest level on possible FA wingers…

Bjorkstrand
Mikheyev
Marchment
Kuzmenko
Arvidsson
Tolvanen
Mantha
Milano
Fabbri
Olofsson
Kravtsov (Lol)

Who plays that other wing spot with Ek/Boldy? Mantha, Marchment, and Mikheyev probably get over paid. Maybe Advidsson gets too much money too. Who’s the next Jojo that we can get a lot of production from for little money?

Kaprizov Larkin Zuccarello
——— Ek Boldy
Trenin Hartman Brink
Foligno Sturm Foligno

Haight
Stramel?

Wouldn’t mind seeing something like this going into next year with someone like Arvidsson on line 2

Does Brink bump up and we slot Haight in there on the 3rd…

I like Marchment, he's a shit disturber and he can score
I like Mantha as well

Rest of em don't really do much for me one way or the other

But we gotta make sure we have the cap space for Hughes, Larkin, a FA, and a trade

Kaprizov-Larkin-DeBrusk
Marchment-Ek-Boldy
Brink-Hartman-Zuccarello
Foligno-Stramel/Haight-Trenin

Friedman on today’s 32 Thoughts and Russo on Barreiro both mentioned that McCarron being re-signed.
