Trade and Free Agency - 2025-26

How we ranking those in terms of who you want most? I think I’d go:

Thomas, Larkin, Hischier, and then pretty far down the line Barzal.
Barzal on the team would still be legit. That OT or 4 on 4 lineup would be skating around teams. Can you imagine Hughes and Barzal on the ice together?

I can see Hunt and Viking making the team. Hartman and/or Trenin would also have to go because of salary reasons, while Haight would make the team as a RHS who can play C. Zucc, Mojo, N. Foligno, Bogo, and maybe even Tarasenko would all be possibilities to come back, depending on their cap $.

I don't see that we can get Larkin and Trochek for Yurov, Stramel, and some picks, though. Drury was rumored to have turned down a deal for Stramel and a 1st last year.
I thought of that, but it would be rubbing Yzerman's face into the fact that he picked Cossa over Wallstedt during their draft year. Not gonna happen. Yzerman's seat is hot enough as is.
Agreed that we definitely don’t have the current assets to get both of them. You’re probably right about them being hesitant to take back Wallstedt too. I could see a 3-team trade being involved in one of the trades where we include Wallstedt though.

I would still prefer to try to find a way to keep Wallstedt & move Gus if he’s got any positive value. The additional cap for next season would be a big benefit. In all likelihood though, his injury and NMC probably make him impossible to move for positive value.

Actually not a terrible foundation for a deal if you believe Yurov and Stramel can replace most of what Ek brings. Ek and Larkin are basically the same age, both on nice contracts, but Larkin has more time left on his. Using Ek would greatly reduce the number of assets we'd have to send out, which would be better for depth in the long run.
I dont see the wings having interest in bringing in JEE as a major part of a Larkin deal. If hes moved it will be to get younger around the ages of Raymond, Seider and Edvinsson. Even if Ek were involved, I dont see a planet where Stramel wasnt as well

I do wonder if Guerin has any hesitancy to trade a guy that could’ve chosen his destination as a NCAA UFA.

The biggest issue is if Detroit is thinking of competing or not. Losing Larkin and not replacing him would be bad. I'd think it could be a bigger trade like Ekker + Hartman + Brodin for Larkin and another player. Ekker replaces Larkin for Detroit. Brodin helps their defense as they need a good left defenseman and Hartman gives them a good player they can flip at the deadline. Minnesota clears cap space, gets a different type of top 6 center and keeps Hughes happy and whoever the other player is provides depth.

That makes us a worse team. I just don't see anyway that makes sense

If they get back Yurov and Stramel, they get roughly $7M they can spend in UFA.

I’d prefer keeping all 3 of those guys listed. Give them Middleton if they want a LHD, he’s probably someone that isn’t considered a pure cap dump in this increasing cap market.

If they could find a way to get both Trocheck and Larkin, that would be amazing for the center depth if they find a way to keep Ek too.

I assume that’d cost both of Stramel and Yurov, but it gives them a 3 year window where you’re paying your top 3 Cs less than $20M. Hopefully either NYR or Detroit considers Middleton to have positive value and they can dump him.

$6.3M in cap space with roster below, so they’d need to find a way to either move Gus or Foligno + Trenin. Think you’d probably want to bring back MoJo and Zucc for cheap in this scenario.

Kap - Larkin - X
X - Trocheck - Boldy
X - Ek - Hartman
Foligno - Sturm - Trenin

Hughes - Faber
Brodin - Spurgeon
X - X

Wall
Gus

No room for Trocheck after McCarron gets 5x5, a full NTC, and 10% ownership in the team.

And yet no top 6 center in that bunch

The more about it I think a swap of Ek for Larkin might be the best for both teams

They think their GM is going to pony up to get Larkin to hopefully attract Hughes, when he didn't pony up to just get Hughes?
What’s funnier is them thinking Larkin would request a trade from the dumpster fire in Detroit only to join the dumpster fire in NJ

Well Guerin is building his own little team USA and signing Larkin absolutely makes Quinn happy
I think you can do both those things without giving up Brodin ek and Hartman. That doesn't help this team. A yurov, 27 1st, b prospect and Hartman to a 3rd team which nets detroit another 1st can get this done with Larkin having a NMC

Would you trade Ek for Yurov, 2 1sts and a B prospect?

Would you trade Koivu for that package?
