Nah, the entire organizational mindset, when it comes to developing young players, changed in 04 and has continued. We might not have done a tank and rebuild style of team development, but we definitely did a competitive rebuild.

Ok, if drafting smarter and bringing in (for the most part) complementary players is considered a 'rebuild' then I agree. We obviously just have a difference if opinion in we hat a rebuild is

There's whispers that Don Lucia could get canned. He coaches the Gophers, won back to back National Championships in 2001-2002, 2002-2003. If you're unfamiliar with NCAA hockey, Lucia plays an offensive system that still values defense. He also knows how to run a PP, the Gophers had the best PP in the country. I assume most of you know about Minnesota's early exit this year.

We missed the playoffs in Tortorella's first full season as Rangers coach. We had a 12-7 record with him and squeaked into the playoffs over Florida in his very short season. Tortorella began to have success in 2010-11 with a very, very different team.

Improvement! A minor upswing, that also could be placebo effect.

Wasn't that similar. More than half of the goals scored after Torts took over were scored or assisted by Antropov, Avery or Morris--players Renney didn't have.

Similar enough in the fact that it wasn't a star laden team and some of our better players weren't as far along in development.

There are hardly any players here that were here when Renney was fired...

Would be a pointless, directionless move.

Who did those guys in Pittsburgh play with? Even with injuries that team has robust talent.

Then use the bruins, or the blues, or the habs.

All teams built with depth, not on superstar talents.

Or if you want to compare to the hawks or pens, look at the drop off in talent after their first line, there is very little.

Teams in the playoffs can take away a line, or a guy without it being a huge issue, thats why the rangers have beaten the caps.

Its the depth that kills teams.

Rangers have never had that, and thats not how sather builds either, as soon as the rangers find a couple 20 goal guys, he tries to turn them into one 40 goal guy.

IMO, I would much rather have 3 lines of 20 goal scorers, than 1 line of 40 goal guys and a bunch of bums.

College coaches. Hmm.

What about Mike Eaves?

Alain Vigneault seems like he would be a good candidate. Very impressive seasons with the Canucks.

I can't say I know enough about his systems, personality, etc.

why wouldn't he be good here?

Definitely don't want Ruff

How many playoff games did Vigneault win after losing in the Stanley Cup Final?

Which I acknowledged. We thought we had it this year, who knew Richards would flounder and Kreider wasn't ready for at least a consistent role. Who thought we would end up with such an abysmal PP.

speculation?

points to Hank and Nash maybe. Hank seemed to verbally notion that Torts' shelf life was done. Nash = coach killer? Hitchcock, one of best coaches in league got fired during his tenure in CBJ.

The Blue Jackets were a moribund franchise that had quickly fiddled away the honeymoon period of their existence in Columbus. Hitchcock, in large part because of his ability to articulate the game, soon became the face of the franchise, even bigger than star player Rick Nash.

He coached his brains out and the Blue Jackets went 28-29-5 through the balance of the 2006-07 season. The team was 34-36-12 in his first full season in Columbus before breaking through last season as he guided the Jackets to the playoffs for the first time. The Blue Jackets swooned down the stretch in 2008-09, winning just twice in their last eight games and were swept in the first round by second-seeded Detroit.

But the buzz returned to Columbus with the expectation that this team was ready to step forward again this season, following the trends of other young teams like Pittsburgh and Washington.

Hitchcock, always tough on his players and especially tough on his top players, was credited with helping franchise forward Nash develop into a complete hockey player. If it's true Nash chafed under Hitchcock's tutelage, it wouldn't be the first star player to be at odds with a coach with a big personality. If it's true, it will now be up to Nash to show he is a leader and not a coach killer.

3 yrs leader, requests trade and is moved to the New York Rangers.

Firing Hitchcock was one of the biggest blunders in that franchise's history.

After what Franseca said, I assume that Sather told Torts he was going to have to adjust his system, open it up a bit, and Torts said no so Sather fired him. Right?

While trying to piece together Torts dream team, I don't like the idea of building your team around your coach.

Agreed with that.

I was just telling someone that part of the reason I'm fine with Tortorella being gone is that we're about to enter another little period where the team requires infusions of youth, as all teams go through in the Cap era, even and especially the best ones. Tortorella just simply isn't open-minded enough about how players play to deal with it. Zuccarello's comments on his mindset coming back to the team said it best. He wasn't going to worry about anything other than playing the game the best way he knows how. Do we really want a coach who garners that kind of response handling an infusion of younger players?

Colorado looking for a new coach, Torts should do a great job there, cooling off a little...

I had to re-check HFboards again to see if he was really fired. Still utterly floored that he was fired.

Still want to know why Sather now gets to hire ANOTHER coach when he should be out the door as well.
