I watch it to see future possible NHL players my Red Wings already drafted.
In the US it sadly doesn't get much notice because it's college football bowl season.
TSN has the best coverage of this tourney imo and good to see NHL Network broadcasts games otherwise nobody in the USA would see these games.

I think that's pretty much how it goes: you have to win to draw interest and get coverage. With the US, Sweden, Russia and Finland all having won since 2010 you would expect interest to be higher in those countries. Of course Canada having won five straight immediately before that we all expect they're always going to win the next one and interest remains high here. I hardly expect countries that bow out early to get much coverage at home!

In Finland the lack of interest has been "helped" by the tournament being hidden behind pay tv. Last year's final was put on free tv at the last minute and a lot of the people didn't even know it was on because it was on a channel that doesn't usually air sports. The rights are up for grabs again since the current rights holder dropped them and most Finnish hockey fans are hoping they'd be on the national broadcasting company YLE again. Worst case scenario is they go to Viasat like in Sweden...

I hope when seeing the thousands of Canadians invading Helsinki next year helps the interest. It's going to be quite a party next Christmas in Helsinki, the home of santa clause apparently which is what everyone here is talking about lol.

No channel currently owns the broadcasting rights for the next year's WJC, if Yle (the national public-broadcasting company) picks the games I'd imagine the interest to multiply.

Viasat have been broadcasting the **** out of this tournament. I truly hate advertising but I can put a blind eye to that as long as Viasat keep taking the WJC's as serious as they have been this year. This is not a worst-case scenario, this is a making WJC's a top billing, first row sporting event.

Yep, Viasat have been absolutely amazing this year. It seemed like they broadcasted WJC for like 8 hours straight yesterday, :handclap:

Canada won five straight gold medals from 1993 through 1997, and it won another five in a row from 2005 through 2009.

That's a huge reason for the popularity here.

But also...TSN does a good job of syncing the WJC coverage with its NHL draft coverage, and talking about the World Junior's year round (Summer camp, evaluation camps, preview shows and roster predictions, etc).

You combine that with good hockey in a hockey-loving nation, you have a recipe for success.

Even with YLE televising, the key point will be how good our team is projected to be. If the public doesn't expect success, they might not tune in. The average Finnish sports fans is notoriously gloryhunter/bandwagon slanted these days.

In Finland, YLE>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Viasat because YLE is free.

Don't think that's much different in any country, except for one or two events that are always popular.

Pricing. Quebecers haven't lost their senses and won't pay outrageous ticket prices. If the tickets were reasonably priced the arena would be full.

Ticket prices for the quarterfinal are $83 to $278 Canadian.

For the Canada-USA game, they were $78 to $343.

I am not paying that much for Junior Hockey.

No wonder there are 3,000 empty seats. They still sold over 18,000 tickets, which is impressive, but they cannot be surprised after Christmas to not have sellouts when everyone just spent a lot of cash.

Here in Vancouver, if I want to watch a WHL game, there are two ticket prices:

GOLD: $24

RED: $19.50

Can't see how the WJC is THAT much better in terms of pricing. I am not paying $278 to watch the Czechs play the Slovaks. Sorry.

I don't think that would be the worst case scenario, cause many hockey fans have Viasat already because they show NHL and KHL in Finland.

Not even close to what for example MTV3 had. Last year's final had 900K viewers combined, about 200K were on pay channel (probably because they din't know it was on Sub as well. Note that Finland has the worst ratio of pay tv subscribers in the Nordic countries with about 30% of the population having one. In Sweden and Norway the number is 40-60%. YLE would be infinitely better for the tournament than Viasat. Keeping it on pay tv would only make sure it remains only for the hardcore fans.

Indeed, Viasat have been amazing. I'm already sick and tired of Chris and Renberg over at SVT.

I really don't get the Renberg hate. Chris Härenstam is by far Sweden's best play-by-play commentator, be it in hockey, soccer or bandy. The Viasat production is top-notch, but the commentators are some way below SVT (Lückner, Nils Holmgren, Håkan Södergren...), with a few exceptions (Granqvist, Norström).

If any of the two companies get Lidström or Sundin in the studio, it is instant winning.

To create public interest in the tournament, Yle is superior to any other channel.

Depends on how the production will be executed. If the provider will half-ass it as bad as MTV over the past five or so years it would definitely not be the best way to create public interest in the tournament.

How come Finland is not paying for extra channels to the same extent as Swe/Nor? I mean, in this day and age you can even get it streamed in the computer (onto the TV with Chromecast or similar), so you don't have to setup a dish or anything. I would think Finland to be similar to Sweden in this regard.

Isn't Granqvist contracted by cmore? Otherwise he's easily the best play-by-play guy we have. I love Härenstam during the JWHC's because he's the Nr. #1 reason for this tournament getting popular in Sweden, but Lasse is definitely better on TV even though he's a soccer guy. Härenstam+Wikegård though, that's the best commentator-duo in history. I've never seen Lidström and Sundin as color commentators, has this happened before?

YLE production has always been the best in Finland. They are far above anyone else in Finland. World Championship and Olympics they had the best studios.
